Wormwood Scrubs parkrun - No.15 - Run!

In the shadow of the famous prison, I did my 15th different parkrun. Unfortunately, I wish there had been a bit less shadow, as the course was very muddy.

I find with tough courses my speed drops over time as my legs get tired. My heart rate also drops, so it’s more of a strength/endurance loss than cardio issue - my legs just run out of energy working through the mud. On flat dry paved courses, my heart rate stays high and my pace is consistent.

Very small, friendly group of runners. Basically a couple of laps around a big field completely on grass.

I realised returning to the car park near the prison, that it might not have been completely appropriate to wear a t-shirt with the single word Run! near such an establishment.

Let’s hope, in this case, no one took my advice. 😉

...your pace may drop but you will reap the benefits in getting stronger legs and better balance, so those easier runs will get faster too! I run regularly on trails and muddy winters are great for building up strength for the spring! Muddy running definately gets easier with practice, too. Look on it as training and don't worry to much about the time. 👍😀

Thanks. That is definitely the plan. Obviously I can’t help but be slightly disappointed if my pace is a little off or I find a run particularly tough. But don’t worry, I understand the context very well. I am aware that six months ago I was incapable of running 100 meters on a track without collapsing, let alone 5 km on mud! So I quickly remind myself of that and continue to enjoy the experience.

So thanks for the confirmation! I never mean to sound negative or put people off. I just want to share my adventures and if people learn a little or see that others have the same issues, then I am very happy.

You didn't come across as negative at all - I think we are all the same!🙂👍

Hahaha - I’m envisioning convicts scarpering across the field because you told them to! 😅

That was exactly my thought.

Well done on your 15th different parkrun. When your on mud it’s harder alright, I have a fear of slipping so go a little slower.

A good RUN for you today IAC, did you realise that there are prison 5K parkruns, they all take place within prison grounds, I think that they are officially recognised with the Vitality Parkrun people, if a prisoner does take part as a runner or volunteer at any reviews of his conduct at prison, then, who knows he could get out of prison a little earlier, however, prisoners cannot run at normal parkruns outside prison.
