Little runs

I did an easy 3km yesterday, and another little 4km today. I’m a fair weather runner. Grateful that despite my laziness I have kept enough fitness to knock out up to a 5km run whenever the sun is shining. Looking forward to the rain next week for my allotment though. I’ve muddled up my broccoli and cauliflower plants. Does anyone know how to tell the difference ?

Broccoli is green and cauliflower white. #JayHelps

That doesn't hold true for baby plants. They're all green..

Great runs but oh my, those poor little seedlings 🤣🤣🤣

Nice that you're enjoying the runs. As a fellow allotmenteer, I would say the seedlings with the leaves which are slightly crinkled are broccoli.

There’s always someone who knows the answer on this forum. Isn’t it great? 😂😂

Apparently broccoli “have two defined serrated lobes at the base of the leaves” they would look lovely together in the same row though, as long as they were socially distanced of course.

Lovely runs by the way. 😊

Mmm I love a broccoli and cauliflower bake with cheese sauce - I’d say just plant them how they come and see what happens.

Great running baddie.

Nice runs Baddie! Hard to believe we are hoping for rain for our gardens/allotments after such a wet winter doesn’t it? I’m with Dexy5 on this one. Just plant them and see how they grow 😃

Love the casual runs, can't help with veg beyond jay's helpful comment 😂

No allotment, but I've got veg seeds in a propagator and I have no idea what I'm doing! Also the sides of my raised bed collapsed and we haven't got the wood to replace them. So it's now an unraised bed.

Pallet tops. Ask around local businesses once we're let out again...

grumpyoldgirl in reply toBaddieThePirate

Thank you baddie. We'll do that. In the meantime, Mr grumpy is scavenging through the pile of "might come in useful" behind the shed and has just this second emerged with a couple of bits of old wood that will hopefully last a couple of months 🤞

I’ve got quite a few beds made of those. My faves are Link-a-bord, which I obtained locally from the maker. I don’t think they’re still going now though since the owner died

misswobble profile image

Me too! 😩. Oh well, never mind.

grumpyoldgirl profile image

Oh dear, unraised bed everywhere! 😂

misswobble profile image
misswobbleGraduate10 in reply togrumpyoldgirl

I’ve got some timber ones at home that are rotting as well 😩. Even the scaffolding plank ones that I bought from new. The link-a-Bord ones are fine

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply tomisswobble

The irony. We'll have our own little raised bed support group shall we? Mine isn't in the best place, but I can't persuade Mr grumpy to let me encroach any further with my attempts at growing my own. Might have to sneak a courgette plant into the main border though.

What sort of broccoli seedlings are they? Purple sprouting or a different type? Well done you, most of my seeds haven't been sown yet! Too many other tasks. Hopefully today will be the big seed sowing day. My cauliflowers last year were next to useless, but we are still eating the purple sprouting broccoli which always seems to do well. 😊 Sorry, can't help with identifying your seedlings. Glad your fitness is holding up. 🏃‍♀️🌸😊🥦

Google, TouTube and the cheeky lad on Project Diaries. I also have 2 gardening books. Next up is practice and trial and error.

I love that project diaries! I'm also learning as I go along, and trying out lots of different seeds. Keeping fingers crossed.

Although I spend hours in the gardening, it’s my other passion, I don’t grow veg, so I can’t help. I know from flower seedlings that I have to wait a bit before the leaves take proper shape. I have somethings growing in pots that I have no idea what they are. I normally put labels on everything but obviously not this time 🙄 but it’s fun just waiting for them to grow and see what they are.

Yours all look the same to me, perhaps they’re too small to see a significant difference yet. misswobble will probably know, she’s always growing things 🙂

Well done on the runs 🏃‍♀️🙂

“True” leaves come after the seed leaves. We transplant our seedlings once we’ve got “true” leaves. Very carefully 😃

I love growing from seed it never fails to please me when I see emerging seedlings 🤗🤗🤗 🌱. I’ve got some tricky ones (cd be old seed) so I’ve tried a second time on damp kitchen paper. I used to use a lidded tobacco tin for the job but OH has taken it for his drill bits ☹️

I sowed courgettes yesterday. OH said, “oh goodie” 😁😁

Well done Baddie! Yep I agree, run whenever you feel like it, for however long you fancy. That’s me in a nutshell 🥜

As for your seedlings dilemma - no clue (except I’ll happily demolish both in any form.) 😋

Labelling is so important. Mind you the blackbirds make a mockery of our labels and toss them around with gay abandon. Damn their eyes 😖😤😁

If you surround veg beds with manure the blackbirds love it and tip it about, taking your young plants with it Which is why I do spares 😁

Not been to my plot for ages as I have no car. Hopefully I will have shortly. I am hoping my stuff there will be secure but we have a kleptomaniac near me so I fear the worst.

BaddieThePirate profile image
BaddieThePirateGraduate10 in reply tomisswobble

I have the label. I germinated both in the same tray, then transplanted and put 4 in a pot of one, and three to a pot of the other (I was short of pots), but failed to remember which number was which plant, even though I tried really hard. It's mr memory that's going. Weirdly I can't wait for rain coz my clay soil is rock hard currently. Usually I'm waiting for sun so I can run. At least this way I should be happy either weather 😀

It still amazes me, and coz I haven't done it regularly it is hard every time. Improves if you practice. Good luck with your return to C25K.
