Its 05:30 , I close the door quietly behind me - its raining ,but I don,t care . Im ready "we're off"! Im running !
The road is wet underfoot , my feet squish and squeak as they displace the water running down the shiny black tarmac.
I feel breathless and leaden footed , like I have never run before , but thats normal !
Up past the back to back terraced houses , windows all ajar ,Its summer time in England and the heat is on .
The early morning shifters ,all bleary eyed ,pass me by with their loud music pumping away on the car radio, just like yesterday.
Across the main road on the pelican crossing , nothing coming this morning ,so its down through the miner,s cottages where I get my second wind.
I feel alive, in control ,as I drive on , legs pumping piston like,smooth and regular - Im in the groove !
I head for the traffic lights where I garner mild interest from drivers in stationary vehicles sitting waiting for the change.
Past the pub , disgarded butt ends and empty glasses ,down the hill ,all yellow lines and vehicles parked illegally.
I'm half way home ,Im wet and getting wetter, I'm in the zone that only runners know - the wind in the face , glow on the cheek, mind free of all disturbance, my time with me , I deserve it !
On the grass now for the final mad dash.Facing the on coming traffic, past the mobile homes across the canal , I crank it up.
I dig deep , its in there somewhere. I find it !
All arms, elbows ,wet legs and sweat I'm finally home, and its stopped raining !
