I hadn’t set the alarm, but woke up early, warm bed felt too nice to leave, but the thought of a fresh early morning run was too good to miss.
I’ve been toying with attempting a 10 mile run for the past few weeks now, and today felt as good a day as any to go for it. Weather was fine but overcast, so two layers on, running hat and......wait for it......my new toy! Bone Conducting Bluetooth Headphones. An early Christmas present 🎁. Bit strange as they sit in front of your ears rather than in them, good sound though and nice not to have wires tucked down my top.
So set off on my alternate route, conquered the dreaded hill at the beginning quite comfortably, then found myself on the flat, got into a nice pace, breathing good and found myself gliding along quite nicely. Saw a few other runners who gave me a friendly smile and wave. Coach Bennett was offering me words of encouragement as I ran and my legs just seemed to carry me along at a decent speed. I felt relaxed today and told myself I was going to enjoy this run and I can honestly say I did.
Within no time I was half way through, turning around and homeward bound. Coach Bennett then suggested Some Fartleks 😳 well I tried to pick up the pace when instructed but it was only slightly. Having reached 8 miles it began to rain, but I found that quite refreshing. Final mile was tough, but eventually heard Coach say ‘Your Done’ I felt great and more importantly I wasn’t out of breath and still had energy for the walk home.
I’m still getting such a kick out of discovering what my body is actually capable of now and how far I’ve come.
Sounds like a great run, a really big well done on the 10 mile mark, a massive achievement. Can’t quite imagine running for 2hrs non stop but maybe one day. You kept up a good average pace, mind you slightly worried about your average heart rate ! If that average continues I would see a Doctor !! 😂😂
Thanks, it was a lovely run and I honestly couldn’t believe how my legs could carry me along for that distance at such a pace. This running journey never fails to surprise you.
It’s amazing isn’t it? I love just plodding along slowly for longer, although enjoy a bit of a fast sprint here and there too, what i enjoy is going out with little in the way of a plan and seeing how it goes
Well done on your first 10 miler Couchphoenix - great achievement! Probably a good thing that you didn’t pay too much attention to Coach Bennetts suggestion for Fartleks on such a long run!😱I’m getting some Aftershokz bone conducting earphones for Christmas - and hope I get on ok with them given the price!😬
Thanks Sandraj39, I was surprised to hear him suggesting fartleks at that stage, but I did my best to pick up the pace a little. The Aftershokz are good, bit weird when you first put them on, but comfortable and have a good sound too. I’m sure you’ll be fine with them 👍
Fantastic run CP! Congratulations on reaching 10 miles 👏👏👏. You've been close before, with your jaunt to the Green Man. I may get there one day, but it might have to wait until next year.
And that's a cracking pace over that distance, with a not insignificant elevation gain as well.
How did you find the earphones? I was getting fed up with wire down my top too, so I just treated myself to a pair of wireless earbuds, but now I'm wondering if I should have gone for bone conducting ones instead. I wear specs so wonder how they'd work together.
Thank You 😊 Your right, I was close to 10 miles before and didn’t realise it 😬 as for my pace I surprised myself today. I’m not sure how you’d get on with those earphones as a glasses wearer, might be bit awkward, so maybe you made the correct choice.
HM.....never say never, but would need a few more long runs first. Having said that when I’d finished, I left myself with about a 2 mile walk home.
😂 I remember I did that on my first 60 minute run back in the summer. I decided to just keep going. It was a rush to get back home in time to start work and in fact I seem to recall fast walking/jogging it!
Just to let you know David_G has told me he is a specs wearer and he says he has no problems with wearing the Aftershokz headphones, so maybe they’d suit you after all 👍
Congratulations on your first 10 miles, that’s an awesome achievement 🏆 Sounds like a great run, great discovering your limits and pushing yourself, love it.PS also very concerned re: heart rate 0bpm, but all the more awesome accomplishment! 🎉🏃🏽♀️
Brilliant well done sounds like you smashed that 10miles in easily !
Hope u got on ok with swanky new head gear too , be interested to see what u think to them , I been looking at them .. as I wear big over ear headphones as can't do inear ones...
Thanks D-F 😊 it felt good to finally complete that distance. New headphones were really good, sound was good and they felt comfortable too, I hardly knew I had them on 👍
Aaahhh thanks Grannyhugs 😊(what is it about that name) I was really surprised at my pace, legs felt great and just seemed to have a mind of their own today as they carried me along. Really enjoyed it, toughest part was the last mile, so pleased I reached that distance 😄
But you still did that last mile and next time it will be easier - Christmas Day 10miles? It’s a great pace to allow you to cover longer distances. I love my name, I was Grannytobe until 1st grandson was born in February, some discussion on here about what my new name should be. We’ve been socially distanced almost since I changed it but thanks to it I can spread those virtual hugs that we are all missing in real life. Luckily grandson has heard about social distancing and physically shares his with me 🥰
Thanks Jools2020 😊 I am enjoying the feeling, I’ve just got back from walking the dog and legs feel fine, which is good. I think Fartleks at that stage was a bit ambitious, especially as your pacing yourself. I had a go but you’d have needed some sophisticated scientific equipment to see any difference in speed 😂
Thanks David_G I felt it was a milestone and it’s important to achieve those, so you know your improving. I’d been toying with it for a while and today seemed right. Thanks for letting me know about the specs I’ll let Birdlady64 know 👍
That is mental!.... A mental pace for any run let alone a 10 miler!.... Awesome Geoff... I'm on my laptop so no clapping hands or emoji's!.... but brilliant! 2 hours straight running!.... You must be well chuffed... and of course I think you get another virtual badge on here don't you?....
Thanks Jane, it was a really nice run, I’ve been thinking about going for the 10 miles for a while now and I think I chose the right day as I felt strong and my legs just carried me along at a decent pace. Not sure if there’s a virtual badge or not 🤷♂️
