Hi everyone... a tad late today but still, wishing you all a happy start to a brand new year!
Can we believe it!
I am lucky enough, with my lovely friend Mummycav to be hosting this month's quest. You all know how much I love being back here on Bridge!
So!!!!
I am not going to do a whole, what has gone before, post....enough doom and gloom to last a lifetime. Phew, I hear you cry!
We have had one heck of a year, that we need to move on from now... we have, I feel sure, all had ours ups and downs , sorrow and joy, but now, is the time for looking forward !
Hence my rather catchy, ( if I do say so myself) , Quest title!
This is going to be a quest and a half, with many, many of us in Tier 4 and with our every move restricted... but we shall find all sorts of ways to challenge ourselves, and to keep moving and Mummycav and I will be adding lots of links and ideas as we move through this month ! We have to be innovative without getting monotonous and we shall be linking to our sister sites for help too!
The weather too can be a tad difficult, so do stay safe and stay warm!
So;
What is the Quest?
The aim of the Quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.
We may find at this time that we really need to focus on what we can reasonably do, and where and when we can do it!
The Quest takes one calendar month. You can join at any point during that time.
Some popular goals are:
β To run three times a week
β To slowly increase distance
β To train for a specific race
β To add Stretch and Strength exercises to your weekly routine
This is a personal challenge, so it's completely up to you! If you want to join, all you have to do is COMMENT BELOW with something like:
I would like to join the Quest, or, count me in! I want to .....
Every week we will put up a new post and we can all chat about how we are doing.
So, get those thinking caps on and let us know what your plans are... but do remember please, to be kind to yourselves too...plenty of rest days and time to just relax. These are stressful times
Its 2021...so let's run!!!
Love Oldfloss & Mummvcav xxx

Good stuff Lmc50..I am doing RED Jan, I did it last year...havenβt done my run yet today and Iβve just had a roast dinner so whenever I get to run this Eve it wonβt be a long one!! π€¨
Ohhhh a roast dinner ( sandwiches again for the night shift π I'm sure I know every sandwiches combination possible by now Bev π€¦) good luck with your Red adventure π
I love a buttie my favourite is tuna, or is it cheese? Or it could be ham...oh, i donβt know, anything with salad in it...I think I ate one too many roast potatoes today, if a bag of spuds could run I could imitate it today π€£π€£
That sounds fantastic!!! I am not doing it this year... sensible head is still on! But I shall watch your progress and watch for your posts! Happy New Year xxx
Happy New Year to you! I love the idea of looking forwards rather than backwards. I'm looking forwards to putting a spell of inactivity behind me. I aim to run 3 times per week starting with run /walks to build back up.
Happy New Year Oldfloss and MummyCav. It was very chilly out there this morning so an extra layer was put on. Mr Garmin gave me a strong starter badge so that was a nice surprise.
My quest in January is to try and do the Breath with Adrienne yoga each day.
To continue doing 1 (not) parkrun each week to get our socially distanced band of 5 together. This is so good for the soul.
I also want to get back to a few long runs again if the weather allows.
OldflossAdministrator60minGraduate in reply to Dexy5
Happy new Year to you both!!!All your targets sound achievable and fun and so, so good for you in all ways!!
Hi Oldfloss. Great title - letβs run away from twenty twenty and forward into the New Year with fresh hope. My quests for January are:
π§πΌββοΈ to do Adrieneβs 30 day yoga challenge over on S&F.
ππΌββοΈ to gradually up my distance now Iβm off the IC.
ππΌββοΈ to run a (not)Parkrun 5k
Iβm going to run with a smile on my face each time, as thereβs nothing like a spell on the IC to make me realise how important running has become to me.
Happy running questers and Happy New Year to all! ππΌββοΈπ
Those sound like great ideas for your quest Hidden ...we could do a (not) parkrun together?? Apparently, smiling while youβre running makes you feel better, instantly...so Iβve been trying it and it works!! Somehow I get a spring in my step when I smile and run π x
Great and enjoyable targets.... slow, steady and enjoy! Smile as much as you like and as often as you like... it works wonders... Happy New Year my friend xx
Over the past 2 years I took part in a 5K challenge everyday for January. I would run 1 day and walk the next with a goal of reaching 155 Kilometers for January. When I did it before it ended with a large group run or walk for everyone whom took part all meeting to finish the challenge together. But this time there will be no organised group run.I did 5K this morning, due to loads of Ice and very slippery conditions I ended up running and walking. So I will be doing 5K everyday for the month of January.
