Quandary Running, RED T-Shirt, a podiatrist and a rest!

Last night my RED January T-shirt arrived, and as previously advised I haven’t run properly for about a month due to a foot issue, and the few weeks before that were spent procrastinating about whether or not I should run as I knew my foot would hurt...... The rest period seems to have made a difference and as the new top arrived and I had new shoes to try, i guilted myself into a short run.

Surprisingly it wasn’t as hard as I expected and managed to keep a respectable pace - you really don’t lose fitness that fast!. I used Nike Run Club for the 1st time as I’m interested in the different types of guided runs on offer, but I couldn’t get it to link to Strava!! Found an app to manage the syncing, but it shouldn’t be that hard, surely!

Anyway - I ran the whole time with only a brief pause at half way to stretch my calves. Breathing was in control and muscles not complaining too much this morning.

The foot feels like it has some kind of bruise memory. There is no pain, but I’m always aware of it. I could feel it starting to grumble at 3k but as I was only planning on 3-3.5k i just carried on.....

I mainly went out as I need to keep some miles in my feet for doing the 5k everyday in Jan and I’m itching to start the HM training (I really really need a goal to train for). I also need to re-create the issue, if it’s still there, for when I see the podiatrist on 6th Dec.

For now, happy with the result. Will increase distance (5k) later in week and monitor foot situation.

Happy running all! 💕👍

Good run.

Nike don’t data share and keep closing the loopholes some of the syncing apps use, but on the plus side they don’t sell your data either 😂. You can run Strava all silent in the background if you need to.

Good to see you're finding a way back to what you obviously love. Feet willing.

What is Red January please??

Hi - RED January is underpinned by the charity "Mind". RED stands for Run Every Day. The aim being that you are active everyday in January to help beat the post Christmas / winter blues. See link below for more information.

well done, and really exciting doing RED January. Thats very ambitious to be doing 5k a day. Have you ensured you have built up to that to prevent injury?

That's really part of the reason why I'm starting again now. I seeing the 'Foot' man in two weeks time, so hopefully he will offer some sage advice to get me quickly back to 10k and onto the HM plan...… Alternatively, he may advise hanging up my laces for a few months!

My current plan is to run 3-5k three times this week and next to see what happens in my right foot. I'm keeping a daily foot dairy to capture my thoughts etc so I can give something constructive in the appointment.

I am relieved to hear its not all 5k's. I run everyday and I do at least 3 or 4 1 or 1.5 mile runs in the week. That way I keep the injury wolf from the door.

I’d not realised RED January had to be running everyday. If it’s supposed to be being active, wouldn’t you have a better chance of avoiding injury (foot or other) by cross training on alternate days Mitch?

Don’t want you on the IC before we get going with this HM plan! 😳❤️❤️

Hey MD - In terms of RED - it does indicate that it’s 5k everyday, but in other places it says be active.... so you can cross train / swim or walk as well I believe.

As far as HM goes, it’s dependent on the foot doctor and what he says. I thought I’d have more discomfort today after running last night but I haven’t! At the end of the day, I’ll follow his advice, but I’m hoping it was just something inflamed and I’ll need to spend some specific “warm up” time on that foot..... anything else might need more time out....

After my ankle & knee, in the last 2 years, the last place I want to be is the IC lol..... going to aim for 5k tomorrow and see what happens 🤞

Good luck - sounds like a sensible plan 🤞🤞❤️

Hi Mitch, sorry to hear you've been struck by the running gremlins! But I know that you've totally got the drive to get back on it. If your bashing out 3k on your first run back then you've certainly got it. My recent recovery from injury was a real test in patience but allowed me to get used to setting goals that were incremental but sustainable without injury. Anyway, your messages of positivity were a great support to me when I was injured... So I'm sure you'll get plenty of support from me and others on here. Even if you don't need it! All the best Mitch!

Kev mate! How’s it all hanging for you?

Yeah hopefully my rest, slow restart and a visit to the foot chap will all yield the required result!

Thanks for the message (when are jumping on the 10k plan??? Lol)

I've only just regraduated on Friday by knocking out 5k in 28:30. Haven't run outside once so really taking it easy on the knee this time around. I'm relying on anaerobic pigheadedness at the moment so am going to do more aerobic work then maybe work on my speed over the next few weeks before increasing distances. If I don't push too hard I hope to start the 10k plan soon but have a busy few weeks before and during Xmas so maybe stick with incremental improvements till the new year. Certainly won't be able to run every day, but will be looking to extend beyond 5k as I totally have caught the bug. Might couple it with a beer free month to lose some weight!

Anyway good luck with the foot chappy, but you won't need it. I am pretty sure you'd still be running on a peg-leg! 🤣

Ha ha!

Sub 30 for 5k mate!!! Wow! That’s proper big boy running that is!! My PB so far (parkrun) is 34.59 - if we ever run together, remember to put the tea on when you finish, I’ll be along in a few mins!! Lol
