I haven’t run since pulling up with hip pain at roughly the half-way point of my HU Virtual Spring 10k 9 days ago.
After 2 days of hobbling round the house and application of ice, things settled down a bit. It now feels a bit like the ITB trouble and bursitis I had following a car accident years ago, but I just wonder why that would come back out of the blue, with no prior niggles. 🤷♀️
So I’ve been going for gentle walks to keep things moving. 🚶♀️All good so far, so I had the crazy idea that I’d try going for a gentle run/walk this afternoon to see how things were. I quickly changed my mind when Mr B, with his two gammy knees, left me for dead at the edge of the woods towards the end of our gentle 4k stroll yesterday.
So another walk it was instead. I couldn't help thinking it was good running weather - cool but not too cold and a very light drizzle on and off to prevent overheating without making you wet.
A year ago I never, ever would have thought that not being able to run would make me feel so frustrated. The only thing that may preserve my sanity is the local pool is opening again on Monday and I have a couple of lane swimming sessions booked in for next week 🏊♀
I do have a physio appointment booked for next Tuesday evening. Not a runner, but a qualified Sports Therapist who has worked with the ladies team of a Premiership football club, at London Marathon as well as in the NHS, so should know their stuff.
It’s my one year anniversary coming up of belonging to this wonderful, amazing and supportive community of VRBs and it looks like I’ll be spending it where it began - on the IC.
Hey ho!
I had to include this photo I took on my walk today as it looked just like they were all lined up on the starting line and ready to go when the starting pistol fired! 😁

So sorry to hear this Birdlady64 I know that frustration of not being able to run. Like you I'd never have believed that it could feel so bad not being able to run.But it's good that you've got a physio appointment lined up already. I know you'll come back stronger 💪
Love the photo they certainly look like they're waiting for someone to shout "charge" 😊
That’s really sad that you still can’t run, swimming will be lovely and may help, good luck with the sports physio i’m sure they will help get you back out there Love the photo made me smile
Thanks SolaThe sheep made me laugh - they looked so funny.
I'm looking forward to swimming again. I stopped going for a while before Christmas as a precaution as I thought we would be spending it with my parents so it has been a while
I miss swimming but may have to wait til the sea warms up a bit, i’m not keen on our local pool and it will be booked solid fir ages, there is a beautiful heated outdoor pool but that’s booked up too Enjoy your swimming and get that hip sorted soon
Ooh swimming in the sea - that's brave. I enjoyed it in the Maldives, but not sure about the North Sea🤔I wish there was a nice outdoor pool near me - you wouldn't be able to keep me away!
I went in the north sea once, never again, i don’t think i’ve ever felt such cold water, the channel is warmer, the Maldives sounds amazing, i’ve swam off South Africa and the Caribbean both really warm sea
South Africa depends if you are Indian or Atlantic Ocean side.I used to spend virtually every school holiday in East Anglia and you couldn't keep me out of the sea back then. I'm obviously much less hardy these days 😁
Sorry about your recent injuries Birdlady64, when you have been running for a while you do miss it if you are on the IC, I like that photograph of the sheep, just hope that you can get back to running soon, well done on that little run/walk you had today.
I sooooooo sympathise as I am on flipping IC. But I am doing Nordic Pole walking on advice of physio to mobilise back and relieve pressure on joints. Hopefully everything will strengthen up!
It must be so frustrating for you, but it seems to be better than it was and you do have that physio appointment. Surely swimming will help, but in any case, you like to swim so it will hopefully make you less cranky! 😉
Sorry you're still not able to run BL64. I'm venturing off the IC tomorrow. I haven't run for 3 weeks now, so we'll see what happens... Your physio definitely sounds like an expert! I hope you can get back to it soon.
Love the picture! Sorry you are not running at the moment... I'm not really either but am working on my hip strength to get me back with no niggles!! Glad you have physio!
Good idea to get advice. I asked on the Alzheimers society running advice group and guess what ....they gave me a link to exercises including clams!! Who knows! I'll stick to what feels ok!
I feel for you Diane, and know how frustrating it must feel, i guess the best cure will be rest! I barely ran in feb/march, but feel better for the rest!
I'm sure you'll back, and probably stronger, for having an enforced break, but i know how hard it feels, us runners are not the most patient of people!!! 🤣
Aww - thanks so much Rebecca. We're all in need of a big hug right now now, aren't we? Sending you one back 🤗
Oh yes - hairdressers 😁 I have mine booked in for Monday19th. I have a lady who comes to the house - she's been doing my hair for absolutely ages.
I keep missing your posts - I thought I was following you, but turns out I wasn't. Looks like you are absolutely smashing week 6. Well done! You are such an inspiration!
