Chipping away...

Haven't posted for a while as just plodding along doing at least 3 runs per week. Still love reading everyone's posts and progress.

Well as the title says I am chipping away at my short -mid term goal of running 10 min miles and today moved a step closer with a 5k PB. Didn't head out today to do this just wanted a steady 5K with a rest day tomorrow before my 5K race on Sunday.

Had a great run, great music and added bonus of PB. I am having fun with my running both with 5 & 10k and fartlek and intervals work that is really helping with my speed.

Will just keep doing what 'm doing for now, have entered the Leicestershire 10K race end of October and then will look forward to the HM training plan that roseabi has mentioned on the marathon forum. Never thought I would even entertain that idea but we never know where our running will take us.

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend and happy running always. :) :)

Well done! 😃👍🏃‍♀️ Yup, we never knew where C25k would take us. Not to a marathon that’s for sure, but here we are 😃

Thanks misswobble. Very exciting as the options unfold and become real 😀

It is! You won’t believe where you could soon find yourself

I thought i’d Lost my marbles when I was out doing a 10k race on a freezing cold morning. I actually said to myself, “who am I kidding”🤷‍♀️

Then I noticed there were loads of women much older than me chasing around, and I thought well what else would I be doing on a horrible morning. The ironing! 😱. So I ran on, smiling and proper, chuffed to be out there giving it large 😃👍🏃‍♀️💪.

Racing though! Who knew 🤷‍♀️

I can so relate to that. When I am filling out an entry form for a race I think, what are you doing, who do you think you are entering public races...lol..but I get over that and do it anyway. And ironing...oohh no, nothing but contempt for that. :) :)

That’s a fantastic update - well done ❤️.

I’ve got my second 10k on 7th October - can’t imagine doing a HM yet!! 🤯

I’ll be happy with sub 33 min 5k (currently 34.50)

Thanks Mitch. Hey my goal of 30 min 5k or 10 min mile is just that. I'll be happy with a 33 at the moment too. Most of the fun is in the trying and I really enjoy the self-challenge. 😀

That all sounds very worthy and good to me. You’re doing great xxx

Thanks MD, yes having a plan/s keeps me happy and having fun. :)

Glad you're having fun Lorijay. You sure are chipping away at your time. I'm on Runkeeper too and I wonder if it has a friends bit? I could stalk you.... However, if you start talking HM's, I may have to reconsider following you ;)

Hi Paula, good to hear from you. Hey I just said I will try the hm training plan not that I would be successful...lol..

How are you??

in reply to Lorijay

I'm a bit down because I need to rest my foot after my excesses of bare foot running. I went to the physio and he gave me quite a pummelling. A wet Friday night is not the same without a 5km on my way home from work. You report back on those HM's and I'll cheer you on OK?

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply to

Oh sorry to hear about your feet, I didn't realise the barefoot running had caused a problem. Hope it gets better soon. Are you not allowed to run?

in reply to Lorijay

It's a struggle to walk never mind run ! I'll be fine if I just rest it. I did a 4km which set me back to zero. I'm a bit impatient i am

Well done on your PB 5k Lorijay; I’m hoping that my magic plan to 10k will start improving my 5k speed. Good luck with the race on Sunday- bling to follow 🏅🏃‍♀️💥

Thanks Saartjie. Just trying to keep it interesting. How are you after your accidental 9k, must be close to that 10k podium? :) :)

Saartjie profile image
SaartjieGraduate10 in reply to Lorijay

I did another 9k on Weds but it was a struggle. Aiming for 10k this coming week. A short 4k tomorrow (still makes me laugh that I now think that's just a quick run!) Planning on entering a couple of 10k races to keep momentum up but not sure I'll be running 10k every week! X

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply to Saartjie

I know me and my husband laugh when I say only a quick 5k today..lol. I've been trying to do a 10k each week but think this will be difficult to sustain with daylight hours reducing when you're trying to balance that with work. Thinking about joining a running club just to have people to run with over winter during the week.

Yes Saartjie do enter 10k race, I'm looking forward to mine end of October. Are you in the UK :) :)

Saartjie profile image
SaartjieGraduate10 in reply to Lorijay

Yes I am. Planning one in Cheshire in November and next spring Manchester 10k. Where's yours?

Also thinking of joining a club to keep me motivated through the winter but I think our local clubs are a bit hard-core cross country runners!

Hi Lorijay, Good to hear you full of plans and running well! I have been away and feel completely behind with my forum friends' progress and my running. All the best with your 5k race and your 10k race preparation.

Thank you 61. Lovely to hear from you. Have you been on holiday? I'm sure it won't take you long to get back to where you were. Have you started running again? :) :)

Thank you Lorijay. My husband and I were in California!! My brother and his wife have lived there for 33 years and this was the first time we have ever visited him. We had the added incentive that my brother's daughter was getting married. We stayed with my brother for 6 days, attended our niece's lovely outdoor wedding and then had an 11 day road trip around California. Lots of new sights and experiences to enjoy. I had never been to the US before and neither had I been on a long haul flight. Yes running has begun😊. Progressing gently, so far one run of 15 mins and one of 18 mins. I plan to add 3 or4 mins per run (Mon, Wed and Fri) in order to return to 30 minutes. Then one long and two 30 mins runs per week. I plan to add hills and farklek/ interval type things too. I really hope to feel ready to take part in another Parkrun mid October just before my (yikes!) 62nd birthday. Happy running to you! I read your reply to Mummycav and having fun seems an excellent thing to do while increasing fitness and for you decreasing asthma troubles. Well done you!

That’s brilliant Lorijay ...I’m interested to know what pattern you use when fitting in fartleks & intervals? Do you do them as part of your 3 runs a week? So if you’re aiming for a 3k run do you do it in intervals?? Sorry if I sound thick!! x

Lorijay profile image
LorijayGraduate10 in reply to Mummycav

Hey that's not a "thick" question and I am no expert Bev. Yes I do them as part of my x2 5K runs, don't try to speed up with the 10K..lol..

So I might do 2k steady, comfortable pace and then either do some fartleks, just informal fun. I'll pick a bush or whatever in the distance and when I get to it I run really hard till I'm all but breathless then recovery 1-2mins (sometimes longer) then do it again. With intervals I don't go so hard I just increase the pace for a distance of my choice on the day, depends how my breathing is (asthma). This is just my own adaption Bev but I can say it is working. All my times are coming down and my breathing capacity has increased to the point that I haven't used my inhaler during runs for about 2 weeks even when sprinting.

Main thing for me is I have fun doing it. :) :)
