Migraines: update

Thanks to everyone that replied to my message yesterday. I took on board lots of your tips and advice, including the words of wisdom from my GP and I tried a short ‘slow and steady’ run with no expectations. Thought I’d aim for about 3k, ended up doing 4.5k. It’s been nearly an hour since I got home and so far, no migraine! Hurray! They normally start about 30 minutes after I get home so it’s looking promising 😊

If anyone’s interested, this is what I did to help: I’ve been ensuring I drink 2000ml + of water everyday for the past 2 days, I forced myself to eat half a banana before going this morning (I can’t stand bananas) and when I got back I drank a strong squash with salt in it. Seems to have helped 👍🏼

Good result for you Rhedeg2019. If all that works for you then it's great. Good luck 🤞🤞

in reply to Buddy34

Thank you Buddy. So far so good, so fingers crossed! I know you’re an advocate for drinking lots, but I’m dreadful for it. No more though 😊

I'm sure if you keep up with what you are doing it will work 😊

Excellent news. I hate bananas too, but now I always eat one as preparation for a run. 👍

Brilliant, hope this is the end of migraines. I was thinking of you as I ran today and thought starting nice and slow - perfect, turns out one of my fastest k's 🤣

in reply to Grannyhugs

Thanks for thinking of me Grannytobe! I’m glad I helped you get some way to your fast run 😆

If you hate bananas why not try making a smoothie with one and having a few sips before you go out? My tried and tested recipe: a banana, cup of frozen/fresh fruit, cup of apple juice few spoonfuls of natural yoghurt. 🍌🍌🍓🍓. Nice wee pick me up when you get in also. Glad to hear no migrane.

in reply to Leosmit

Good point. I’ve already told the husband that we need a smoothie maker. Thanks for the recipe ☺️

I treated myself to a Breville Blend Active about a year ago. You blend the smoothie in the cup (you get two cups with travel lids) and drink it.

I have a banana milkshake after my runs - just milk, banana and sometimes a spoonful of nutella, peanut butter or cinnamon if the banana is not quite ripe enough to be really tasty.

I also use the blender to beat eggs and to make breadcrumbs because it always sits on the worktop so saves getting out my big blender.

I have tried different plant milks but don't particularly like soya, almond or coconut but I love Oatley. It makes the milkshake really creamy without any other ingredients. It is nice on my muesli as well. Even in tea it was nice.

I meant to say that the breville was under £20

Ooooooo lovely! Thank you 😊

Hi rhedeg 2019 I’m sorry to hear about migraines . No I don’t suffer after a run but a couple of years ago I started getting bad headaches after never having headaches before! Long story short various trips to Dr’s - prescribed a low dose anti depressant which I tried ( not hapoy with tablet taking but was gonna try anything) nothing was working so she suggested an mri scan . My husband offered to speed up process and said let’s have it done privately. Results clear! Phew. A friend suggested a physiotherapist . She diagnosed a worn vertabrae in my neck and I now regularly go for private physio regularly and no more headaches! So maybe that’s worth looking at ?

in reply to Sammy-Lou

Thanks Sammy-Lou. Definitely worth considering x

Great news, I also get migraines from being dehydrated and have to make sure I regularly drink enough fluids also I have to focus on my posture and remind myself to relax my neck and shoulders whilst running.

in reply to Saxart

Good idea 👍🏼 Thanks

Great news! I developed the same pattern of post-run migraines last summer.

Isotonic drinks helped a bit but now I just have gallons of water through the day then a banana as soon as I get back.

This seems to be working for me too although I seem to spend my day either swigging water or going to the loo!

in reply to Sarararara

Haha yes... the side affects of glugging water all day is not fun 😂

If you don't like bananas, try a couple of medjool dates :)

in reply to Jogunlikely

Oh I’ve not heard of those before. I’ll look into it, thank you 😊
