A wonderful Monday morning to you all - how you doing?

Sometimes we don't feel like writing a whole post, sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the day!

Recent C25K graduate still building up to 5K? Consolidating 5K, or perhaps working towards 10K? Seasoned 10K pro? Wherever you are with your running, this is the place to chat about it!!!

Or even if you just want to post a quick hello - it’s lovely to hear from you all 😊

Anyone in from Brighton & Hove? We've the fabulous Snailspace art trail at the moment; enormous snail sculptures scattered around town for people to find! They certainly slow me down a bit because I can't help stopping to take photographs 😊

What are your favourite landmarks on your runs?

Anyway, have a great week running, everyone!

Hi Abi and other Admins,

Hope all good.

Just back from Surrey with the fringe on top, do not even know what lays behind that.πŸ™ˆπŸ€”πŸ˜‚

Lovely weekend and wedding.Pleased I boringly stayed off the pop.

Trying to chill while preparing to get a run set up.Dragging the chain.

Stuff gets in the way, car insurance , airport parking, gardeningπŸ™ˆπŸ˜‚, and maybe jury duty again.πŸ™ˆ.

Thought I had gotten well clear of that.Might be lucky.12 from 15.πŸ€”

Gone off on one Abi.πŸ™ˆ

Eye on the prize.πŸ‘

Hello roseabi and co, are the snails in B&H like the lions and elephants I’ve seen elsewhere, all decorated by different designers? You must post photos for Oldfloss.

I’m still on IC, but got on the cross trainer this morning just to get some exercise. See the nurse again this afternoon.

roseabiβ€’ in reply toDexy5

They are all decorated by different designers, yes. We had dogs a couple of years ago! They will be auctioned off to raise money for a local hospice. I don't know about the lions and elephants, but I'm sure they're the same sort of thing.

Hope it goes well with the nurse! xx

Awesome 😊

That's a beautiful photo of a shy snail. It was a eautiful autumn day and I'm staying at a hotel for work. Went for an evening run on the grounds but soon realised that it was a golf course! So after 2km of dodging golf balls, I hopped in a side door to the gym and did another 6km on the treadmill. Pity! So this week, maybe 4km of intervals, a 5km and possibly a 9km at the weekend. I'm a bit plan less so I need a goal!

roseabi profile image
roseabiβ€’ in reply to

Any local races you could sign up for? Or even less local... Or parkrun? There are plenty of parkrun-related goals to aim at. Or longer distances to shoot for (half marathon...). Or speedier times - we're running a speed challenge over at the Marathon forum at the moment, still got a couple of weeks of it left 😊

I must find a race. Maybe an Xmas race. I do like increasing my speed but had an interesting chat with my dad. He was a veteran barefoot cross country runner into his 50s. (He’s now 86). He said he never checked his pace or his progress in a race or run. He just ran!

roseabi profile image
roseabiβ€’ in reply to

Enjoyment of running is another excellent goal!

β€’ in reply toroseabi

He was very competitive and won loads of races so I don't know if he ran for enjoyment. He just didn't look behind him or ahead of him. He just ran flat out! I think I'll try running for enjoyment myself though.

Interesting point. Reminds me of forest gump. Maybe sometimes we can have too much tech. I might try that. It's good u can chat

Hi, I'm a recent graduate B&H snail...! They are wonderful, I really liked the police one at the end of the pier. I have been in Spain doing my consolidation runs. I have managed 4...just, at snail pace. I'm planning on hitting the Hove promenade park run I've also been eyeing up the peacehaven run too. I have managed one 5k in about 40 mins , so I think I'm almost park run ready !

roseabiβ€’ in reply toSnuffy_T

They are lovely aren't they!?

You will be fine at Hove Prom - go for it!!

And if you try Peacehaven please tell me all about it!!! 😊

Hi Roseabi and gang.

Love the pic ... We had snow dogs the other year. I graduated start of August. Now just finished wk 2 of Ju-Ju's plan. I need to start trying new routes and going out in the dark more.

Ps did about 12 consolidation runs before starting Ju-Ju's plan.... Is this about right?

roseabi profile image
roseabiβ€’ in reply toDeals1

Loved the Snow Dogs 😍

It's really just a case of getting comfortable with 5k. I'm sure you have prepared yourself very well for the longer distances!

jeffbird profile image
jeffbirdGraduate10

did my first ever 10k run 2weeks ago and it took more out of me than I thought since then I've been doing 5k runs only.

last night's 5k was on a new route and felt great so I think I can start to go longer again.

I've a 10K race booked for 4th November though so need to do at least one other 10K between now and then????

roseabi profile image
roseabiβ€’ in reply tojeffbird

You don't need to do a 10K between now and then, in fact perhaps it would be better not to if it will tire you that much.

I don't know how many runs you're doing per week, but maybe you could try building up your total weekly distances during the remaining 2 and a half weeks?

Perhaps try a 6k this week, then next week 6-7k, and then 7-8k early in the final week - with a 5k run (or two, depending upon how often you currently run) in between each. But be sure to take a couple or three days of rest before the race. The atmosphere of the race should help you get to 10k - just make sure you slow down if you feel it's getting a bit much at any stage.

What do you think?

jeffbird profile image
jeffbirdGraduate10β€’ in reply toroseabi

thanks for taking the time to reply. I do 3 runs a week and had been doing juju's plan to 10K. so after my 10K I ran 4K 2 days later and the remainder of my runs have been 5K. I felt like I could have easily carried on running when I hit the 5K mark last night.