That is quite a challenge!! But I am sure you will step up to the mark and do it..( Okay, mother hen, bit now) do take care and listen to your body.. stay safe x
I have done it a couple of times before. It is a great way to kick off the year and get moving more. I will be walking every second day at least and my running will be gentle. I'm not interested in speed at the moment. I just need to move more. Work off all the Christmas overindulgence's.
I knew Iβd seen this somewhere. This is what Iβm going to try as well. Strangely I think the walking days will be harder to stick to than the running days as it takes so long. Did a 5k walk today, took an hour and five minutes with the kids tagging along.
Dump the kids and power walk it. π I take off with a podcast for my walks and set my Garmin watch to record it as a walk. It usually takes me under 45 minutes and I burn just as many calories as I do on a 5K run. Even if my 2 boys were on their bikes I still wouldnβt complete it as fast as I would on my own.
Hi OF and MC! Lovely to hear from you both! Nice to ignore 2020, no one will miss it.
My quest is to keep on keeping on. I have many challenges running in tandem this month (LEJOG4, Route 66, RED January, SimplyHeath Solo βJanuary Accumulatorβ and Adriene!) Iβm also going to incorporate (Not) PR and force myself to get some intervals under my belt every so often (not my bag, really!)
Letβs work to stay safe and all keep running in 2021. π₯°
I agree..moving on..moving forward and staying strong!! You have hot a few challenges there, but I know you will pace yourself!! Go you.We will watch your progress! Happy new Year xx
Oh crumbs, quest time again! I thought Iβd probably see the year in gently but then realised that Iβve already committed to Adrienneβs 30 day Breathe yoga (absolutely no idea how that will work as Iβm the least bendy person in the worldπ) and Iβm doing regular (not)parkruns with the support Bubble. So my immediate quest idea of slowly increasing distance makes 3 quests! Oops!
Yes, love the title! I want to join the quest. I want to gradually increase my muscle workouts from where they're at. "Gradual" has been working for me.... I also need to work on my mood and nerves, as I've had enough of being jailed at home!
Red January (any walk, any run, any yoga, any turbo etc, just something every day)
The 64MillionArtists January Challenge to work on my creative fitness (and some of that must not be words but should be drawing etc)
Some leftovers from my lovely Advent Fitness Medal Challenge
- climbing the stairs 10x (if I start in the cellar and go up to the top floor that will be quite the workout!)
- always a good one for January and a bugbear for me as keen Quest followers will know... those 15 minute tidying/decluttering sessions. The Medal only asked for one, let's see if I can do at least 5 over the month.
I love these...I am about to finish a December challenge...draw or paint something every day..mine ends 5th Jan!The other challenges sound achievable....except..the decluttering?π
Hi Oldfloss Iβve got the opposite problem being in Australia. Itβs too hot to stand still πIβm going to start my 100km per month target which might be a challenge during the hotter months but Iβll see how I go. Still run / walk β€οΈπββοΈ
Warmth... oh yes.... and well done you. That challenge sounds to be a tough one, and even tougher with that heat! We shall watch for your posts and your progress!
Youβve got me worried now. I think I will be okay at 100k per month π€ After switching to Run/Walk after MAF training, I was able to do 50 miles + for a few months. I did over 100k one month with a total of just over 591K since May. Iβm keen not to have another injury so maybe I will need to keep assessing whether that is doable especially with the heat. Thank you for running the quest this month. Thankful for you guys β€οΈπββοΈ
You will do fine and as we all know here... listening to our body ( not always what our mind tells us... ) is the key. Just enjoy... especially the warmth when you are not running...I am sitting here, it is -3 and outside is a white wonderland with the ground a sheet of ice!
Happy New Year, one day in and I feel I need to watch the number of quests, and then I read about even more exciting quests on here! So Iβm panicking a bit as I might be a-questing a bit too much, but here we go:
My quests for the first 3 months of 2021 are
- have finished the magic plan and run 10k π₯΅ (simultaneously adding this to LEJOG)
- have finished YWAβs 30 day challenge BREATH π³
- have rowed (indoors) the English Channel π±
- have received my first ever medal π
And then somehow I want to squeeze in a bit of Pilates for knees. Iβm still working on how to fit that one in!
Could we have a time machine, please!
Thank you all fellow questers
OldflossAdministrator60minGraduate in reply to CBDB
Phew... well these are some challenges!!! Just maybe prioritise the ones you want most and do try to fit in the knee one, which impacts on the others!
