Running during Ramadan

Hi everyone,

As a Muslim, I am planning to fast the month of Ramadan. This means that I won't be eating food or drink anything from sunrise to sunset for a whole month. However, I am also currently trying to complete a 10k training plan.

The only option I have is to run after work which is any time between 16:00 and 17:00. I would break my fast at around 20:00.

I was thinking to run around 19:00 which would then mean that I would come back and break my fast and replenish myself.

Can anyone provide any tips or share their experience with this as I really don't want to pause the plan.

Thank you. 😊

For 10km or about an hour's session, keeping generally hydrated in the hours that you are allowed is the important thing. The article also contains other useful tips.

Hi Mwuahaha , although I have no experience of this either, that article looks really useful. May I also wish you Ramadan Kareem. 😊

Hi Cmoi, Thank you very much. 😊

I have absolutely no experience, I tend to feel faint if I don't eat anything for 3 hours in a row. So I can only say I have a huge 'admiration' for people who can fast for that many hours. You say you don't drink anything then either, does that mean you can't drink water either? I certainly wouldn't be able to, so really a huge g'luck to you!

As for the running, I think it's different for each person. A few years back I ran on an empty stomach 1 time when getting up and taking breakfast after my run. But I honestly don't think I would be able to do that now anymore. So it all depends on yourself. Whether it would be best to run early (after your last meal before fasting) with the risk of feeling faint the rest of the day. Or run late (before your first meal after fasting) with the risk of your run being difficult because you feel faint of fasting. I personally would keep to short runs and postpone the long runs to avoid exhausting the body too much.

So I plainly have absolutely no good advice. All I want to say it good wishes with the Ramadan and I do am curious how you will experience the running during fasting. What works best for you for the time to run and how your body will experience it.

Cheers!

Hi, Thank you for your reply. I guess it is all about trial and error really. I'm planning on going for a run at around 7pm which will give me just under an hour before I have to break my fast. I will see how it goes before I plan my next run.

Yes, I haven't had any food or drink since 4am so I will most certainly have to take it easy.

Thank you once again.

Hi, ramadan mubarak to you.Finding the right time to run while fasting is quite difficult.

Running one hour before sunset would mean running when you feel the most tired and weak, but this has to be tried.

Having just completed C25k, i was thinking of running in the morning after the school run when i feel fresh but question is will I be alright until the end of the day?

I don’t want to give up my new fitness habit so I think we should have to plan according to how we are feeling on the day.

I am planning on leaving two days rest between runs to start with and see how it goes.

Good luck to you

I fast for health /weight control twice a week and on those days so do my run in the morning because I find I have good energy levels whereas I tend to flag a bit later in the day. If this isn’t an option for you my one piece of advice would be to drink drink drink water water water throughout the day. My drop in energy is normally due in part to dehydration. Good luck

Sorry I just realised you cannot drink either so my advice about dehydration doesn’t help!
