No records were broken today, it wasn’t fast or long but it was the start of my gradual return to running after 7 weeks on the IC with knee injury.

Upon setting off I could feel a slight twinge on my knee, but it was not the pain that I had experienced on my one and only previous attempt at a return to running after 2 weeks on the IC.

So I continued slowly but surely, and the discomfort disappeared after a few minutes to my relief.

I only ran a total of 2 k with and average pace of 6.54 m/ per k ( see what I mean about no records broken ? 🤣).

Yes I could have gone faster and yes I could have run for longer, but at the moment I am only focussed on a sustainable return to running and gradually building up again.

Back home now and after having warmed down, stretched, and showered I experienced something I haven’t had for a long while, that post running high. What a wonderful feeling it is and how I’ve missed it.

Happy running all 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️👍

Great to see you back running. Best just to run short and slow runs just for now. You sound so happy . Have a great day 🏃‍♂️

Thank you very much Buddy34.

Yes you're right I am very happy, and also relieved.

And yes my plan for my return is short and slow runs for now, I know I have to be careful.

Wishing you a great day too :-)

That’s excellent news Martin! The initial stirring from the knee was probably its reaction to the movement of running again - “hey, what’s going on here? Oh yes I remember this” 🙂

I understand your joy at running again after a spell on the IC, welcome back 🏃🙂

I appreciate all the great advice you gave me IP when I was first on the IC, thank you 🙏

Yes it’ll take a little time for the body to adjust to running again. It’s great to be back out again ( even in the rain ☔️).

Thanks too for the welcome back and happy running to you 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️😊

What a great run to start back with. This my happy distance pace😀 .I think you are right to take things slowly and gradually. You will feel little niggles, just your joints, muscles and tendons remembering what to do. Happy running 🤗

MartinKHGraduate10

Thank you very much Grannyhugs.

Yes I did definitely feel some niggles today, but so relieved to be able to run free of pain.

Will def take things slow and steady initially. Really want to stay off the IC now and continue to gradually build up.

You’re doing amazing with all those miles you’re clocking up, fantastic stuff.

Happy running 🏃‍♀️ to you too.

All sounds good Martin - that first run back after injury is a special one and you were very right to take it slowly! Build up slowly too - knees can be tricky things ( I know this from my own experience!). Best of luck.🙂

Thank you very much Sandra, I really appreciate the benefit of your experience.

Yes I will build up slowly.

Happy running 🏃‍♀️ 👍

Happy running 🏃‍♀️ to you.

Well done buddy. Great stuff. You did the right thing as now you're out you can stay out. Slow and steady really will be key for you. Welcome back runner 😊

Thank you very much mate, I sincerely appreciate all of your encouragement all the way through my long stint on the IC.

Yes I’m intending to build up nice and slow and steady.

It was funny and nice today halfway around when I knew it was going alright I suddenly thought it’ll be nice to pop an update on the forum here and let all the good folks like you know how I’m getting on.

Hope all is well with you, and your knee is alright and not stopping your great progress.

Happy running 🏃‍♂️👍

Yay, Martin’s back! Well done on your (not slow in my book) 2k. That’s fantastic and you’ll soon be building back to longer distances! Go you. 🏃 🏃

That's slowish for me, but maybe that's what caused my injury 😂

It’s also the reason I’ve never been injured! 🐌 🐌 🐌 😅

WAIT - I had to come back to edit that response with a massive Touch Wood! 😅😅

Ah, thank you so much Cheeky. It's great to be back.

Congratulations to you on your recent runniversary, I loved reading your post about it and blooming awesome what you have achieved in 2 years.

Thanks Martin! Time has definitely flown and I still need to pinch myself that I’m now a fully fledged runner (ie I have actual bling! 🏅)

It’ll be fantastic hearing about your comeback runs too. I expect great things! 🏃🏃🏃🏃

MartinKH profile image
MartinKHGraduate10 in reply to cheekychipmunks

I'm sure you have earned every single piece of your bling 🏅

I don't have any bling (yet :-)) and have only ever done two park runs so far, on the last two Saturdays immediately before lockdown. They were amazing.

I'll definitely keep you and all the other lovely folks on here posted on my progress, although initially I'll be erring on the side of caution and building up slowly and steadily.

Thank you again Cheeky, and happy running.

Ahh, the first run back apprehension and joy in equal measure. But afterwards, utter joy! Now you need to gather your last reserves of patience and restraint ...

MartinKH profile image

You have hit the nail on the head there Linda with the apprehension and eventual joy.

And yes you are spot on too about me needing to dig in to reserves of patience and restraint.

Thank you, and happy running.

I've practiced this dance too many times 🤣. On my first run back after over four months off I whooped and threw my arms in the air and cried - all within the first 10 'running steps'. The emotion was too much to keep in check. Luckily it was quiet out at the time - I just hope there weren't too many curtain twitchers 😳

I’ve yet to venture out after my knee injury, so reading your post has given me a bit of encouragement. I’m not ready yet though as my knee doesn’t feel 100% yet.

MartinKH profile image
MartinKHGraduate10 in reply to Getfitok

I’m glad to hear my post has given you some encouragement.

You are wise to hold off at the moment if your knee isn’t feeling 100%. You’ll know when you’re ready, and ( as others advised me ) listen to your body on that first run back especially.

Wish you a speedy recovery.

Glad to hear you're back to running! This is encouraging to me as I haven't been running for nearly3 weeks due to a high hamstring injury and think it will be another 2 or 3 weeks before I tentatively try to run. Doing lots of exercises to resolve it and they do seem to be working. Really worried about running again and also really missing it.

Take care and good luck with your runs.

MartinKH profile image
MartinKHGraduate10

Thank you very much Roxdog.

I’m sorry to hear you’re on the IC with your high hamstring injury.

I can fully understand your combination of concern about running again and you also missing it.

I had exactly the same feelings, and was really concerned about my first attempt to return to running after two weeks out had to be aborted within 100 metres due to sharp knee pain.

You are doing the right thing waiting to recover more before coming back, and it sounds like you are doing all the right things to further aid your recovery with the exercises you’re doing.

You’ll know when you’re ready to come back and have a gentle return to ruining again. Being patient now is absolutely the right thing.

Looking forward to hearing about your return, when the time is right. Take care in the meantime.