Take it as it comes and don't be afraid to lose one of the challenges for a while. I think there is going to be plenty of time for these and it is important to not to neglect the rest periods also.
I made that mistake earlier this year and after a major physical and mental issue in October, am now back at square one with my running; which incidentally is fun as I an doing C25K yet again!
Going to be watching your progress as you move onwards!
Iβm in - thanks for the invite !Inspired by an earlier post, which I am completely in awe of ... try and reach 10,000 steps per day. OK so didnβt reach target on 01/01 but that is because I didnβt know I was doing it π so gun has gone off and Iβm starting from .... NOW.
Although on IC for running at the mo - can still walk fine so off I go.
Hope to run a little by next week so when I can, will try 3 gentle shuffles a week - hope someday soon to get to 10k but that may be Feb or March.
Wishing fair weather and a following wind to my fellow questers and look forward to hearing about your escapades β€οΈ
Quest time again! πIβm aiming for 10K after completing a 60 min run in December. Donβt know if Iβll complete it this month but Iβm going to work towards it starting half way through the magic plan
Iβm also signing up to run Hadrianβs Wall (90 miles) virtually of course, and not all in one month but it will keep me motivated and finishes with a nice bit of bling. Havenβt had a medal for months π
Looking forward to it πββοΈππββοΈ
Great targets and sounding like fun too! I love the Hadrian's Wall one..is that a Virtual Run... could you give us the link? I like the sound of the medal!!Slow and steady as you go and we will watch for your posts
Of course! I should have said what my goals are...telepathy, being a gift few of us have mastered π€£. So Iβm going for...finishing LEJOG5 by running 5k at least three times per week and at least one 10k. Iβve been somewhat lazy with the old 10ks. Iβve a couple of good circuits here in Portugal, but no natural 10k. This challenge will make me find one though.
My husband and I have it, after nearly 50 years of marriage!!! Those goals sound great...and achievable... and Portugal sounds lovely... how warm is it there right now?
Not tropical. Iβve even had to wear a hoodie a couple of times. But Iβve read where we are in Scotland itβs -7. So glad to be here. Current highs here, in Portugal, are circa 14, but of course much cooler early morning. Not complaining folks, just sayingπ
Moving forward is the thing, right now.... well done you. Good simple goals ! ( Maybe). It is the positive bits that, certainly for me are the hardest!Keep popping in and I will be posting some linked ideas posts too..so watch out for me
Yay! We're back in tandem again Allison - you can't keep good women down :)I've a bit of work to do on regaining my puff but I'm sure you'll crack on grand style since you didn't actually stop all together. Looking forwards to hearing about your adventures. xx
Happy 2021 to you Oldfloss & Mummycav . I posted my runolutions with Hidden , so I suppose a January quest will be the same, a longer than 5km run this week and no alcohol now ( I had my 1 for January yesterday!π₯)
OldflossAdministrator60minGraduate in reply to Jell6
Happy New Year to you and well done...slow and steady.... Son in Law has not been drinking alcohol for ages, he loves the Seedlip range of drinks...Stay safe in this icy weather
Iβm up for the quest! I want to run 3 times a week - that might be tricky as very icy up here in Edinburgh. Also want to increase distance - doing Ju-Jus magic plan. Should also build in strength training. πββοΈπββοΈπββοΈ
Okay and yes...ice is a complete no go! I had my treadmill specifically for icy days! Pop across to our sister site to check out some great strength training ideas too.
I'm doing Breath (Yoga with Adriene and also with my younger daughter), having never tried yoga before. I'd love some strength and flexibility, having had a foot niggle for a bit. Hoping to run twice a week at present but go back to 3 times if foot allows - trying to be really sensible.
Sensible is good! Hard to be, but good... well done you. Take it gently and listen to that foot! I need to look at Breath... loads of folk seem to be doing it!
I want to get back to running 3x a week and run 10K by the end of Feb. I ran my first 7k on 23/12. However not run since due to having to isolate over Xmas. Planning to get back out this weekend!
Me too please. Iβm hoping to do RED January, even if just a mile a day. Longer aims are 500 miles in 2021 and restart Jujuβs magic plan in February, after using RED January to build up a bit more fitness, ππββοΈ
Wonderful motivating idea π I want to do 3 runs per week, mixing in one 10k with Fartleks and Intervals. I am also doing the Breathing/yoga 31 day challenge so every day for this. To top it all in doing Dry January making all the above that much easier ππͺπ€
Those are simple effective and achievable targets! ( She said, enthusiastically). I know that with your sheer determination and passion for the running you will achieve them !
