Midweek trail

Usually stick to the same run on pavements during the week and saving exploring for the weekend. I’d been reading some of your posts about trail running last night so about 1k into my run this morning I decided to head off onto a footpath over the fields that I’d never tried before.

It reminded me that the brain needs something to occupy it. Often these days I’m glancing at my watch to check pace and counting off the KMs. But if you head out somewhere new, and especially if it’s an overgrown path with nettles etc. there’s so much else going on you can’t think about how fast you’re going.

Stopped and turned back earlier than I’d have liked but only have time for 30mins in the morning. Took a farmers track to the main road, I suspect not a right of way given the level of barbed wire on the gate so will avoid that section in future.

Might try the same route on Thursday and try to go a bit further (cutting out the run around the perimeter of the field I did as I missed the footpath sign).

True. Oddly enough soaking wet shoes, covered in seeds and bits of grass, and bright red legs with nettle stings are all quite satisfying. And it’s worth it to be out at 6am with nobody about, heading into the unknown.

Will wear my trail shoes next time though. The road shoes are giving me accusing looks given the state they’re now in 😀

This is exactly what i was saying to MikeJones68 in response to a comment on my recent post. If you run for improvement and are focused on your watch, you miss what's going on around you. i dont even take music with me.

Your run looks massive!

This is how I accidentally did a 10k the other week, exploring new paths, venturing off the beaten track. Before I knew it I was 6k in and still a fair way from where I needed to be :)

fun isn't it :)

Only 5.5k but felt further 😀. There’s definitely a 10K plus route out that way.

It's amazing how far the run looks when you switch to satellite view

Yes once you add in houses and fields etc it starts to look a long way doesn’t it. Not sure if you’ve tried relive but that’s a great way to view your runs if you use Strava. Does a video marking out your route and showing any photos you took on the way.
