No pain no gain - well I guess so?

Feel fine when running but often suffering the day after - weird to me as I always do the stretch/warm up etc and run at what I feel is a comfortable pace with no problems there and then.

Anyway finally got round to looking it up and hooray - all good! Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) apparently - nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/p...

'The soreness is part of an adaptation process that leads to greater stamina and strength as the muscles recover and build.

Muscle soreness that shows up a day or two after exercising can affect anyone, regardless of your fitness level.

This type of muscle stiffness or achiness is normal, doesn't last long, and is actually a sign of your improving fitness.

You can exercise with DOMS, although it may feel uncomfortable to begin with. The soreness should go away once your muscles have warmed up.

The soreness will mostly likely return after exercising once your muscles have cooled down.

The next time you perform the same activity or exercise at the same intensity, there'll be less muscle tissue damage, less soreness, and a faster recovery.

After reading that it almost makes me wish I had more! ...well maybe not but it does feel to good that some good is coming from those hobbly moments and, I guess lends truth to the old saying if there's no pain there's no gain?

Well done you, ah you've found out about delayed pain😉 generally aches stretch and work out whereas a pain needs rest and may need intervention. Mentally there can be a fine line between the two depending on how brave you are feeling.

You shouldn’t be having pain regularly, perhaps in the beginning when we start C25K and then if we build up too quickly after graduation which many of us have done 😕 (me included 🙄)

Make sure you’re not running too fast, that you’re warmed up and stretch afterwards. I sometimes take an extra rest day if I feel my body needs it. My aches and pains will appear two days afterwards, not the next day but I guess everyone is different.

Thanks for that - sound like a kindered spirit - I think the frustrating thing is when you get these aches and pains after when you were running and everything felt ok - what can you do? you cant slow down when you feel ok just on the off chance that you may be going too fast?!

Anyway nothing too bad at the moment - in the past I used to play squash and not stretch - result I could barely get up and down stairs afterwards then one day had an epiphany and never looked back - always very sensible these days - in fact I think sometimes I overstretch!

Tomorrow an easy 3k so hopefully nothing to worry about fingers crossed!

Not sure you can overstretch, well as long as you are looking after yourself! I have learned the hard way that I need to do lots of stretching and I also find that a yoga class once a week and a Pilates class too really helps with keeping aches and pains at bay. And I have also learned to take an extra day if I am having twinges which seems to help. Also the longer I have been running (ten months now but still slow as a snail) the less trouble I have with aches and stiffness so I am hoping that means I am doing something right!
