Really needing to get back to running!

You know how at sometimes things all fall into place and at others it feels as if the world is conspiring against you? Well the latter. Last time I posted from the ic I was having real trouble with my knee. Had a fortnight off and did some knee exercises and tentatively returned to just a fifteen minute run a couple of weeks ago. Managed another 15 minutes a few days later and then went off to Pembrokeshire with the family where I didn’t run but did lots of walking. So we came home on Monday and I had decided to go back to three gentle runs a week with the aim of rejoining the magic plan in a couple of weeks.

On Monday night I woke several times with a sore throat and bad head and a general feeling of being not right. Since then I’ve had a chest infection with a horrible cough and have spent loads of time in bed. I’m now at the stage of screaming with boredom while still coughing away and without the energy to do anything to distract myself. It feels as if all my very hard won fitness is just draining away. I’m weak as a kitten and bored out of my brain. I’ve signed up for my first ever 10k in early March. I was already pretty daunted by that being the slowest person in the world and not having ever run 10k. Now it just feels totally out of reach.

My lovely husband has been looking after me, bringing me cups of tea and putting up with how fed up I am. He doesn’t really get how much I mind about my running falling to pieces though so please forgive me for having a groan about it on here! Anybody else managed to come back after five or six weeks of injury and illness? How did you find it?

Sorry for the rant but just needed to have a bit of a wail!

No need to be sorry Gwenoldy. You had a plan to run 3 times a week and now you're I'll, it's not your fault.

Get better first then gradually get back to running . I'm sure you'll do your 10k no problem. Get well soon and good luck 🤗

Ah thanks buddy! Think I was letting it all get to me this morning. Today I haven’t had any daytime sleep so I reckon I must be improving. I’ll just have to see how it goes. There will be other 10ks I suppose if I can’t get there. But I’ll give it a good go!

Just concentrate on getting better - the runs will be there when you're ready.😀

Thanks JonathanP. You are right of course. I spent such a very long time building up to both doing 10k and doing an event, and even to thinking of myself as a runner because I’m still very slow, that it derailed me a bit to think I might not do it. But if I don’t do this one there will be others. The important thing is to go back to it when I’m ready!

The longest I had off was some years ago with stress fracture in my foot, that was 3+ months off as I recall, and yes it does set you back but its not like starting from the beginning again. This past week I only manged two short runs due to a bad cold, if I'd have been sensible I probably wouldn't have run, so I'm taking it easy this weekend and hopefully I will be back out there next week, the running will be there when you are fit again as my partner tells me, and she is right :)

That’s reassuring, thank you. I’ve always had this sense that doing c25k in the first place was so hard that if I lost the running habit I might not be able to bring myself to do it again! But if you had to have three months off and didn’t need to go right back to the beginning that’s encouraging! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience!
