Happy Monday everyone…I hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend…what have you been up to? I hope you haven’t all been washed away in all this rain?!
How are you all?
How is your quest going?
I was up at ridiculous o’clock this morning ready to start week 2 of my return to c25k…I opened my eyes..slunk out of bed…collected my running clothes that had been waiting neatly all night for this mornings adventure…pulled them on, crept out of the bedroom and down the stairs…headphones on, trainers laced then…whoah! THE RAIN! It was absolutely bouncing down…In come the gremlins….’you can’t go in this, you’ll get drenched and you won’t enjoy it…go later, after work’ but then in comes the big voice of MummyCav the rainy runner…‘what’s the worst that can happen? Yes, you’ll get wet…& remember how much you love running in the rain!’
so I found my door key, stepped into the torrent & off I went….and it was RUNDERFUL!

Well done on that rainy run. Once you’re out there, I find then loads of fun. Getting started is the worst bit!
It’s been a good running week for me. I’ve been better at getting out in the daytime which has meant some much more interesting runs than round and round the village! I’m definitely feeling the benefits of those short, slow loops though. Much more like myself now and I’ve had my first 5km run in over a month. The patient, slow build is paying off!
I took MrU out again on Saturday which was great. Normally I’ve got a policy of not turning back for puddles but this one was impossible to pass without getting ankle deep in muddy water right at the start and end of the run. We ended up diverting to a much more hilly route which was fun. 3.7km is our longest joint session and I did a little spring finish to take it up to 4km while he made coffee. A nice result!
My official quest goals are:
One long run a week, one speed session and some easy runs ✔️
5km long run, a short tempo run and some easy runs. Felt like a good week. Next week I’ll try 6/7km but cut short if I need to
Strength session once a week ✔️✔️
Proper stretching after every run ✔️
I’m being generous-there was a super muddy run where I was so distracted by the state of me that I showered first then stretched.
Hooray for revisiting the joy of running in the rain. I had a very little run in the woods which reminded me that I enjoy getting my feet wet on a run... and don't enjoy having to scramble under and over fallen trees.
The hands and feet are getting the unguents, and the yoga is happening not just most days but nearly every day although the sessions are quite cut down (I had a very painful Christmas because I hadn't appreciated I can't currently tolerate my usual practice, certainly not every day)
I'd set myself a mini-target for weight loss for the first week of the Quest and that's the bit that's not worked out. Still eating up after Christmas... but it has been yummy!
I had to laugh at your yummy eating up of Christmas food. Over the weekend I ate up a ginger cake, a big back of crisps and a big plate of cheese and crackers just so I could start this week without any food temptations. Now half a stone to lose now 😂
There should be a rule that no weight loss plans should start until mid January at the earliest for this reason!!! There’s a mountain of chocolate here.
😂😂 I actually put another pound on last week when I was supposed to be cutting down, still eating up the Christmas food 🤦🏻♀️ I needed the comfort eating too due to going back to work. My body is also at least 50% cheese 🧀😂😂
🤣🤣 we should all concentrate on our running/stretching/yoga goals in Jan & weight loss Feb!!! It’s no good when there’s still Christmas in the cupboard!!! We hear ya GoogleMe 😝
I have to applaud you for going out in a downpour that does take commitment 🙌👍. I don't mind getting wet when I'm out but going out in the rain 😞 Not so bad in the summer but it would definitely have sent me back to bed. I'm really happy with my week especially after yesterday when I ran my first 10k of the year, and I didn't even have running quests !
My actual quests were . . .
# daily YWA ✅ I'm really enjoying it, I've only had to play catch up once when I ran out of time on the previous day
# I have done my physio exercises twice this week ✅ I restarted with the easier versions as I've not done them properly for a month or so.
# and I've actually done 2 Pilates classes ✅✅ (my quest was to do just one). I subscribe to an online class and there are lots of 15 -20 minutes options so it's fairly easy to find one too for the things available.
Woo hoo!!! Feeling good, that’s what we like to hear!! Pilates is something I need to do, I just like the name!! I’ve done a few classes in the past but I need to make more time for it…I could really use another 4 hours in my day!!
I love the rain…I would never have dreamt in a million years I would actually get up at silly o’clock to go run in the rain…but I do!!! It’s like a happy shower!!
