One niggle after another

I started c25k a year ago today and ran through until early April without any issues. I then went over on my ankle on some even ground and ever since I've had one issue after another. I have always stopped running to give chance for the niggle to recover (the thought of not being able to run for a long period of time fills me with dread 😱) and feel like I've not rushed into long runs again but something is obviously going wrong πŸ˜• πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Any words of wisdom from you lovely people would be much appreciated 😊

Have you had any professional advice? It could be there is some weakness there that would benefit from strength work. I used to see a sports osteopath for a number of different injuries, and I had to do a lot of different exercises to strengthen the weaker muscles. I hope it eases soon.

Yes I've got a weakness in my left glute which I'm slowly building up.... but I don't know if there are any other weaknesses

Thats great you are building that up. Often it can be a very small weakness that then has a knock on effect everywhere else.

Sorry about your injuries Mum22boys, especially as you have started LeJog, I understand that it would not be wise to run at all, better just walking for the moment If you injury doesn't improve you could see a physio or doctor and they may be able to give you professional advice.

I do hope you can find help to get sorted soon M22boys.... it’s frustrating for sure... What to do whilst waiting to run again? it’s a good question and one I find quite a challenge... just when I start to feel stronger something else goes wrong, ... I’m finding reading books about running tales is helping, they talk about perseverance and patience when injuries set in, ... having a mantra seems to work well for many when running so why not when we can’t run, β€˜I will run again, I will run marathons’

Stay strong and keep smiling, it will come πŸ€—

Thank you jorgeRuns for a lovely response. Sorry to hear you're struggling too. I like your idea about having a mantra, I'm going to give this some thought... watch this space πŸ˜‰

No words of wisdom to offer but just wanted to say sorry to hear about your new niggle. Super hard to not run when you just want to run. I love Hidden mantra❀️

Oh dear, sorry to hear you're still suffering a bit! Perhaps think about contacting a physio to help you be confident you're doing the right exercises etc. It is frustrating, but you will come back stronget once you've sorted out what you need to work on. The heady days of completing cto5k I think lead to needing to build in strength training so that we can continue running, especially if we're no longer youngsters!

Good luck and keep posting!

Thanks Roxdog. I've had a couple of online physio appts which focused more around the hip issue caused by weak left glute... although running causes that no trouble at all! I've found a sport's physio about half an hour away who gets really good reviews. I've left a message so just waiting for a call back. I need to get this sorted so I can carry on with confidence

So sorry these niggles are hampering you from getting out when you enjoy running so much! πŸ˜•

I wonder if a physio will be able to help. Delays are certainly not denials Mum22boys! I hope you’ll find the right remedy soon and be back out running without the niggles!! Best wishes for finding a great solution!! πŸ€— ❀️

An ankle injury can create all sorts of problems for ages afterwards as it affects your balance. I’ve had a couple of bad sprains and so can tell you what I’ve learned along the way πŸ™„

Do strength exercises for your ankle every day if you can. Check out YouTube but β€œdrawing” the alphabet with each foot and standing on one leg are the best ones.

Stretch out your calves regularly. An injured ankle will tighten calves and then that’ll make your ankle more prone to injury again.

A sprain means that the ankle will be more prone to another sprain in the future, hence the need for strengthening. Also, stretch your ankles too.

If your ankle flares up then consider wearing a support bandage for runs.

I hope you get the niggles sorted and the ankle doesn’t give you any more grief.

Thank you for this, really informative and helpful. I think this is a flare up of that ankle injury... I haven't done anything specific but it kind of feels the same. After the initial injury I rested for a couple of weeks and haven't felt in since so I don't understand why now πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I'm trying to book a physio appointment.. see if I can get this sorted once and for all

It’s horrible having to take a break. Go see someone. I was thinking about a sports physio to get me started on some corrective exercises. I have a hip issue too. Want to fix it before it gets worse. The strength and flexibility training seems to have worked for me so far. Really good luck with your appointment 😍

Mum22boys profile image
Mum22boysGraduate10β€’ in reply toHappyNoodle

Thank you 😊 none of it seems to be serious but I seem to have to take a weeks break every few weeks. Having ryn my first 10k early July I just seemed to have gone backwards! But feeling positive about getting stronger!

Happy Anniversary!!

Thank you so much for your reply πŸ€— can't believe it's been a whole year!! And thank you for taking the time to send me those links. I've just been watching some James Dunne video's so looking forward to watching these 2. I have booked a physio appointment for Wednesday afternoon so first step is seeing what they say. I determined to get stronger πŸ’ͺ and to get back running consistently, not running makes me grumpy πŸ˜‚

Will be interested to hear how you get on. I see a physio who is also an osteopath on Thursday. Thought I'd cover all the bases 🀣🀣🀣

That sounds like a good plan πŸ˜‰πŸ˜…

I'm convinced I've aggravated whatever I did to my foot when I went over on it in April... literally no trouble with it between then and now but as of Sunday evening it's been a little swollen and achy. I'm really interested to see what he's going to say, I'll let you know. Good luck for Thursday
