First sub40 5k this year!!! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜

Struggled out of bed this morning but I was determined to break out another pair of new leggings ( courtesy of lovely daughter again). Sheโ€™s trying to reinspire me where Iโ€™ve been a bit โ€œmehโ€ lately. And she has ...and I may never wear real clothes again now. ๐Ÿ˜

Came downstairs and procrastinated a fair bit and then finally off I went at 9.30 - so late for me!!!! But it is cooler now and I think thatโ€™s why I am finding it easier to run. I couldnโ€™t decide which way I was going but set off as though I was going to run towards the industrial estate and loop back round by the Comp, then changed my mind partway and turned towards Civic Centre and then Tarka Trail and went downriver ( which I havenโ€™t done lately) and then turned and cut back through the industrial estate from that angle. I was determined to run 5k at least today as Iโ€™ve been pootling around 3-3.5 lately while Iโ€™ve been building up my speed.

Then I crossed the carriageway and down through the cut through. And finished up near home at 5k...... and my first sub40 this year. Now I realise for some thatโ€™s no big deal. But it it is for me as Iโ€™ve been fighting to get back my fitness all year, ... 3 steps forward and 4 back it has seemed like.... but now I feel like Iโ€™m getting somewhere again. Iโ€™ve had a couple of 40.05s but finally this morning it was 39.45.

Now do I chase my PB of 37:42? Or do I try for distance again? (only up to 10k this time as Iโ€™m not hurting my hip again if I can help it). Iโ€™ve done a couple of 10ks in June and July but now I feel I want to speed up if possible. Hmmm. Iโ€™ll have a think and see how I feel by Friday ( next run).

Obviously it was my new leggings made all the difference this morning ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

I know. Was a bit warm as Iโ€™m used to shorts but they are so colourful it cheered me up on a grey morning

Well done on getting your sub40 minute 5K. I hear ya! Iโ€™ve been a little bit โ€œMehโ€ lately too. But just like you Iโ€™m now on a mission to get my mojo back.

10K is great for 5K endurance and 5K speed training also works at increasing 10K pace. 10K and 5K work really well together. Iโ€™ve no real interest in running longer than 10K.

Nope- I pushed myself last year to HM - just to see if I still could ( last time was 25 years ago!!) and then Iโ€™ve suffered with hip issues ever since ... hopefully gone away after the jab ๐Ÿคžso 10 is going to be my limit too now.

When I think I now have asthma, arthritis, high BP and Iโ€™m 67.... why am I pushing myself? I have no interest in races so why not just run and enjoy it? ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to limberlou

Absolutely. I love 5K because it's about 30 minutes. 10K is an hour on a good day. The thoughts of running further than that, no thanks. I have nothing but admiration for anyone running half marathons, marathons and ultra's. But I am happy out at 10K. I can't even run 10K right now. I'm training to get back there again.

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate10 in reply to damienair

Yeah I took 3 hours 20 mins to do HM. Far too blooody long on a hot August day too. Never again!!

AlMorr profile image

The longest run that I have ran is 10 miles, that took me around 2 hours 3 minutes, IF I did attempt a half marathon I think I would have a cut off point of at the most 3 hours, if I had a short two minute walk at 10 miles, say at 2 hours 5 minutes the last 5K could be run at 40 minute pace getting a HM in 2 hours 45 minutes, the next time I run 10 miles I MAY consider running on another 5K, as they say here, 'that is a parkrun'

Trouble was Iโ€™d decided I was doing it that day and it turned out to be one of the hottest days ๐Ÿฅต๐Ÿฅต๐Ÿฅต

Lovely leggings limberlou, and well done on your sub 40 mins. I agree the temperature is so much better for running now and I was back in crops this morning.

I am on week 2 of jujuโ€™s plan again now, so do come and join in. It officially starts again this week with Ju-Ju back at the helm.

Off course its a big deal limberlou. You're obviously feeling so much better which has given you the energy to keep going to 5k and I better not forget , your new leggings . Nothing like a new piece of running kit to spur you on.

