Is anyone thinking of going on to HM distance? I’m not sure. I’ve done a few 10k runs and am thinking about the next step. I just wonder whether, with cooler weather coming in a couple of months, it’d be a good time to move on? Has anyone any experience of this? Anyone fancy joining me? Maybe the Great North Run next September (β€˜19) could be an option. Hmmmm.... I remember someone on here saying, when I’d done my first 10k and was adamant I’d leave it there, that they’d give me a few weeks πŸ˜‚ ... πŸƒπŸΎβ€β™€οΈ

I'm toying with the idea of longer distances. I think the stumbling block for me is time. I started out knowing I could find half an hour 3 times a week without too much difficulty. I'm now usually giving up 1.5 hrs 2 to 3 times a week for 10k plus warm up/down and a tiny bit of cardio after. To push on to 20k+ we're looking at 2hrs...

I'm partially drawn to the longer runs as my other half's sister does ultras... and makes them look like a walk in the park.

I think for now though I'm going to work on small increments to the 10k... I did 7 mile Sunday which went really well. I'm eyeing up a 14km route which I think I can do in a fast time to give me confidence for longer distance but overall I think for really long distance I want to increase my speed a little first and try differing terrains for the 10, all the while strengthening and improving form etc.

I'll be interested to see how you get on though if you decide to head down that path πŸ‘πŸ˜

Thank you for your reply. I’m thinking of this being Avery long term plan. Not following a 12 week thing. I’ve also branched out yo a few trails recently and have become less bothered about my time and PBs and more concerned with enjoying the runs. I like weaving in and out on a trail, it’s fun. Time is an issue isn’t it?! Another reason to stretch it out over a longer time rather than cramming it in to a few weeks. Have you joined the marathon forum? I just put my first post on there but feel completely out of my depth! I wish I had a running friend to go out with at times! πŸƒπŸΎβ€β™€οΈπŸ‘ŒπŸ½

Not looked at the marathon forum... I think I have a mental hurdle even with the word "marathon" 🀣

My massage therapist is also a runner so I get to chat to her about these things. Not sure I'd want a running buddy but I think they are probably more necessary on the longer hauls for motivation.

I don't think I'm fussed about the PBs themselves its more down to time again, if I can run faster, I can cover more distance in the same time slot (which is usually after work but before dinner!)

Who knows... this time next year we could all be so much further on! πŸ‘πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

I understand that about the word marathon! At the moment I find 10k long enough - I mainly get bored. Yes, who knows what the future holds? I’ll be holding out for cooler weather for the moment though πŸ‘ŒπŸ½

I have one booked in October. But have run that distance solo. It is the sort of distance that you can do while out for a bag of chips. I think lordi on here did it a few weeks after 10k, I'm not sure he got the chips but I recall he was just out for a jog. I went out for a 10k but found it a nice evening so jogged on so to speak 😊

I partially blame you for planting the seed in my head πŸ˜‚ I need strength in my back for sure. It’ll be nice to run in the cooler weather so maybe it could be a potential next step πŸ€”

Yeah cooler weather would be nice or just go out in the morning or evening. I have 22k to do tomorrow so need to be up early, it's been thundery here so may be a soggy one and I plan to do 90% of it on trail to try my new trail shoes :). I'm sure you'll do it soon if you want to, I did 12 and then 15k, did a few 10k races and then after a couple of months dithering just got on with it one evening as I felt it needed doing. It is hard though on the body so do take lots of photo stops and breathers my run time for that first one was 2:17 but elapsed time was more like 2h:34 as i had to keep stopping to look at the map and take photos etc which worked out well as it controlled my pace as much as the long grass and cross country terrain did.

Hmmm interesting was thinking about a HM next year....just a thought at this point...πŸ€” Have increased to 12k and slowly building on that so surely HM is doable next year? Was only going for 5k....then 10K...now HM!! 😡

He he it’d be nice to keep in touch then, The great north run isn’t til September so I’ve got a year πŸ˜‚ I fancy the London landmarks but it’s fully booked already. My back hurts though when I get to 8k ish so definitely need to work on strength. Roll on cooler weather for sure πŸ‘ŒπŸ½

On the assumption I get over my current wobble, defo count me in. I'm already signed up for a HM in March next year. It'd be great to have someone to chat to about the whole thing as we do it together. And I can't think of two nicer people than you and Alka Ripcurlrana71 to do it with.

Let me just get this sodding ITB thing off the agenda....

Ah yes that’d be nice! I might go slower through the training than you though. At least your ailment has good timing: during a heatwave. Once you’re up and running again, the temperature might be kinder to us πŸ‘ŒπŸ½

Have you made it so no one can follow you? Option not there πŸ€”

Don't think i turned anything on/off. Not sure how I'd do that. Or why. But I'll check....

Hi Tasha,

If you want to run a HM, do it.πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

I think you could be missing an opportunity for JuJu’s three challenges on Strava, 10K, distance and HM during August and starting on the 1st.πŸ€”

Wish I could take part, but hedges beckon and snails pace.Although there is no cut off time, one thing is a given for me, I would not make it anyway.πŸ€”πŸ™ˆπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Go you.πŸ’₯πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ’₯and anyone else considering it also.πŸ‘

Thank you ju-ju-. I guess I can’t do it at leisure - no time limits. I need more core strength for sure πŸ‘ŒπŸ½