I really do need to look at this Breath program.... Are there many neck exercises in there, which do stop me doing a lot of things!
I love the title, too. Very upbeat and positive which is what 2021 will hopefully be π€
My quest:
Iβve started my βI am Enough 100 mile challengeβyesterday - Iβm hoping to complete it with just running in about 2 months. I ran 90k last month so it is doable but my right heel and calf has been tight so I am watching it carefully. If it takes me longer to achieve, that is fine because βI am Enoughβ. I am also tracking my walks separately and would like to achieve 100 miles of walking in the next 4-6 months. Hubby and I are trying to make evening after supper walks our new norm. So if I can achieve 50 miles of running this month and10 miles of walking, I would be well on my way.
Iβve also started yoga with adrieneβs 30 day Breathe challenge. It has been over a decade since Iβve done yoga with any regularity and have lost most my flexibility so this should be interesting π
Hey you...this all sounds incredible..lots of good targets and I love the supper walks, plan!!The yoga...many folk are doing...I have only taken a peek!!
Good luck with this...and we shall watch for your posts! X
Oh can I join? I'll really need the extra motivation this month if this cold frosty weather continues. So here goes...
* like many others I've signed up for the Breathe 30 day Yoga and day one β so at least I've made a start. π
* to continue with strength work, especially knee related as I've been getting a few worrying twinges.
*continue with my plan to get me to 10miles by February with the help of the lovely Marathon team. But also to be prepared to change my plans if my knee doesn't settle down.
Writing it down is always a bit scary π³
OldflossAdministrator60minGraduate in reply to dijep
Yes.. it makes it real...because, now we know! Plenty of support work for your body is a great idea! Listening to our body and doing what it tells us!Well done you! X
Yeh!!! I love a challenge, count me in, I still want to do a5km in 30mins and need to do more strength training plus I'm doing the 30 day Breathe yoga challenge, but hey what's another one!!ππββοΈπββοΈ
Am currently waiting to see what BoJo comes up with in the press briefing tonight - but I'm determined to stay upbeat whatever. At least we have our running. πββοΈπββοΈπ½π And the days are getting longer π
Back to work today after 2 weeks off to find that a colleague has organised a group challenge on NRC to run/jog/walk 60km between now and the end of the month. Of course I signed up!
I haven't run a 10k since the Vitality London 10,000. The furthest is 7k and that was back in November. So this month I want to work on increasing my distance back up to 10k - and maybe beyond. It will have to be fit in around work commitments via one long run a week at the weekend.
As an incentive to get out there more I signed up to LEJOG9 - only 868 miles left to go - eek!
Yoga is something I'd like to do, but as a total novice I find it really daunting. I also joined the 30 day Breathe yoga challenge, but that's as far as I've got so far on that one. Definitely work in progress there.
Good targets and staying on track is a target in itself. I am playing catch up on Breath... which so many of us are trying! The lockdown we have again!!! may make things trickier but we will find ways to keep moving...inside or out and ways to keep mentally sharp and happy too. I shall watch for your posts !
Just take the yoga at your own pace, I find it tough too as a fairly newbie to it, but I find the benefits so good, not just for flexibility but it calms my mind and definitely de stresses .π§π
Count me in! Iβm running 50 miles this month to raise money for Alzheimerβs Society (a cause close to my heart).
Itβs a big challenge and a lot more than Iβm used to doing but Iβm taking each run very slow and steady. I lost a lot of self-confidence before Christmas with my running ability but I think this focus is just what I needed. Even when I have a βbadβ run (where everything seems to be such a struggle), it all adds to my total and takes me one step closer to my 50 mile target.
Last night, I ran a very slow 5k without walking and I actually enjoyed it (the first time in a while) so Iβm really happy about this new challenge.
I ran my HM last year for Alzheimers UK..my husband is in the early stages of Dementia... this year's was cancelled...so donations until we can run it.
Slow and steady is perfect...not pushing...just taking it gently and letting it evolve, with enjoyment.
Losing confidence is hard...but by believing you will do it, as you are, then you are already half way there! Xx
Iβm so sorry to hear about your husband-itβs such an awful illness. Thank you so much for your kind words. I had another lovely comfortable run tonight-itβs starting to feel enjoyable again.
I never thought a few months ago that this would be possible but Iβm delighted to be proving myself wrong! Xx
Fantastic Purplepianist ...now thatβs something to be very proud of..getting your confidence back through setting yourself a challenge sounds like itβs just the ticket for you...weβre all cheering for you x
