Another frosty one....and I loved every minute. Am I losing my mind?!?

I was supposed to run 10k tomorrow but the forecast is calling for extremely high winds. Tonight was cold, but calm, so off I went, donning my lovely winter running kit. I kept it nice and slow to start to allow my body to warm up and to just enjoy the run. I had my Chillin' playlist playing again and as I entered the last third of my run, some Christian rock came on followed by some 90's country hits that spurred me on to push the pace to a tempo pace. My watch was dead so I ran based on feel and I felt great! I ended up running my third fastest 10k, on one of my coldest runs! I was frosty, with my eyelashes freezing to each other making blinking more challenging than the run but I wouldn't change a thing.....except maybe I'll wear my merino long underwear under my winter running trousers when it's this cold. My tushy and upper thighs were a little red and I had a reaction to the cold that I haven't had in years where I break out in hives on the red areas. So I've taken some Benadryl and all seems to be returning to normal. I start a long stretch of on-call tomorrow so won't be able to run until next week 😒. Oh well, let my recovery week begin. Before I know it, I'll be back out, tackling whatever Mother Nature throws my way.

It looks like next week we're warming up again 🀞. It may be a mixed bag of weather this winter again.

Something about runners! Rain, snow, extreme heat, extreme cold.... nothing will stop us. We're like postal workers ( well maybe not in Canada right now; they're on rotating strikes across the country)

Running is such an important part of keeping me a happier person, so I do what I gotta do. These temperatures makes it a lot harder to get out but once I do, I still get the same happy feelings 😊

It is a really weird feeling, that's for sure.! This time I didn't feel my nose hairs freezing - I had my buff in just the right spot.

Ooh sounds fab! I don't think I'll ever say it's cold here ever again 😳

I get a rash from overheating which is probably not what caused your reaction!

Enjoy your recovery week πŸ™‚

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to Irishprincess

I think the rash occurs from the extreme temperature change. I was really good on my run, but as soon as I came inside, I could feel the sweat just pouring. To go from extreme vasoconstriction to massive dilation might've caused some histamine release is those regions. I have such sensitive skin on a normal day. I've had it occurring on the ski hill too. All is well again though. I'll be curious to see if the merino long underwear makes it better or worse.

Wowee Sask! That's what I call determination!! -18Β°!! Where do you live?? Makes our bit of wind and rain down South seem positively balmy! Well run πŸ’ͺπŸ˜πŸƒ

I'm in Saskatchewan in Canada. We're known for our cold winters....but it's a "dry" cold at least πŸ˜†. I remember the last time I went home to visit my mom on the west coast in winter. It was right around zero and I couldn't warm up. Maybe I'm tougher now but the humidity seems to play a role. You go through a lot of lotion trying to maintain healthy skin, but if you layer up, you can go out in anything!

Yes humidity makes it feel worse I think. But still, big kudos to you!

Feels like -26!! Yikes!

Funny thing though, my last run was -12 and felt like -20 but I was less cold on the start of this run. One extra layer on the bottom half and running with my hands in a fist inside my gloves for the first km made a huge difference. I definitely overdressed on the top half again since I wasn't cold at all at the beginning. I have to trust to only wear a single thin layer under my awesome winter running jacket but it is still a tough concept for me to grasp with these temperatures.

Well done Allie, fab splits and a flourish to finish... Awesome 10k run. Your proper winter wear is working out great in those crazy freezing temps.❄❄❄

Solutions not problems for you!βœ‹πŸ‘

Rest up during your Recovery week, your body is working hard.😚xxx

The running gods did well with your playlist againπŸ˜‰....

The Running Gods of Shuffle were on their game again! I made this playlist months ago while I was doing housework and didn't really chose songs based on running moreso just songs that made me happy. I sure am enjoying it on these runs. It is quite an eclectic mix πŸ™‚

A chilly one for sure. I’m planning a run tomorrow, a windchill of -11 is forecast. Downright balmy I hear you say!

Good luck on your run tomorrow! The wind can make all the difference. We're warmer today but with winds gusting 40-60kph, there was no chance I was heading out. There was only a slight breeze last night - again so peaceful. The sounds were carrying though. I ran by a house and there was a huge bang which made me jump. It was someone just getting the newspaper out of their mailbox πŸ˜‚.

I've got no excuses this year with the winter running kit I bought. I spent more than planned, but it's paying dividends! I'll do anything to avoid my treadmill πŸ˜‚

Wow that’s a cold one! Sounds like your gear is well suited and its just a matter of figuring out the right layer combos for the temps. Good for you on getting out! I’ve been down with a head cold so I’m not sure just yet what I’m doing tomorrow for the long run.

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to Decker

Ugh, sorry to hear about the headcold. It can take the fun out of everything although running may help to open and clear the passages. Just take lots of paper towel 🀧.

What an amazing achievement and I'm just mooning over a simple base layer advert saying "not yet, not yet".Hats off to you, but only once you're indoors.

Not sure I'll run in Helsinki when I'm there in January!

πŸ˜‚ I can see it now! That would be a great advert for my arcteryx jacket! Definitely don't need a base layer with it which blows my mind!

🧣🧀 β„β˜ƒοΈI don't know how you have enough layers, but can still move!!!

Well done, I did -4 earlier this year and thought I was a trooper 🀣🀣🀣🀣

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to Jell6

That’s the beauty of my new running kit! It is amazing and I don’t need many layers at all. Last year I would wear 3-4 layers on top and 2 on the bottom. With my new gear, it’s 2 layers on top and 2 on bottom. Such a great investment since this could be my next 5-6 months, with hopefully a few breaks interspersed throughout.
