the build up to my vitality 10,000 challenge has not gone well.
Despite the limited contacts and social distancing I think somehow (how? 🤷🏻♀️) I’ve picked up a virus ( not THE 🦠) unless it’s just me beginning to fall off my perch 😆🤣 I’ve been feeling so rough, drained and flatter than a pancake.
Last week I missed one run but managed an 8k last Saturday but was then horrified when I looked at my stats to see my heart rate spent a fair bit of time around 180bpm and I was jogging pretty slowly! (my average for the run was 148bpm). I’d actually turned my polar heart rate monitor off as it kept beeping so much I thought it was malfunctioning and I kept going, ....but actually it was me 😱 malfunctioning. Strangely at the time I didn’t feel too bad, hence running the planned 8k.
Anyway I still didn’t feel too well this week and missed my first 2 runs. I had a terrible nights sleep last night and woke early so I decided to head off to see how I was. It was raining but I didn’t mind so much even though I’m not a fan of rainy runs. It was very hard, I needed a lot of walking breaks, felt very tired after just 15 mins and then after a bit of a walk on a hilly bit picked up again. I managed just over 6k and I was relieved to see my average heart rate was back to normal at 123bpm. It felt like I worked much harder. Feeling shattered again now so really hoping my energy picks up soon.
I’ve moved my first 10k, vitality challenge back a week to the last weekend of October so hopefully with the extra week I can get there. My bib arrived this week and it would be such a shame not to give it an outing.
Well done to so many completing their first 10k recently, I’m really hoping to join you soon.
Thinking of those who are locked down again this week and hope the running can help.
So sorry to hear you're feeling rough, isn't it just typical when you've got something you really want to do. I have no idea how you managed to keep going when you clearly weren't feeling too good, It's have been on the sofa 🤣
Finger crossed 🤞 that giving yourself that extra time you'll be feeling better to get running the Vitality 10k. I also got my bib this week so I'll look forward to running the 10k virtually with you 😊
Thanks dijep, sooooooo glad we’ll be running this together, I’ve got a bad case of ‘The loneliness of the long distance runner’ , I think it ends with me running away 🤣🤣. Seriously though 😉 I keep going because I am super stubborn, and I need to achieve something 🤷🏻♀️
Thanks Beatles, Mr Jorge dragged me out for a walk in the sunshine this afternoon and I’m feeling quite a bit better this evening, although it could be the 🍷 🤗
It seems to have been a tough week for many this week. I do hope you haven't picked up anything nasty. I have learnt a lesson, to rest when needed and not push myself if I'm under the weather. Hopefully this is just a short blip. At least you're running! I'm not brave enough to check my heart rate and rely on instinct in the hope I won't explode!
🤣 that made me smile Roxdog, thanks, yes I think it’s tough times all round at the moment, in one way or another, ....feeling a bit better this evening so 🤞 for next week. I’d love it if I could get back to my 3 runs 🤗
There has been a bit of a nasty virus going around with some of my work colleagues so there is something doing the rounds. I hope you feel better soon.
Best to rest up and hopefully recover in time for the Vitality London 5,000. You have until November 1st to do it
Thanks Birdlady, yes still plenty of time and I’m pretty determined to do it as hoping to raise some money for the local cancer hospital opening next year. 🤞🤗
Yes, definitely, I think it helps and is a great motivator to think we’re doing it to benefit others not just ourselves , good luck with your fundraiser 🤗
Thanks Phdgranny, the virus’s these days are so strange, do you remember when there was just a cold or the flu or is that just looking back with rose tinted specs? 🤗
You did well to get out there when recovering from a virus. Sounds like you need to give yourself a bit longer to recover though? You will be fine in a couple of weeks and will grab that 10k with both feet!!!!
You’re probably right Fionamags, patience with myself has never been my strong point! I find it hard to let myself rest at the best of times, I blame it on early training, ‘if you’re not dead you can go go to school/work’ 🤣🤣🤗
Thanks David, I do feel quite a bit better this evening so hopefully I’m on the mend, I’ll try to take it easy this week, I must remember we don’t lose our fitness built over months overnight so I’m hopeful even if I don’t run much next week I could still make the 10k mark at the end of the month 🤗
So sorry that you haven't been feeling well. Our senses are heightened to every cough and sniffle at the moment. I do hope that you are on the mend and enjoyed some of the autumn sunshine and fresh air on your walk today. Take it easy when you start back 🤗
