Bootiful day for a run 😄

I even managed to slightly sunburn my face!!!

Ive returned to Bridge to 10k podcast again to try to get past my having to walk so frequently. And today was Week2 run1. Last week I was running for 4 lots of 10 mins with 1 min walks - this week it is 3 lots of 15 mins with 1 min walks between.

I wasn’t too sure how I felt about this as I have struggled to keep running lately but I thought I’d just slow it down a bit and see how I went. So I did my warm up walk and then off I went. It was quite nice reliving the old soundtrack and they felt like familiar friends and I found that 10 minutes had gone by without me noticing. The voice prompts kept me going too “ you have run for 10 mins now” “ 5 mins left” “ 2 mins left” “ 1 min left” and “walk!!”.

So that was ok....I had detoured slightly from my usual route as there are lots of railings up for the Covid Testing Centre where I usually join the river trail, and I have to negotiate clambering over a low wall now or over a rail, so I went lower down the town and then cut across and joined it about half a mile further in. It was really warm and sunny and I was glad I had dispensed with a jacket and also grabbed my sunnies before I left home.

I had procrastinated quite a lot before running as I had had a bad nights sleep and thought I would feel better after eating something so I waited for my breakfast to go down before leaving the house. Consequently, and also due to the weather, the trail beside the river was packed with walkers, dog walkers, parents with small kids on bikes, adults in bikes as well as loads of other runners. Quite handy though as I had to keep my wits about me to weave in and out and also dodge racing bikes coming up behind me at great speed. It seems to be the thing now when you are riding a bike to not use a bell. You just shout “ on your right” and expect everyone else to hurl themselves into a bush so that you can pass. Bl***y annoys me!! Just get a sodding bell!!!

Anyway 2nd 15 mins flew past and I was really enjoying myself. SOOOO glad I hadn’t worn a jacket though as it was really warm now!! On that 2nd walk I glanced at my watch and saw I’d gone past 3k and , as I’ve not managed to get past 5k this year, I thought I’d see if I could make it to 6k. I had turned around at this point and was heading back again, squinting into the sun as my sunnies kept steaming up, and wishing I could find my “CatCrap” for my glasses. I might have to give in and buy some more!!

And then I was running again!! Strangely this run I seemed to have settled more into my stride and debated carrying straight in at the end of that 3rd 15 mins but as It turned out I had to cross a road so I walked up and down until the cars cleared allowing me to cross and then a minute later ran the last 6 minutes. 54 mins total (3 mins walking in that) and 6k completed.

I walked home with a happy smiley glow ( and sunburnt cheeks which are still very pink even now 6 hours later). Then after my shower I sat down to look at my stats and both Strava and Garmin had decided I’d been for a WALK!!! Cheeky sods!!! I wasn’t THAT slow!! 9:09 min/km or 14:27 min/mile. Ive run slower than that before !!! I was flabbergasted!!

I hastened to change that to a Run but it did take the glow off me a bit.

9.09 min/km isn't all that slow, pity that Strava and Garmin put you down for a walk, not a run, naughty of them, I suppose they think 9 min/km is walking pace,

I am doing Irish John's Cape Of Good Hope Challenge so today I decided to walk 21 Kilometres to add my kilometers to that challenge, for the most part it was a walk but I did run a little as well, I set up MapmyWALK, at the end of that just over 21K Mapmywalk told me that I had walked 21.31 kilometers at a pace of 09.19km/min in a time of 3 hours, 18 minutes and 29 seconds, remember that was mainly a walk with no more than 2 minutes runs with about 6 or 7 minutes of walking between, perhaps in the future I will be able to run a HM in around 2h 45 minutes, but first I'll run another 10 miles before I think of running a HM.

That was 7 seconds slower than my HM I RAN in August 2019 🤣🤣. See I AM slow!!

I have just looked at the results of the 2019 Brighton Half Marathon, there were 34 runners slower than your time or my mainly walk HM this morning, I walked today about 80%, run around 20%, if it had been the other way around 80% run, 20% walk, even if it had been the same time as this morning I would have posted on the Marathon forum that I had ran my first HM, perhaps in the future I may run with a few walking breaks my first HM.

Back when I ran that HM I always used to feel I was cheating if I walked so I DID run all the way but it was the hottest day of the year and middle of the day ( silly me I know!) . I have wanted to do another one but it was shortly after that that my hip problems started and then I got my nasty virus and breathing issues and I’ve struggled to run any distance continuously.

Still have the hip issues and breathing isn’t much better but I’m trying to build back up again gradually. Sort of 2 steps forward and 3 back though I’m afraid. Several health issues that seem to be tag teaming each other. As soon as I get one under control another pops up. 🤣🤣

I am sorry about your health issues Limberlou, hopefully during this year at least they will ease to allow you to run.

Lovely to see you running again Limberlou! When I returned from the IC the physio got me doing intervals, and it’s a great way of getting back to where you were. Good luck to you.

Lol they must have been playing up so just ignore it 🤗 I’ve jogged slower than that and Strava had never said I was walking and I certainly couldn’t walk at that pace. I think you are doing well and what’s more important you seemed to really enjoy it 👍🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

I DID enjoy it and don’t really care what the Apps said - thought it was odd though. 🤣🤣

Don't worry so much about having to walk during a run. If you don't know it yet, look up Jeffing. Most people who Jeff run 30 secs and walk 30 secs, they even do marathons this way and end up faster than many people who run the whole marathon. I myself Jeff my runs at a ratio of 4:30 running + 0:30 walking. It works for me, gives me a nice little breath to calm my breath a bit and I can keep running longer than I would be able without the walking breaks. And no, it's not cheating. If people runs marathons this way and end up doing better than continuous runners, it's not cheating 😉

Yeah I do tend to Jeff more lately but didn’t in the first 2 years of my running once I had gone past the first few weeks of C25k. And strangely, yes I tend to be faster doing that.

Well done on your run today. I’ve decided that walk running is fine and not at all demeaning. At least one is doing some running. Is the Bridge2 10 k like the couch25k app. I’ve been wanting to get to 10 for ages but hips have been grumbling about extended runs so maybe this app would help me if it’s a run/ walk app. 🤣🤣🙃🙃🙃👏👏👏👏👏

It’s very similar. It’s not an App it’s a Podcast but yes it starts with intervals and builds up to continuous running.

My hip started playing up after I got to HM distance and apparently it’s common in older last runners. Look up Greater Trochanter Pain Syndrome which is what I am suffering from ( for 2 years now ) and it says all about it.
