I’ve finally got to run whilst on holiday in Switzerland and oh my what a view!
It was a tentative run due to my hip niggle, which is still there but massively improved. We’ve been doing lots of hiking so not really rested, but I still wanted to get a run in 🏃♀️
I took it nice and steady, but was really out of puff...I wondered if it was anything to do with being at altitude (only 1090 meters so not that high). But when I turned round to run back, I realised I had been pretty much been running uphill all the way!! It’s funny how even a slight hill can make you work so much harder!
The hip feels okay now but I’ll give it a couple of days rest before I run again, but fingers crossed it’s only a minor hiccup.🤞
Once I’m home I plan to incorporate strength training a couple of days a week, and also some yoga. I think I need to also take a step back a little in my ambitions, and remember that I’ve only been running for 4 months!! So, still carry on with the 10k plan, but I may double the time by repeating each week. I’m in no hurry after all.
My biggest fear is being forced into not being able to run because I’ve overdone it. I’d just feel terrible if I was the cause of an injury 😩
Happy running everyone!

I think the thing about running in mountain areas than we often forget is the unremitting nature of the climbs. Most hilly areas in UK you go up, get to the top, and then run down, but in places like Switzerland you can do a whole 10Km without any flat or down at all.
Best wishes for a safe return, home, and to your running program. 👣👣👣👣👣👣👣
I love that “I’m in no hurry after all”. That’s exactly how I feel! I’m waiting for cooler weather to start (it’s almost here) and for my health / energy levels to pick up, then like you, I’ll be in no hurry but 10k will be my goal too.
Pls post again with another photo if you do another run before heading back home.
When I realised it is only 4 months I’ve been running, I thought, wow, that’s actually no time at all. I’m doing this for my own achievement, I’ve not entered into a race or event, so may as well just take my time! Next run will probably be in France en route homeward, views may not be quite so spectacular!
Oh what a fantastic view little-runner and well done for running on holiday. Yes just take your time on the plan to ensure you enjoy your runs . Enjoy the rest of your hols! 🏃♀️🏔🇨🇭
Oh wow thats just stunning!!!! Yes hill climbing is tough, I had similar on my recent holiday and I have been going easy since. I have also recently started yoga and its amazing. Its really helped my tin man body and running niggles..... well done too!!
Gorgeous isn’t it? 🏔since I’ve started running I’ve been amazed at the difference between walking and running up the slightest of inclines is an absolute killer!!! Because I’ve been doing a lot of hiking I thought my run was pretty flat, it was actually over 200m in elevation gain so no wonder I found it tough! Good to hear Yoga works for you, confirms that I know it’s something I need to do!
Great stuff Little runner and a well thought view about running wisely. If it’s painful it’s not joyful!! You’ve got the right balance!! Well done you!! Lovely photo!! Lucky lady! 😍😁
Hello Little-runner, Wow! What a wonderful view!!! Well done you incorporating running into your holiday. We are just back from the west coast of the USA where I didn't run at all. Currently experiencing jet lag so am typing as sleep doesn't seem possible at the moment! I noticed in one of your replies that you are in the Derby area. Makeaton Park is my nearest Parkrun, is that the one you took part in? If so, perhaps we'll be able to meet there one day. It does sound as you have more of the running bug than I do, but I am definitely keen to continue. I do hope you hip settles down so your running can settle up! All the best for your onward running journey.
Hey 61! 👋 I try to run whenever I’m away so I can form a long lasting habit, although it’s about 25 degrees at the moment so would like it to cool down somewhat before I lace up the trainers. Yes I’m in Derby and Markeaton is just down the road from me. The Parkrun I did was in Nottingham with a friend, and we’re going to try there Beeston one too as that’s really flat. Have you done Markeaton? It would certainly be great to meet up with a fellow C25ker for a run! What a great idea! 👍. Yes I definitely have the running bug, and the hip niggle has forced me to have a rethink and slow things down a bit, but thankfully I’ve taken a step back before it got serious.
Hi Little-runner, Yes I have done one Parkrun and it was Markeaton. The last post I wrote was all about it as I was really taken with the whole experience! My plan is to gradually build up my running and then take part in the Markeaton one on Saturday 13th October, which will be just before my 62nd birthday!!!! Improving on my previous time would be a lovely birthday present! I really had not expected the time I achieved at all. The other runners had a big effect on me! I must confess that running in the rain is not currently my idea of fun, so I shall, most likely, only take part if it is dry. It would be lovely to meet you there!
Hey! Read your post on the Parkrun - they’re such great events aren’t they? I was totally elated for days after I did mine. If I’m around on the 13th I’ll do my best to meet you there! And what a great way to celebrate your birthday!! I think running in the rain is wonderful by the way...it’s very cooling. Obvs torrential rain may be another story altogether! Hope to see you on the 13th! x
Thank you for your reply. I am leaving 13th October as my plan. I'll confirm nearer the time. If we manage to meet, you will be the first C25k-er that have met😊. Do hope that your running is going well.
It's my plan now too and the date is on the calendar...although I'm on the IC at the moment resting the niggly hip. The pain caused me to cut a run short the other day.😩 Fingers crossed I'll be back running in a week or so. And you will also be the first C25k-er too that I will meet! 😄
Yes it’s still causing me bother, but now we’re back home I’m properly resting it. (As opposed to out hiking every day as we were doing on holiday). Not sure what’s wrong, I’m giving it a week and if it’s still not right I’m going to see a physio....it’s just so frustrating as I just want to be out running!! 😩
Out of Switzerland now sadly, in France but it’s too hot to run at the moment! Hoping it will be cool enough for me to run this evening as I’m itching to get out there!
After my boyfriend told me to get out and run in the sun, I got out there and ran around the village near the campsite and only went and got a PB on my 5k!!!! Felt a bit nervous running in another country and in unfamiliar territory, but chuffed that I did it 😁