Well done on going out in the rain Mummycav; I don’t mind getting wet once I’m out but still can’t bring myself to actually go out in it! Maybe I need to make that a resolution this year - to get out in the rain more! I completely missed quest week 1, that’s a great start isn’t it! But I’m here now and having not run since mid-December, finally laced my trainers up this morning and went for a short, slow (very slow!) trot along the seafront. And of course forgot to start my watch so have no details of it! I assume my brain will catch up next time?!
Thank you Oldgirlruns …yes, I would def recommend you put a run in the rain on your ‘to do’ list…it’s so liberating…I find myself running with a daft grin on my face while I’m blowing drops of rain off my nose!!
Doesn’t matter that you missed week 1, you’re here now & we are happy you’re joining us with a realistic goal for the new year …slow always wins the day…if you’re going to fast how can you enjoy the sea front?!! Sea front runs are blummin lovely 😊
Hi Mummycav , well done on that rainy run. I've just been looking out of the window and saying 'nope'.
My goals this month are not too challenging as I want to start the year with a success. January is a tough month in some days, overeating and lots of socialising in December means it can be a bit of an anticlimax, plus everyone else is doing Dry January, Veganuary etc meaning that simple pleasures can inspire disproportionate guilt. In February I'm going to be a bit more demanding of myself, but until then...
My goals:
To run 2-3 times a week: I'm managing twice a week. This is mostly to do with the paths where I run being almost impassable due to mud thanks to the really heavy rain we've had. I don't like running on pavement so I know that once the farmland has dried out a bit this will improve. Even if it doesn't, for this month twice a week is enough.
To run 30 kms in the month: Well on track for this, I've done 13.49 km so far. Before Christmas I'd got into just doing 3km runs, but I'm now back on 5kms as the default so this one should be achievable too.
Ohhhh…just a short little run in the rain might change your mind???? I on ow exactly what you mean with everyone around me doing dry Jan..red Jan…veganuary etc…I have done red January in the past but now I’m working I just don’t have the time…I might do red February instead 😉
Twice a week sounds like enough given the conditions so def stick to that one…and yes, you’re well on target for your 30kms!! Brilliant 🤩
I've been out running when it's started raining before and it wasn't too bad, but I don't really like cold water. It's not the rain that puts me off so much as the waterlogged, muddy paths. They are so boggy and slippery you spend your whole time trying to pick the driest tufts of grass and not fall over!!
This is supposed to be one of the driest areas of the country, heaven only knows what the rest is like!!
Well done nowster …10 mins everyday sounds doable…I remember doing red January in 2021 & some runs I actually did in the house from one bedroom to the other, along the landing, in and out of the bathrooms and back to the bedrooms…repeatedly until I got to 1km..the kids thought I was going bonkers!!
Count me in - running a bit short and patchy for the last few months - ice, wind, rain, Christmas …… so aiming to increase running time and get out 3x a week. Photo from 35 minute run this morning but with leaden legs after 2 bad nights😅
You’re in alpacagirl …very realistic goals there…I’m sure you’ll stick to them…that’s a beautiful picture you’ve shared with us, the sky looks amazing!!
The photo I’ve attached to this post is from my run this morning 😊
Runderful news.... I wondered where that rain rider, MummyCav was !!! Here she is... !
You did well! Wet or not!
Well... my quest.... I am getting there... three walks... the longest of which was one mile..RED January... 30 Days CENTER with Yoga with Adriene. I am a day behind... but that's okay
Daily squats? Back up to 80 + whilst cleaning teeth... and best of all today?
First Care day with small runner in training...in a long time !!! Full on, but not overtired and it was a tad shorter than usual.9 until 3....Mama and Dada want to keep me safe and to build back slowly.
I am happy with how it is going. The post viral fatigue is getting less and less... I wouldn't want to run yet... but I am feeling a heck of a lot closer !
No major goals apart from regular running with no excuses! Oh, and I've joined a yoga class and the 2nd session is tomorrow. We've finished off all the Christmas food. So no excuses!
Yessss…i can see you’re keeping at it …and keeping me motivated all at the same time!! I really do need to do some yoga like you do…I think that every time I see you on Strava!!!
Have you felt different since you stopped drinking in Oct? You’ll have to set a reminder somewhere to remind you to drink water…I think Garmin has that somewhere?? I’m missing my Garmin at the moment…I got an Apple Watch for Christmas but it’s making me sad seeing my Garmin just sat there doing nothing!!
