Crappy-de-crap run with a twist.

Went out for a short - will it be twenty or will I do 30 kind of a run today. I wasn't long in before the 20 won out. In fact after 10 minutes I thought sod it, a bit of jeffing is in order here!

(I do love that we have something with a technical term that I can draw on to disguise the fact that I just couldn't be a***d today. 🤣🤣🤣🤣)

The legs were heavy and it was just one of those that I knew was going to be a slog. So I pretty much walked and ran alternate minutes for the rest of the run - feeling like I was on the verge of a stitch into the bargain.

Note to self - HYDRATION!!!!!

Got home and wearily pulled up Strava only to find that my pace was faster than it's been for a while! That was just weird!

Sometimes the runs that feel slow are actually the fast ones. Weird, isn't it?

Fionamags profile image
FionamagsGraduate10 in reply tonowster

Totally! I mean walking as well? Right enough I think it was Dijep who's been doing a lot of Jeffing and finding her average pace is going up. Don't really understand it as I wasn't walking fast or belting along in between.

nowsterGraduate10 in reply toFionamags

My most recent 5¾km "Jeffing" run had a faster average pace than my 8km plod yesterday.

Very odd.

Yep it's me m👍😉 I've found my times are virtually the same and I I'm hoping that when I try a 5k on a non hilly route I might be faster with jeffing than just running. We'll see...

Its odd though, isn't it? I assumed that you were fast walking and running full tilt in between - but presumably not? Mind you Jeff Galloway was an Olympic medallist after all so ....

dijep profile image
dijepGraduate10 in reply toFionamags

Yes definitely fast walking but I don't think my running can ever be described as full tilt 😆 I've noticed that on garmin my cadence has got better. I'm thinking that it's just making my actual running more efficient

I’ve been doing lots of walks, with little ‘trots’ along the way. I haven’t been counting them as runs though, and haven’t had Runkeeper on. Maybe I should? Maybe I’m faster than I think. Might try seeing it as a run with walks, rather than a walk with runs 😂

Give it a go and report back!

You did it though, you got out there and exercised your heart and lungs which to me is the most thing! Strava is just weird sometimes, I only ever trust it when it’s being nice 😂

Ha ha ha you've just gone and ruined it - Strava couldn't possibly lie. 🤣🤣🤣

Maybe it’s the weather Fionamags, my run yesterday was exactly the same 😩, and I had really bad stitch which I haven’t had for ages. I did keep going for the distance and thought I’d managed to finish strong but my pace was much slower than normal and my last km the slowest! Lovely surprise for you to see you were faster than you thought, you never can tell. I’m with you loving those technical walking breaks 😄🤗

Faster pace when it felt slow, heavy legs and on the verge of stitch, oh my it turned out well in the end

Fionamags profile image
FionamagsGraduate10 in reply toSueAppleRun

Yes it sort of did. Crikey at this rate I'll walk my next 10k and Strava will tell me I've got a PB 🤣🤣🤣

I bet your right with thinking hydration is the issue. I had a few runs that felt really hard work and I know in the days before them I hadn't been drinking as much that's water I'll add not gin... Honest 😂

Fionamags profile image
FionamagsGraduate10 in reply todijep

I seem to have increased the gin and decreased the water.... 🤣🤣🤣 We'll not be able to use Lockdown as an excuse for much longer so better get back on the H2O!

Surely you just need to add extra tonic and ice to help with hydration .No need to overreact!

Oh very good - I like that 🤣🤣🤣🍸🍹🥂

Maybe it’s the weather? My 8k today was hard going but also strangely doable, if you ignored tired heavy limbs! Well done!

Fionamags profile image
FionamagsGraduate10 in reply toCBDB

Can you just hear the BBC? The Met Office reports heavy legs in the North today with a touch of stitch. In the southeast we have runners high although heavy legs are forecast for later in the week.

Ummmm, doesnt sound your best run today 🤣 i guess we all get them! My daughter has been struggling with stitch, for a while now, usualy about 2k into runs, maybe the coffee she has pre-run 🤔

Hi Fionamags .. please explain to me what is jeffing? I’m totally confused. Is it to do with the runner Jeff Walker? Or have I totally lost the plot.😫

Fionamags profile image
FionamagsGraduate10 in reply to

It was invented by the former Olympian Jeff Galloway, which is why it's called "jeffing". Its running and walking intervals to gain fitness and running duration. He is one of the coaches on Garmin 10k training plans. You would need to google him to find out more - I don't really know much more than that.

in reply toFionamags

Thank you Fionamags. I got his surname wrong and then I remembered I had read about him. Thanks again . I’ll have do some of this jeffing malarkey 👍😀😀

Sounds good Fionamags. 😊😉Think I’m going to try myself a bit of jeffing.

Well done, wasn't that a nice surprise when you got home? 😁👍 There must be something in the air, I was also surprised by my 5k PB yesterday, my legs felt quite heavy 🤷‍♀️ I think I might also give jeffing a go, seems to be working well for you and dijep! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Fionamags profile image
FionamagsGraduate10 in reply toBeatlesforever

Well it was a default position for me because I wasn't feeling it. Dijep is the one who's really been folliwing it.

WeavingWonk profile image
WeavingWonkGraduate10

Well done! Right before I had to stop running in January (knee issues - now leg issues - still on the IC) I started jeffing. My first 30/30 run was for 7k. And the 5k in the middle shaved over a minute off my best ever running time! It is some kind of voodoo magic! If I ever get off the IC and back in my running shoes I am planning to Jeff my way to much longer runs than I could ever do running continuously!

Fionamags profile image
FionamagsGraduate10 in reply toWeavingWonk

So was it alternating 30 sec running and walking? You are so right - it is totally weird.

WeavingWonk profile image
WeavingWonkGraduate10 in reply toFionamags

Yup! I don't think my problem has anything to do with the jeffing. I was already having issues. But it is odd that to me that when I walk for half of my run my pace is faster than when I run continuously! Of course it's because I have more energy to run faster during the run intervals. And I walk fast when walking.
