There’s No Escape: The Ultimate in Faffage

Mr Raz and I are spending the weekend at his sister and brother-in-law’s In Hinderwell on the North Yorkshire coast, and of course my running kit was the first thing to be packed.

After a fairly raucous evening I had enough presence of mind to get everything ready for the morning so that I could sneak out early for a run without waking Mr R. At 6.30 I was awake and raring to go, kitted out in record time and without disturbing the slumbers of my very own Sleeping Beauty (ok maybe the consumption of one or two beverages 🍷 🥂 meant that he was more sleeping and less beauty).

I crept down the stairs on tip toe and realised that, unlike in my house where the front door can be opened without a key, there were two locked doors between me and my potential run. After a few minutes of scrabbling around I eventually located a key and managed to unlock the first door to the porch. But the front door stood proudly in my way, the lock refusing to budge. I looked around for another key, but all I found was a gremlin, whispering in my ear, “You’re locked in... held captive...! You might as well go back to bed and wait for your captor’s to wake up.”

Was I starting to develop Stockholm Syndrome?

No! Having avoided a hangover, and had a PB for the time to get togged up, I wasn’t going to let anything stop me from running. Maybe I could escape through the kitchen to the garden and then out. But I had forgotten to take into account the two dogs who stood guard not unlike Cerberus the three headed dog guarding the underworld (or Fluffy, the drooling three headed dog guarding the Philosopher’s Stone in Harry Potter).

Opening the door to the kitchen unleashed the full strength of their enthusiasm to see a possible provider of breakfast, but I managed to step through them and faced the back door. Also locked and with no key in sight. Time was ticking by and my Mojo was keen to get me out and running. The thought of crawling out through the dog flap crossed my mind, but as I crouched to look through it Rufus and Fergus thought this was some kind of show of affection, and decided to reciprocate by attempting to cover me in slobber.

Eventually I located the key for the back door hung on a magnet attached to the fridge , but the back garden gate was bolted and if I let myself out, I would also be allowing my slobbering canine acquaintances the same freedom I was wanting for myself. So I had two choices... give up and go back to bed, “Go on, you know you want to,” urged my gremlin. Or awaken the Sleeping Beauty and ask for his assistance. I decided on the latter course of action; awakening him with a Disney like kiss was not included in my escape plan, however he was soon awake and more like one of the 7 dwarves (Grumpy) than a Princess and obliging me in letting me out through the gate while holding back the dogs who misguidedly thought it was an opportunity for a free walk.

At last, after half an hour of faff, I had gained my freedom as was headed up towards the cliff and onto the Cleveland Way. It was blowing a gale and the path was muddy and slippery, so it was very slow going, especially as I didn’t want to risk being blown off the edge of the cliff. But the view down to Runswick Bay as the morning light brightened was magical.

Top marks for perseverance Razouski! I’m not sure I’d have been so successful, but then again if I’d taken care to avoid a hangover the previous evening, maybe I would! The sacrifice would need rewarding after all. 🍷 🏃‍♀️🥂

I’m glad you were able to get out. It sounds exhilarating. 😀

It certainly blew the cobwebs away. 🌬

👏👏👏👍😁 wonderful!! It's so tricky away from home at times. I'm pleased Sleeping Beauty was so helpful. My fiance is known as the King of faff so would have slowed me more I'm sure!!

I always find the hardest part of away running is the sticky aftermath when I would normally get everything in the wash asap...

Enjoy the views!! And the Northern air! 😉😁💛

Ooh I know what you mean... have a plastic bag with my muddy running kit in at the bottom of our suitcase...

Wow. The run must have felt like freedom after your escape from Alcatraz! Top marks for perseverance; and what a view as a prize!

Yes it was...

Nothing like the Cleveland way for great running! Well done for getting out there despite it all!

I’m hoping to come back in the summer so that I can run it with less mud and slipping.

Definitely a good plan- I like to run from Robin Hoods Bay, when we stay there. I think Runswick Bay to RHB and back is 10 miles, which I have walked many times but still too far for me to run....some day maybe. Enjoy your holiday!

We had a lovely walk round Runswick Bay this morning. I like the idea of running to RHB but might be a bit antisocial if I’m supposed to be spending time with the outlaws. 😀

Well done Raz and thanks for all the film references! The coastline looks stunning and well worth the effort. Are you running again today?

Not running today, but wish I was. It looks lovely out there.

What s fantastic place to visit, and to run! (Gales notwithstanding). Mr GOG is from that part of the world, I love it. Although it also means, pack an extra jumper 😁 Extra points scored for persuading Mr Raz to help you escape.

It is lovely here. Mr Raz was born and brought up in Redcar as was his sis, so for them it’s all really familiar, whereas I’m originally from the Isle of Wight.

A lovely part of North Yorkshire. Having two locked doors between us and the outside world is not unusual up here. Just part of the culture I think, which may go back to the days of Viking raids! If you had been here a week earlier you would have seen snow and sub zero temperatures, so your timing was good. Glad you managed to escape your captors and enjoy some of the scenery.😊

It was a fantastic start to the day. Later my sis-in-law drove us to Castle Howard and went for a long walk round the grounds, then drove to Rivaulx Abbey and this morning have had a lovely stroll along Runswick Bay before returning to sunny Luton. 😀

We live about 25 minutes away from Hinderwell, 5 minutes warm up walk from the forest and then the moors. We occasionally get some rough weather up here, but the views and countryside more than compensate. We are really lucky, apart from the Viking raids of course.😊

That was a lovely read Raz. And a tad exciting too 😮 I kept thinking, will she get out?" 😭 but I also thought "the things we do for a run" 🙂 Sounds and looks gorgeous.

It was worth all the faff, but another time I think I should check my escape route the night before - or even ask my hosts! 😀

smiling reading this, great post.. i could picture the scene. Im not sure Mr Deals would have been so helpfull! i think he'd of just turned over and gone back to sleep!

Looks like a lovely run too!! i love the sea, its just so calming.

well done

To be honest, Mr R was fairly reluctant, but he didn't really get much option. It was lovely running by the sea - I really love it and wish I got more opportunities to do so.

Ooo The Great Escape.... together with a hangover and dogs too. I am laughing away ... sorry. It is funny though 😂.

Razouski profile image

It was actually quite funny in hindsight, and at least I got out eventually. Apparently the key to the front door was the same as opened the inner door, but it sticks, or so my brother-in-law helpfully informed me later on when we were having breakfast. Well at least I'll know next time. :-)

Nothing was going to stop you going for that run was it Razouski? It looks so beautiful along the Cleveland Way. Well done for getting out during your weekend away. 🏃‍♀️👏👏

It was absolutely stunning and such a contrast to my normal runs (living landlocked Luton it's always lovely to get the chance to run by the coast).

Lovely place to run - I’ve walked there a few times ( before I was running). Loved the tale of determined escape. 😀😂

Haha...lovely story! The gremlin was never going to win when beautiful Yorkshire was waiting for you outside the door! Sound like the faffage was def worth it xxx

It was so worth it, but if I’d spent less time faffing I could have had more time to run 🏃🏾‍♀️. X

Sounds like a fire hazard to me. I’m sure you’ll have the key situation worked out next time. Beautiful scenery and 12/10 for your escape capabilities👍🏃‍♀️

Definitely will, next time (if I remember ;-) )

I'll also try and order some less windy weather so that I can run further without danger of plunging down the cliffside. 😂
