Try keeping your cadence/step rate the same but shorten your steps. To start with you will feel like you are shuffling or taking dolly steps, but it will slow you right down.

What is your heart rate like?

I struggle with it. I went out to do 10k on Sunday and 2.5 miles in I was heading for a 5k PB, so I aborted the run, I didn’t want to hurt myself. So after that tempo run, today I dialled up a Nike guided long run and checked how far I’d gone at the hour mark... I seem to only be able to slow down with a coach in my ears reminding me to keep the effort down. As above, a lot of it is stride length, my cadence was pretty much the same in both runs judging by my music.

I have no problems with my pace - my natural pace is slow and steady. I personally don’t enjoy feeling uncomfortable if I can help it, so dialling my pace right back until I feel good really helps me keep running for as long as necessary. Obviously if I’m doing intervals or going for a PB or something, I have to make exceptions!

Are you finding yourself out of breath and struggling? Maybe you find a song which matches your chosen bpm and make a playlist with similar songs? Good luck. 😀

I found it hard to begin with. The hardest thing was starting slow. For a long time I settled for running the first k at whatever pace felt comfortable and natural and then consciously slowing down at the 1k mark. It’s better than nothing and does let you run further as over the second k as you run slower you are actually recovering from the faster first k. Over time I got used to the slower pace and eventually found I could actually start at that pace.

It's hard to maintain that easy conversational pace without someone to talk to. If I think I'm getting too quick I just close my mouth. Breath in and out nose only. Not all the time, just until I get back to a steady pace. Trust me it will slow you down. (Bit dodgy if you've got a cold though!)

Update.... did a short 3k listened to a podcast which I found I was jus in my own little bubble no rush jus jogging along. I’ve got to remember there’s no competition or rush.
