After my week of insect bite imposed rest I got back on the treadmill and only just managed 2k : (

I think I forgot how to run.

I did my warm up, and I ran slowly, well within my normal running speed.

I feel like I lost 3 months fitness😥 It was awful.

😩 I am sure your body is just adjusting. If you were bitten that probably took it out of you. And two k is still good x

You won’t have forgotten, and 2k is 2k, if you’ve been feeling off colour perhaps it will take a couple of runs to get back to your normal pace.

I feel ok, I am hydrated and I feel fine in myself, but my legs felt really heavy, my calves started to tighten, everything just felt off.

Just take care xx

You haven't lost your fitness, sounds like your body is fighting something; fatigue, illness. It doesn't take much to affect your running. Just take it steady, rest more if you have to, maybe get it checked out. That bite did look nasty, and I don't like the sound of it making you tired.

The bite has all but gone now, just a faint bruise-like mark.

Probably just tiredness I guess.

It is just depressing lol, I was really happy with how it was going.

So much sympathy. I sort of thought I was OK to run on Monday and it was a big mistake. Like you I felt all wrong and only managed 2k before abandoning at 25 minutes. It took me 15 minutes just to do the first km and the second one (a flat then easy downhill which I usually love flying along) felt like running through treacle. My own stupid fault for rushing to get back out there. I know it is not a loss of fitness in my case because of my new pb at Parkrun on Saturday! I doubt it is for you either. It might not be anything to do with the insect bite but please get checked out because something is draining you. Could be bite, could be anaemia, could be nothing but it would be silly to ignore. Says the hypocrite who hates going to the docs...

Thanks debs, how is your hip ?

If it doesn't improve by Saturday I will ask for a blood test I think. I ate some meat tonight and some kidney beans (I'm not vegetarian but I eat meat rarely and not in big quantities). Hopefully that will do the trick.

Fingers firmly crossed that it does. Someone else on here recently said that they had been given iron pills for the anaemia they didn't know they had and it was almost instant energy burst. Hip is still a bit rubbish but had a good walk earlier in the woods round my usual running route and it felt a lot better after. And I've bought myself a new running book to cheer myself up while on the Injury Couch. It's called The Art of Running Faster! 😂 I WILL be a gazelle!

Yes, I just read that post. I have suffered from anaemia in the past. Ended up on iron perfusions (narrowly missed a blood transfusion) after my first son was born. I took my iron tablets religiously throughout the pregnancy too. But that's been stable for the last few years. I will ask for a blood test to be safe.

Fab, good idea, if only to rule it out.

Do let us know how the book is, I love reading

Born To Run is a great book, very inspiring and some really interesting stuff in there. goodreads.com/book/show/628...

Thanks, I will check it out. Jaojao's book post inspired me to read Flanagan's Run again (fiction but a good read). I just finished it. So I will look at born to run.

I'm reading that one too! And wondering if I am brave enough to try barefoot running! Hope you're doing OK clubberlang, I am looking forward to a full race report...

in reply to Debston

I'm good! Thanks Debs... Getting a bit nervous about the race on Sunday, just looking at train times, baggage drop-off, starting pens, where to meet people... 😬

That is very sensible - get all the organising type stuff done in advance, so no last minute panicking. Leaving you free to daydream about breasting that winning line tape... Aw, I'd be nervous too but you know you'll be fine as soon as you start. I'm ridiculously excited for it! (No pressure!) :)

It only arrived today but it's great so far. Have just been reading the section on injuries...

No way have you forgotten how to run! You are still recovering and it may take a few days before you feel like you’re back where you should be. But rest assured that all that fitness does not and cannot simply vanish.

Don’t dwell on this one. Just try again in a couple of days and keep trying until you feel on top of things again. You will be back at it before you know it.

Sounds like your body is fighting off something. We have all had treacle days. Be kind to yourself!

Short runs are fine, I’m becoming an adept! Try the 10’ run on Nrc, the one mile one or even better the Comeback run, the run when you come back after an absence. You’ve got this

If you are taking an iron supplement don't have any orange juice with it or after for at least 30mins. I was told this when I got anaemic after having the Grizzler and fainted in the maternity ward, apparently it affects the absorption. I just wanted it to take the taste away. Sounds like the bite gave you a bad reaction, sometimes it takes more out of you than you think. At least you're trying to get out there, that's what counts, good for you 😷😢 = 💉🍵💊😓

I was told to take iron and vitamin C together but cut back on tea and coffee when I was anaemic. Git C increases absorption of iron into the blood. 🤷‍♀️ Very confusing

backintimeGraduate10 in reply to LittleNell83

Yes, I was given iron and vitamin c tablets when I left the hospital

In regards to the tiredness, your body is probably recovering from the bite. I am just on my last day of a week of antibiotics from a bite last week and my energy levels have dropped.

Take it easy and you will recover. Plus don't underestimate the effects of the weather on your body. The heat knackers me

Yikes BIT, somehow I missed your previous post (how - I’m always on here? 😳) so I looked it up and that bite looked nasty. 😖

Are you any closer to knowing what it was?

My first reaction was a tick bite too - the halo worried me a bit. Or maybe an infected horsefly? I got infested by the latter last summer in Munich, but they itched and oozed (nice) rather than were painful, and I didn’t feel fatigued. I don’t have any experience of spider bites (oh crikey, the thought .... 😩😩).

Hope you get sorted. I agree that a blood test would be a good idea. Keep us posted won’t you? ❤️

Yes I didn’t see the previous post either. I’ve had that with mosquito bites, not the standard mozzie another one, and have also had with a spider bite but that one hurts like hell. The bite for both was large, hard and hot most of the time. I think I used antihistamines pill and cream for both. Is it getting better?

backintime profile image
backintimeGraduate10 in reply to Couchpotato2

It just looks like a bruise now, no longer red or hot

Are u feeling better?

Can I suggest you show the original photo of your bite to your GP in case it was a tick? Ticks can leave a reaction described as a bullseye rash and you have blood tests. Happened to my husband.

Do check that bite out if it continues backintime. Are you hydrated enough? Even without running it has been so hot and it’s amazing how much fluids we lose just sleeping. Hope your next run is better. 🏃‍♀️👏👏