I'm definately sleeping better MC, but we have also given up all drinks containing caffiene which probably helps with that too!(I'm doing this to support Mr BBr)
I never did get a Garmin....all a bit too tech-ie for me😏. Will aim to keep a glass of water on the go though.
Ooooo I don’t like going out in the rain. I don’t mind getting wet when I’m out there but not going out in it 😩 Well done 🙌. My quest is to get back to 10k by the end of the month. I did 7k last Monday and 8k last Friday so I’m getting there. I’ll do 2 treadmill interval runs this week as I’m back at work but I’ll aim for 9k at the weekend ….if it’s not raining 🌧️😂😂. All good here 👍🏻 Happy questing everyone 😁
So good to see you out running Mummycav, I can't remember my quest last week but have been proper poorly so yesterday started walking, and again today, still coughing a lot but enjoying being able to get out and a few steps if trotting near the end of our walk today This week's quest is to walk every day and run when I can
thank you SueAppleRun ..it’s feeling good to be out..sorry to hear you’re not at your best..getting out in the fresh air as and when you can I am sure will make you feel a bit better
A little late to join in, but my quest for January is to get back up to running 5K after a bit of time more foucssed on strength and weight training. Hoping that will have done my muscles and joints some good for the running!
Honestly I'm really struggling this week with starting a new job (same company but different team, the issue being I don't have an obvious role as everything on the team is already allocated) and some January blues which are making me long for the warmer, sunnier days of Spring and Summer! Hoping running regularly again will help me keep the mood up until then.
Better late than never FurtherFaster ..& yes, some strength training sounds like it’s been going well.
Sometimes, as we all know, life gets in the way…even if we see an opportunity for a run, it’s the last thing we really want to do..& that’s ok you know, because your run will be waiting for you out there when you’re ready. Having a new job takes yonks to settle in to, even if you are in the same company, it’s still a massive change.
Spring and summer will be here before we know it…we need to try and embrace all the seasons because they’re all special in their own little way …and we are here to enjoy them…because we can x
Ah yes those wonderful rainy runs! We know we love them once we're out, but it's that initial battle of mind over matter isn't it? It hasn't helped being so horribly windy along with the wet lately either. So well done you! 👏
I've done 2 out of 3 runs - the longer weekend run has yet to materialise though there' still time to make 10k before the end of the month 🤞
I did most of the physio's back and shoulder exercises to combat the niggles, but I'm also thinking of starting Pilates. I had a 1:1 session at the weekend and have a taster group class lined up for this evening.
I also managed to fit in one, of the planned two swims, but still haven't tried out the chest torch. If I prevaricate much more I will have to go out and run at God's hour in order for it to be dark enough! 😁.
Haha…I hear ya Birdlady64 …I like running in the dark too…I’ll be up at 6 in the morning because I haven’t managed to get out this evening…it’s just been one of those days…
Good luck at getting those Pilates in regularly, I keep saying I need to try something like that…I have a sports centre across the road so I really have no excuse except time…although I have been looking at the online ones so I can stay at home. Your quest is going just how it should be…fitting into your life x
Present and correct Mummycav although a bit late in posting 😳
Week 2 (C25K) competed this morning ✅
Physio seen yesterday and given new homework ✅
An outing on the newly acquired rowing machine ✅
So will be heading into next week much the same as before - Physio exercises to strengthen the knee and glutes, complete week 3 C25K and learn to properly row (and not injure my back which I managed to do last weekend on the rower). x
Hello Mummycav and fellow questers. Well done for getting out there and doing your run in the rain! Most of my quests in week 1 didn't go as planned.
1) NO - do my physio exercises at least 5 times a week - just did them 4 times but my physio was happy with that
2) YES - jog at least twice a week, increasing time of each run gradually - did a 5 minute jog and then a 10 minute jog which were both pain free
3) NO - do at least 2 hurt foot friendly yoga classes each week - didn't to any!
4) NO - do at least 1 cardio with weights sitting in a chair once a week- didn't do any! Although I did do a 4 hour shift, volunteering in a warehouse lifting crates etc
5) NO - maybe start swimming - not started yet, just haven't fancied it
I haven't had too much energy to do any core exercises. Maybe on those days I will do gentle stretching instead.
