Anyone else taking part in the 5k at the Edinburgh Marathon Festival in May? I’m going to use their ‘intermediate’ training plan, which is an eight week plan so starting at the end of this month, with some variations to include other things I want to do in that time but treating the EMF 5k as the ‘goal race’. Just wondered if anyone else is doing something similar? Or if anyone has experience of using a training plan provided by an event they are training for?

Hello Arthur, I’m going to EMF, I will be doing the half marathon.....😱🏃‍♀️, I’ve heard it’s all down hill, so if I get tired I can always curl myself into a ball and roll my way down 😂

I’ve never followed an actual events plan, I have followed an Asics plan for half marathon based on my estimated/target finishing time - these used to be free, I don’t think you can get them anymore.

Whenever I’ve looked at event plans, they seem a bit full on, I run twice a week, and have just adapted the plan to my schedule- the key thing I’ve found is getting the mileage in - however if your aim is more speed then that type of work should feature more in your plan. I’d advise look at a few plans and just find, it adjust one you like to suit you, like the C25K plan really.

In addition I tend to go for the ‘beginners’ plans, as I’m highly unlikely to trouble the likes of Mo Farah anytime soon.....😂🏃‍♀️

Hope you find something that suits

Oh I decided a while back to use the plan on the EMF website. Intermediate because at 5k the beginners plan is for people who are just starting to run to get them to their first 5k and C25k has taken me to that point already. I think the half starts downhill and is mostly flat after that: the same can’t be said of the 5k unfortunately as it’s basically a lap of Arthur’s Seat so there’s a bit of a climb in the first 2k - but a lot of downhill in the final 2k.

I’ve already tried some of the interval and hill rep sessions from the first two weeks even though the plan isn’t due to start for another couple of weeks, so I think it’s achievable. PB is probably too much to hope for though due to the uphill bit: my usual parkrun is Montrose which is seriously flat.
