I was in two minds whether or not to run this morning, but after waiting until there was less chance of rain, I decided to set out and see for myself. It was chilly, so wore my windproof jacket, running tights, neck buff and gloves. Good decision.
My Garmin watch didn’t want to find a satellite signal, so I walked up and down the road for a few times while waiting. The lady who lives opposite me was sitting by her window watching, she must have wondered what on earth I was doing! 😊
Signal obtained, I set off in a crosswind to run alongside the river. There is no real shelter from the wind in the fens, so although it had dropped a little from the last few days, it wasn’t much fun! I decided to plod on and my aim was to do a 30 minute run.
There are a couple of dog walkers ahead chatting. I know them both, so I’m not concerned that one of the dogs is off lead, he’s a border collie and extremely well trained. I used to have a dog, a Hamiltonstövare, and she loved him to bits! The owner calls the dog to the side and makes him sit. I know he won’t move as I run past. Naturally, I increase pace as I pass them!
First kilometre and I touch the gate and turn. The crosswind is more at an angle now and running is not easy. There is a little respite as I start the third kilometre heading out of the village, but it becomes more exposed and I know that if I follow my usual route I’ll turn into a headwind, so I decide to increase pace as much as I can and stop at 3K today. I know when I’ve had enough!
I award myself some slack cutting scissors ✂️ and head back towards home. There is a fair bit of traffic today as I walk back into the village. A couple of people wave to me from their cars. I wave back, smiling. No clue who they are, I never notice what cars people drive!
I tell myself that any run is better than no run as I reach home and at least I got out there! I’m looking forward to a run on a calmer, wind free day. For now, there is coffee ☕️

Some run is certainly better than none, well done on going! 👍🏻 The weather has made it tough last few days, even I skipped a day yesterday and I'm as stubborn as a mule 🤣
👏 👍 For deciding to go and I agree any run is better than none. It sounds like a productive run even if it was shorter than planned. This weather has been awful, glad I've not plans to run until tomorrow 🤞I had to Google the dog breed it looks a bit like a giant beagle.
Blimey, well done Jools on getting out in that wind 💨💨💨 it's bad enough here in st.albans, just been for a 2k walk round town, sort of a lunch break, that started about 9am 😉Anyway, you'll need some 💨 behind you, running up those hills in High wycombe! 🥵
Thanks, Peter. Well, that’s a long lunch break! 😊. My Dad and brother live at the top of a 1 in 7 hill. I used to have trouble even walking up it on my paper round when I was 14! To start with, I’ll be driving down to Hughenden Park to run, which is in the valley. I did this when I stayed there last summer, and although it isn’t flat like the fens, I think I’ll be able to manage there for a while until I settle in and start looking for running routes.
Goodness, it is windy out there. A tail wind is great, but not a headwind or gusts! Well done for braving it.I hope to run tomorrow. It was supposed to be yesterday, but I was rather poleaxed by the covid vaccine I had on Wednesday!
Thanks, Roxdog. I know a number of people who have suffered after effects from the vaccine but fortunately I wasn’t one of them. Hope you feel better soon.
Well done Jools for getting out there. I don't enjoy the wind either.You did the right thing in cutting it short - no point carrying on if you aren't enjoying it.
The wind was bad enough here, but it must have been worse where you are - you are so exposed.
The wind has got worse since I went for a run. Hopefully I’ll be able to do a longer run on Sunday. I’ll have to be prompt as I’ve arranged a council bulky waste collection on Monday and I’ve called in the troops tomorrow afternoon to move the stuff outside ready for them. Cheapest way to shift big stuff and another thing to cross off my very long list!
Good luck with that! Hopefully the council will turn up as planned - you don't want stuff hanging around outside for too long.I'm hoping for a longer run over the weekend - maybe Sunday if its still going to be windy on Saturday. Not sure how long yet as I've only been doing shorter runs recently.
I did the same Jools, wind, hail and torrential rain. I looked like a drowned rat when I got home but I enjoyed it in a masochistic sort of way! Roll on spring weather!
