Bridge to 10K - it’s been emotional

So it’s been a while since I last posted, a little over 2 weeks in fact and sorry this is going to be a long one. I’d just done a 9K run, and it should have been my last long run before my first 10K which should have been yesterday.

Despite my triumphant post at having run 9K I spent the rest of the day so exhausted that when I hit my elbow on the door handle trying to fold some washing I burst into tears. It’s sounds ridiculous now but physically and mentally I was drained by that run, what with storm Dennis making it twice as hard. I made the decision at that point to rest and do shorter runs until my race.

Now fast forward to last Monday and my 10K race gets postponed to April 5th. I was so deflated as I felt like I’d done the hard work to get there, and I was worried about when and how I’d motivate myself to do any more long runs after my last one.

Well today I did it. 10K. I wasn’t intending to, just went out with my social runners group after work and with the encouragement of one of my buddies got it done. Whilst I feel amazing having done it, I just wanted to say this has not been a walk in the park and to anyone that’s struggling you are not alone! But most importantly you will get there!

Congratulations on reaching and running 10k. 🥳🥳

I was also exhausted when I did my first 10k , it does get better. You're right ' it's no walk in the park' but nothing worthwhile ever is.

Good luck with your 10k event 😊

Thank you so much for all the support and encouragement! I definitely think I’ll be hovering this side of the bridge for a bit and trying to consolidate 😊

You've given hope to many by writing this post. Congratulations on a fantastic achievement.

Thank you, I wanted to honour the whole journey, the good the bad and the ugly parts! Sometimes when you’re struggling it seems like everyone else if doing it easily! But as buddy says nothing worth doing is ever easy 😊

That’s an achievement running 10k, can be exhausting though training and always hoping for a good longer run

It’s great to see how well you are doing

Yes it is, I ran a lovely 6k in wind and rain last week and it just felt right, i felt i could have gone on and on but had already ran past home twice so stopped the weather was awful so only went out intending to have a really short run

Massive congratulations a great achievement. Your friends helped you beat the demons and had faith in your abilities. You have now shown you can do 10k once so when you are ready you can do it again. Happy running

I'm doing the time based Magic 10 plan at the moment, my long run is on a Saturday morning and it really wipes me out for the rest of the day so I really know how you feel. The first time I thought I was just imagining it but it happens all the time now. I'm seriously thinking of moving it to the evening and then hopefully sleeping it off, not too happy about messing with Saturday evenings but it's difficult to do it at any other time.

Big congratulations though, It really is a massive achievement that statistically most people will never get to.

Yes that’s exactly how I was feeling. Weirdly I don’t feel as exhausted having done it in the evening, but I think it’s just because I know I can go to sleep soon! I did want to eat my own body weight in pasta though . . . 😂

10k. Wow! You’re fab! Thank you for such an honest and encouraging post. I find running a mental challenge and I’m only 2 months post C25K, but I don’t feel confident. I find it encouraging to read that despite the toughness, you have achieved something amazing. Well done!

I do find running with others helps with the mental challenge a bit, if you’re chatting away to people you can sometimes forget how long you’ve been running!