Aww. BL, I do feel sad for you. Just as the weather is improving too, but with any luck you’ll get some good advice and exercises from the physio and you’ll soon be on the mend. 🤞
Hi Birdlady, waving from the IC to you, I hope you get some good advice from the physio and are soon able to pick up the running again, as it's such a great help in these strange times we are living through. I hope that you come back stronger and enjoy a swim or two in the meantime 🤗😁
Thanks Little. I can certainly empathise with you on the walking home with a b it of a limp front. Hopefully I stopped running before I did too much damage, but will wait to see what the physio says.I hope you are on the mend and will able to run again soon. You are right - running has definitely kept me sane over this last year, but the walks and a few swims will help
Take care and do whatever the physio recommends to get you back out running 😁 hopefully, as you say, you've caught a problem early? Good luck with the physio 🤞🤞🤞
Sympathies. I know that feeling too well - it's very real! But once you have had that physio appointment you can start to move forward. You should get an exercise plan focused on recovery and will feel you are doing something positive again. Once you're back out there, this really will feel like a tiny blip but in the meantime keep doing whatever else you can to maintain your fitness. Enjoy the swimming 😊
Thanks for the positive comments linda. Of course all that makes total sense. I'm feeling a lot less maudlin and sorry for myself today after yesterdays somewhat needy rant.
I'm looking forward to my swim tomorrow - just need to remember where I hid my kit away last December 😁
Thanks!Like you said - no point going to the GP. They'll just tell me to take painkillers/rest. And I'm not sure I'd have the courage to have a bit of a rant 😁😉
Hope things are still moving in the right direction for you
Had a little setback as I’ve been poorly and been in bed quite a bit so it’s aggravated my sciatic nerve. Felt much better today though and was relieved to manage a walk so that has helped take some pain away.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and physio is definitely right course of action.
Sorry to hear you're still suffering. I'm sure the physio will be able to shed some light and suggest a recovery strategy. You're obviously missing running a lot if the first thing you think when you see sheep is that they're lining up at the starting line 🤣🤣. Hope you're back in your running shoes soon.
Thanks Lifluf. Those sheep really did look like they were ready for the off!
I'm feeling more upbeat today, despite the hip being a bit more niggly today. Maybe I overdid the walking a bit, but I have my swim tomorrow to look forward too. Just need to find where I hid my swimming kit last year 😁
They are so cute and they looked so funny all lined up like that I just had to take a snap.
I'm also feeling more upbeat today - especially after the encouragement and support from everyone on here. Hope the sun is shining for you down on the south coast today. Enjoy the rest of the weekend
It was nice for our lakeside run this morning. Then It has been a mixture of sunshine and sleet but what do you expect when we decide to bring the garden table out of the garage ready for a bit of hospitality?
I can totally understand your frustration at not been able to run, I am in a similar position 😕 It will two weeks tomorrow since I've last run, first I had the cold from hell which then turned into sinusitis. Everyday I think maybe I get out there for a short run today but the reality is I still don't feel up to it yet . . . lets hope we are both back out there again very soon.
Hi BL, it may just be your increasing distance that's caused the problem. I'd never had issues with my hips before but had ITB probs and mild bursitis in my left hip during the build up from 5 to 10k.With a break, then maybe 2 gentle runs a week and all the stretches I could find to ease things off it eventually sorted itself out. But was my area of concern for a few months.
I still do stretches for my hips in with the general ones (dynamic before and static after) just to be sure it doesn't return.
I found in the 1st year or so of running I was googling and adding in new strengthening exercises every other week for one area of my body or another!
Hopefully your hip is the same issue and something you can work on and get through...very sensible move seeing the physio though after your previous injury, good luck 👍
Yes - its possible. I was clocking up more weekly kms last Autumn though, without any issues.
I'm glad you managed to successfully work through the issues with your hip. I'm going to wait and see what the physio says before doing any particular stretches though as I don't want to make anything worse.
I definitely understand your frustration. Fingers crossed the physios will get you back out enjoying your runs. It sounds like you will be good hands 👍
I totally sympathise with you, since my hip is being a pain in the thruppenies as well just now (although it's actually my knee that's sore, I know the hip is the source of the trouble). I had a lovely 6k run on Monday, then went out on Friday and had an absolute nightmare. Normally I'd have a longer run today, but I'm just not keen. I'm going to make a point of resting today with all the painkillers in the hope that things will improve soon. I'm fearing right now that I may never run 10k again, and I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone. It's very frustrating I know, but hang in there & good luck with the physio.
Oh dear - that doesn't sound good. I saw your post that says you need a hip replacement - well let's hope you don't have to wait as long as you think for that. I'm sure you'll be fine after you have had it done - and until then just do what you can, when you feel like it. Don't beat yourself up over it - you don't necessarily have to run 10k to enjoy your runs. Good luck!
I know, you're right of course. I'm going to ease off for a bit & hopefully will be fit for the 2 virtual 10ks I've signed up for at the end of May. No more after that I think until I get "fixed" - can't wait!
That’s pants Birdlady64 ...but patience is a virtue...she says, knowing she’d be the same!!! And whoever’s mouth those words came out of can’t have been a runner!!! Sounds like you’re going to see the right person so fingers crossed she’ll give you a programme that will soon get you back up and running 😉 x