I think your suggestion of building back up again to longer distances is good. I'll try 6K tomorrow and see how that goes. thanks again!

roseabi profile image
roseabiβ€’ in reply tojeffbird

Excellent! How did it go?

jeffbird profile image
jeffbirdGraduate10β€’ in reply toroseabi

Ended up going slightly further (6.7km) as I had to run home to get potatoes on for father-in-law coming for dinner :D

I was aiming to run at 8min/km based on runners world suggestion of a slow pace for me but was 7.30 -7.15 so need to work on going more slowly. Felt good though and still feels good today so happy with that. I'll have to miss parkrun this week so will do another 5K saturday afternoon. Next week I'll go for 7.5 on longer run on a day when I'm not pushed for time :D

thanks for your encouragement.

roseabiβ€’ in reply tojeffbird

Great! Don't worry about the suggested pace too much, it just needs to be a pace that you yourself find easy.

Hi Abi, I’m preparing for the Croydon 10K, which is this Sunday. πŸ˜€I ran the final 3.5K of the route on Tuesday without any problems. πŸ™‚I may decide to run a shortish distance this evening but I’ll see how it goes and what the commute back across London goes later.😫

Other than that I’m a marshal at Parkrun on Saturday which is great fun πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘

I’ve taken today off work so I’m going to look around for my next challenge! πŸ˜€

Hi roseabi and everyone 😊❀️

I feel I had a luck escape after painfully injuring my shoulder climbing last week, so am relieved it only made me miss one run.

I’d been sticking to a 10k and 2 x 5ks a week (one being Parkrun) since graduating Juju’s plan, and trying to build my steprate up using Podrunner podcasts. Having realised that meant I was doing tempo runs for all my 3 weekly runs, I’m now trying to slow down 2 of my runs (but keeping Parkrun as my tempo 5k). Am amazed how comfortable going even a bit slower feels!

I’m starting to veer towards the idea of doing a HM next year, but don’t want to start a fixed training plan yet. Have decided I will, however, investigate upping the distance of my slower 2 runs, and just see how that feels. So did 7k instead of 5 today, and (after my Parkrun 5k on Saturday) will aim for 12k on Monday for next week’s increase. If 12 / 7 / 5k seems comfortable for a while then I may then go up a bit over 2 weeks again... Planning to do another 10k race on Nov 3rd, so that will obviously be a 10k week again.😁

Am still enjoying just being able to experiment and knowing I can run, so don’t feel I need any firmer plans right now. 😊❀️

One thing that continues to amaze and surprise me however is the whole psychology of going for a run. I know I can run 10k with no problems, and if I set off with that intention then it’s fine. If I set off intending to do a shorter 5k, though, my mind decides my legs have had enough far sooner, and are struggling along for the last km! This does not even seem to have any bearing on how fast I run! So mind games seem to have a big impact on my ability to run still! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Sounds to me like you are a long-distance runner in the making!

mountaindreamer profile image
mountaindreamerGraduate10β€’ in reply toroseabi

Thanks roseabi - I hope so. I think HM will probably be as far as I ever want to aim, though. I’ve a fused neck, and was never expected to manage running. HM seems a realistic aim without risking too much impact up my spine. 😊

roseabi profile image
roseabiβ€’ in reply tomountaindreamer

Yep, half marathon is a really good one, a challenge but still doable and fun - realistic as you say 😊

David_G profile image
David_Gβ€’ in reply tomountaindreamer

Hi mountaindreamer, I’m exactly the same. 😳 I’ve no idea why my legs appear to give up if I was planning a shorter run and it doesn’t seem to matter what pace I’m running at. πŸ™„

I can’t set out with no particular goal in mind though. I find I need some kind of target every time I go out. It’s a bit of a puzzle at the moment but I’m sure I’ll sort it out one day. πŸ‘

For the time being, I’m thinking about future organised runs I can aim for, which I can build my own preparation and training around. I’m trying to be careful though that I don’t overload myself with targets.

It’s not something I thought I’d be worrying about when I started C25K in April, so it’s massive progress to have got this far πŸ˜€πŸ‘

Good luck with everything! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ€ž

mountaindreamer profile image
mountaindreamerGraduate10β€’ in reply toDavid_G

Hi David

It’s funny isn’t it! Glad it’s not just me! πŸ˜‚

Like you, I only started C25k in April, so I’m mainly trying to make sure I don’t injure myself while I’m so new to running. I still see every run under my belt as building up my running experience, whatever the length. It is great to have choices though! πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜Š

David_G profile image
David_Gβ€’ in reply tomountaindreamer

You’re right, every run is different and you learn something from each one (at least I try to!)πŸ™‚

Once I’ve done the Croydon 10K on Sunday I might try some more cross country. I really enjoyed the different terrain and the challenges involved when I did my first, 3 weeks ago. πŸ˜€

I may join a running club eventually, but for now I’m happy plodding along doing my own thing at my own pace 😊

If nothing else, I find runs are a great opportunity to clear my mind of everything πŸ‘

mountaindreamer profile image
mountaindreamerGraduate10β€’ in reply toDavid_G

Sounds like you’re doing great! πŸ˜ŠπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈβ€οΈ

I’d love to try cross country / trail running eventually, but think my running muscles need to be stronger first. I ended up with knee issues the only time I ran on an uneven field for speed intervals, so decided I’d stick to smooth surfaces until I’ve done more miles. I’m hoping everything strengthens up so I can take more twisting and turning movements later. I’m a forefoot striker, which tends to make my knees twist around a bit at the moment...
