Where have I been?

Mainly in bed.

Just before my first attempt at a 5k run, I caught a rather nasty virus. Something I ate? Something I breathed? Something that ate me? No one knows. But a trip to A&E and a week in bed later, I am just about over it.

I’ve been out of my running shoes for two solid weeks now; longest break since I started. So I’m going to ease back into it. Start with something like 2km and build back up over a couple of weeks. This heat doesn’t help, so I may aim for some really early starts.

Anyway, that’s my update.

Run safe and stay cool.

Oh dear, sad story! Hate those mystery viruses & glad you fought it off. Do take it easy as you start back - viruses can leave your whole system knocked back. Take care, and have a smooth comeback. 👍😊

Thanks. Running is still a really new part of my life, and recovery is one aspect I guess I need to learn my way through as much as running shoes and pacing.

I am grateful for any and all advice I can get.

Just take it easy & don’t push yourself for a while. Bit of a “keep ticking over” mind-set is safer in the long run. (Ooops, puns lurk round every corner in this running malarkey. 😄)

Oh no! Illness always seems worse in hot weather. Glad you’re on the mend, but do take care of yourself. Xx

Thanks. The heat is certainly not encouraging me outside. I will take it easy, but also look forward to that high you get after a nice run.

Take it easy, a slow steady start back is always good . . . perhaps best after the heat has subsided a bit?, the good thing (for us runners) being in the UK the hot weather never lasts that long 😊

So sorry to hear you haven’t been well. Make sure you come back super slowly, especially in this weather. You’ll be fine I’m sure, but you want to make it enjoyable and safe too. Glad you’re out of bed. Happy running! 👍

Not much to add - hope you're back to full health, I took a week off due to something or other reaction to an insect bite - I was soooo tired lol

I did a 2k run the first day back but it exhausted me, but then the second time I tried I seemed to be back to full strength - hope you get back to it easily!

Great to hear. Mine could even have been an insect bite as well. I am also pretty tired, and seem to doze off at random times. I'm sure I will ease back into the runs, as I know I can do it.

Hope you’re feeling better soon. You could use the time and rest to watch Running videos read running books and do some prep before you’re ready to come back, Win win

Wondered what you were doing Charlie. That was some virus to take you to A and E! I've just taken a week out after a hand op, thought the sling would mess up my natural gazelle running style 🤣🤣, (more like one shot by poachers and on its way out) .

There are so many more people who are better able to advise than me, but I tried a "quick" half hour last night at 9pm and struggled all the way. Walked twice just to get through it and was sweating more than Red Rum in the winners enclosure 🥵🥵. If my experience is anything to go by, in the words of the late great Barry White "take it real slow" especially in this heat, in Salisbury it was still 27C when I ran. Hope you get back to form soon. 🙋‍♀️🏇

Today is not the day for a comeback. It’s already 30C at 9am here, and is forecast to reach 38C by 4pm. And it won’t be below 20C at all tonight.

Luckily I have only had to visit A&E twice for myself. Both this year. I think my warranty has expired. This virus was no cold!

I will do some work on the exercise bike this week to get the joints moving again, and see how next week goes.

I hope your hand improves and you can return to those gazelle-like strides.

Welcome back, I know you don’t lose running fitness when not running for 2 weeks. But illness is a different matter so you are right to take it easy to begin with, and maybe wait for the cooler days. Glad you’re feeling better.
