Southsea (not) parkrun #2

The motley crew of Oldgirlruns , Dexy5 , Coddfish x 2 and me have just completed our second scattered (not) parkrun, the aim being to start wherever and whenever it suits, but finish at the same place at the same time. Mission accomplished within about a 5 minute spread, with takeaway coffee from one of our regular pre-covid post-parkrun haunts and a long natter to follow.

A fairly gentle mostly onshore breeze was slightly against me on my way out, which produced a slightly slower second k after my initial enthusiasm wore off, but a steady improvement on the way home, with a 4'45" final k, gave me a respectable 24'30" overall, 13 seconds better than last week - and for a moment or two at least, top place on the Southsea leaderboard :-)

Competitive - moi? :-( :-)

Well done all. Weather looks lovely there. It is grey and drizzling here all morning. Well done on another (not) parkrun run.

Yep, definitely sunny Southsea today. But curiously, didn't sweat at all - obviously not working hard enough :-(

The sun always shines in Southsea. Well, at least it shines here more often than in much of the UK and Ireland. We have a little local micro-climate caused by the Solent, it can often rain heavily 3 miles away (as it did last Thursday) but stay clear and dry here, but with a ring of cloud visible to the north, east and west.

Good photo and a great run and time for you today UTS, you must be very pleased with yourself that your time to was 13 seconds better than last week.

My second (not) parkrun will be on Saturday at 9.30am. 😊 🏃🏾

Thanks Al, not bad at all - bit too quick for the first 200m I think, paid for later. So hopefully still scope for further improvement .....

well done UpTheStanley. Wasn’t that great? Bacon baps , cAppuchinos and great friends. On top of that - - my first 5k without stopping. Whoop whoop whoop!

Congratulations to you Dexy5 on completing your first 5k without stopping from coming back from the IC, well done, I am sure you you enjoyed your run and your bacon baps

Thanks Al, it actually felt easier than last week’s run , probably because I started slower, and made sure I drank lots of water yesterday. It was very hot out there today but the breeze helped to keep us cool. 37:01 compared to my parkrun PB of 31:38. But getting the miles in is most important at the moment.

That is a very good time for your first 5K for a while, this week marks ayear since I bought my running shoes, I remember posting a photo of them on the C25K forum, tomorrow l will be running my 10th 10K in them.

Next month I am going to run by 1K more a week and try and get to 16K or 10 miles by the end of July, yes, into longer runs than I have ever ran 🏃🏾, I'll have to wait see how far I can get. 😊 🏃🏾

That’s great Al, it will be good to get the 10 mile badge against your name. I found I need to take water and nutrition out with me when going beyond 10k.

Thanks for the write up. I love the life belt centre stage in our photo. Keeping contact with you guys through all of this has definitely been a life belt.

Yes we have had fun, from virtual cocktails on Skype to distance American suppers in our gardens. Won’t it be great to have a celebration meal in a restaurant one day?

Great stuff UTS!

"You can take the runners out of Parkrun...but you can't take Parkrun out of the runners!"🤣🤣

Glad to see you are sill smashing out some amazing times too!👏💪

Thanks - it used to be the time I could routinely knock off after a couple of runs following a few months off. Now it’s the time which reassures me that the inevitable decline hasn’t set in yet! 😀💀

Congratulations to UTS for knocking off another few seconds ( I noted the 71% age graded on the results table - very impressive!) and to Dexy for your first non-stop 5k post injury - congratulations!🎉

I decided to get out early given the increasing heat, so managed to complete 10k 'over the hill' by 9.00.

Unfortunately no indication in today's announcement when 'non-professional' sporting activities might be on the cards again. 😢

Thanks JP - I think the age grading was probably improved by becoming older last week 🙄. Any chance of you joining us next week?

JonathanP profile image
JonathanPGraduate10 in reply to UpTheStanley

Yes, mine had a boost in April.

Not sure at present - will let you know if I can.

Dexy5 profile image

Thanks JP, He’s not bad for a 69 year old is he? No group sports yet, but (not)parkrun has given us such a real boost. There were only 34 runners in southsea last week so I don’t think many people have signed up for emails. But I’m sure word will get out .

Not bad at all! Yes we only had 19 at Lakeside, but I agree it will grow.

Excellent summation of proceedings UTS! Sorry I’m a bit late commenting - I blame that Dexy for taking me down to the beach this afternoon to lie in the sun! But it was a great morning, even if my 50:37 time was awfully slow! And I’m so pleased for Dexy who managed her first non stop 5k since clambering off the IC! I’m enjoying non-parkrun - Starting 30 minutes before everyone else so that I can come in at the same time is great. When we eventually get back to the real thing, I’ll be way behind again! Happy running motley crew!

You are doing great Oldgirlruns. I reckon once you get new shoes you’ll be bounding along.

Great running UTS. Having legs twice as long as everyone else must help you achieve such speedy runs 😂 Great to see the Southsea bunch in regular action. Don’t tell Mr Sandie, but I am plotting a trip down as soon as parkrun starts up or as soon as we get back from France, whichever comes sooner 🤫
