Something changed 10k

Quick recap. Worked up to 10k back in August. Found 8k fine, 10k really too much. Didn’t try anything as long until building back up to 10k last weekend for my Movember run due to bad weather forecast for this weekend.

So today my plan was to do another 10k, with a view to consolidating and before starting to stretch towards 12k and (hopefully) on towards HM.

Weather turned out much better than expected. Gremlins kicked in a few times but nothing major - at 1k there is the mixed elation of one done, nine to do!

I ran very late morning and should’ve eaten breakfast before or had a gel at around 6k because by 8k I knew I was lacking energy and my pace dropped a lot, so I went for the emergency jelly babies.

No drama, I was just starting to tire. Once the sugar from a jelly baby hit I was absolutely fine and kicked on for the final k.

Part way back I started to feel pain under my left arm. I was wearing my Under Armour removable sleeves and they were pinching very slightly and, over that distance, it became uncomfortable. Lesson learned, wear a proper long sleeve shirt for the longer runs.

Walking home on my cool down I ate the other three jelly babies and drank my water pouch and generally felt pretty amazing. It felt something like I remember feeling at 8k back in August, a sign that my fitness has improved a lot over that time.

I believe that was my 97th run since starting Couch to 5k, so next weekend sees me hit 100 runs.

Whatever run you have next, enjoy it x

Well done Jay, sounds like you got through it well with the help of your jelly baby friends!Sadly, some of them have to be sacrificed for the greater good from time to time. I like the green ones best 🙂👏

Yellow probably for me. Current pack is largely pink - strawberry?

David_G profile image
David_G in reply toJay66UK

Yes, they could well be strawberry. PS- I’ve just checked my combined C25K and Strava records. I’ve done 84 runs so not too far behind you on that either.🙂 Once my HM training schedule kicks in next week I reckon I’ll be up around the 100 run mark just before Christmas 🎄🤞

Good luck with it all 🏃‍♂️👏

Well done Jay, you’re on a roll and that’s great to hear! 🏃💪👏👍😀

I’m nicking your jelly baby idea. Nice and small and no doubt provide a good boost. 👍

Just be sure not to do what I did the first time I used them back in August. You need to nibble at them and swallow each a piece at a time. Throw a whole one in your dry mouth mid-run and suddenly you can’t breathe and choke.

I do stupid so you don’t have to!

Oh flip 😳 Thanks for the heads-up! Ok, nibbling it’ll be .... 👍

I did the stupid thing too! Glad the run went well!

Well done on another 10k Jay66uk. It sounds like those jelly babies came to the rescue. I bought some precisely for that purpose but I’m afraid once they got in that glass jar in the kitchen they didn’t make it out the house. I must try again because they sound perfect for the midrun boost.

Enjoy the 98-100 runs next week - that is really amazing. I need to start counting back!

🏃‍♂️👏👏

Thanks. I’m going towards a HM with my eyes wide open and realising it may be too far too soon for me, particularly as I’m still quite overweight. If I start to struggle I’m going to slow down the progress and not fret about it. But being fat is just advanced carb loading for long running 🤣

Next time someone looks at my belly when I say I run - I’m going to say that!!! Lmao! 🤣🤣

Well done getting back to 10k, Jay! You’re doing great! 👏🏻👏🏻😃🏃‍♂️💥❤️ I’m looking forward to the HM schedule starting...need to print out and practise the strength training links still though!

Sorry to hear those arm thingies pinch a bit. I just ordered a pair of ASICS ones to try in my “Black Friday” sale running goodies...

I’ve had no problems on shorter runs - I think nearly and hour and a half of wearing them (when you include warm up/down and pre/post run faff) was too much. They are brilliant for making favourite short sleeved shirts useable in more seasons.

HM is definitely a step too far for me, hence next year’s 10 mile / 16k Great South is my sensible 🙄 chosen long range target, though I hope to get up to 20 slow Ks in training.

Great 10k today 👍

Brilliant Jay66UK . It's so great you've kept track of your runs as well. With all the app skipping I have absolutely no idea how many I've done! I also did 10k then not again until a few months later. Really took it out of me. Hopefully I can follow in your footsteps and make them more of a regular occurrence. Happy running 😊