Happy running ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thanks. Iโ€™m thinking itโ€™s a combination of new inhaler, magnesium supplements which are helping me sleep and the leggings ๐Ÿคฃ

Those are jazzy leggings! I love them. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜€ Iโ€™m still in shorts for now.

Yeah Iโ€™d have preferred shorts but theyโ€™d sold out of shorts in every pattern she thought Iโ€™d like .. except for the Lockets dragon ones ๐Ÿ˜

Iโ€™ve got some cracking ones to break out now, thanks to my lovely daughter

It IS a big deal so well done you! I'd go for both targets now. Start to run ever longer and slower and once in a while attack the 5k PB. I think the two help each other.

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate10 in reply to

Thanks. Iโ€™ve been trying to get back to pre โ€œ whatever the hell virus it was I had for 3 months last winterโ€ fitness. I used to run 7/8k regularly and at least one 10k a week and if I did a 5k it was โ€œonly 5kโ€. And Iโ€™ve managed a couple of 10ks his year but itโ€™s been a struggle. Hopefully Iโ€™m past that now and can run comfortably again.

Slinkymalinki profile image

Love the leggings! I think that's a brilliant 5k time. For some reason over the last few months my average pace has got quite a bit slower. I'm doing a longer walk/run with a friend at weekends with the hope of getting to 10k again and that my 5k time might eventually improve. Those distances are quite enough I think!

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate10 in reply to Slinkymalinki

Yeah Iโ€™ve been much slower this year but Iโ€™m getting there again... and Iโ€™m always better once itโ€™s cooler.

Definitely the new leggings, theyโ€™re fab. Now Iโ€™ve retired Iโ€™m living in leggings! Well done on the sub 40, itโ€™s hard coming back from injury- Iโ€™m still at 48mins so a way to go for me.

Iโ€™ve come back once from fractured ankle, then broken toes, then this was what my Dr thinks was early COVID end of last year. Wiped my breathing out for ages. New inhaler, new leggings, new me!!! ๐Ÿ˜

LOVE those leggings, where did she get them? Even my mojo might come back if I had a pair of those!

As for your time, my ONLY running ambition is to pull off a sub-40 5K, so I think youโ€™re doing great! My best time was 41 minutes in the first race I ever did, three years ago, and I havenโ€™t been able to beat it since. Still trying though!

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate10 in reply to shsoga

Stupid me. THIS was a pair I got myself after she sent me the link to the site. It was from Kukubird. Really cheap too but lovely feeling and they wash well. My flamingo ones are on there too but I got them from Groupon.

SHE got me the green dragon capris, the blue leggings ( I am wearing today ) with green pink and maybe cartoon dragons on ( I like dragons) and a pair of Moonlight Moths ( Lucy Locket Loves). I love the LLL ones but she is twice the price of Kizzy or Kukubird or Be Your Happy Place.

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate10 in reply to shsoga

Just to say a parcel has arrived with some more leggings she bought for herself and a pair of capris for me - from Be Your Happy Place- and they are lovely and the body is nice and long. I have a couple of pairs that allow me to roll over the top and these come up nice and high, no roll.

Iโ€™m so envious of your fabulous leggings collection limberlou! I donโ€™t have the legs (or rear end!) for them. Doesnโ€™t stop me thinking theyโ€™re fab-U-lous though! Well done on your sub 40 as well - thatโ€™s another thing I aspire to! Happy running!

limberlou profile image

I have the legs and a small rear end but itโ€™s my belly that lets me down. Apple shaped definitely!!!!! Very ripe apple at that!! ๐ŸคฃThank goodness for mens baggy running tops !!! They are longer too and cover a multitude of sins ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

I suspect that those leggings knocked minutes off your run some might say cheating ha ha, well done you my best 5k is about 38 minutes but normally 40 something so obviously I need leggings too ๐Ÿค

Iโ€™m sure itโ€™s the leggings

5k in 40 mins sounds pretty good to me! I'm currently doing just under 4k in 30. I think maybe I need to push a little at the end next time, even just an extra minute or to see how far I can get.

PS I just snapped up a couple of pairs of leggings in the Happy Place sale (only a tenner each!!!) so can report back on whether they are a deciding factor! Thanks.
