I tried to run 5 km this morning. I had to stop after 2 minutes as I had excruciating pain in my calf. I’ve been to the Physio, done my stretches and rested for 4 days. But obviously I need more time on the IC. I’m devastated. How do others cope with the IC?
I feel like crying 😢 : I tried to run 5 km... - Bridge to 10K
I feel like crying 😢
😢😢😢😢 xx
Argh it’s so frustrating Paula, I’ve been there. I think it’s really important to rest up. Maybe light low impact cross training if you’re able without having any pain but it’s not something you can rush. Take care.
You're dead right Jenny. i can't rush it and I so want to. I'll view this as a learning opportunity - in core strengthening and particularly in patience ! Thanks.
Resting is important Paula. Ice it ( bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel) and elevate your leg.
No running for a week, keep up the physio and gentle walking. Maybe go swimming..
Being on IC is not nice, I have used the Stepping Stones podcast as my first run after an illness break. It makes you pace yourself.
Hope you feel better soon. Keep checking in on the forum to get your running fix😊xx
Thanks Bluebird. I'll be alright and I'll take Sadie's advice and stay close to the forum while offering support to others. I think my running pride is injured too....
Oh, no, poor you. I haven't had an injury yet and am thankful. Keep us posted about hoe you get on x
You are a lucky Flicker !
Well yes, especially as I have the residue of appalling injuries in my youth (fractured femur, knee split to the bone, pieces of glass coming out of my leg weeks later, 47 stitches, with resulting weakness plus a scoliosis).i really expected some trouble, but running has actually strengthened my bad leg. I do know how lucky I am!
Oh gosh, I’m so sorry..l. I have been there and I totally empathise, it’s horrible. I’m very lucky to have found a superb osteopath. My best advice is to religiously do what they tell you ( ie what exercises your physio has prescribed) and then continue with the exercises when it’s better ( unless they say not to! ) . Hang in there and it won’t be long before you are running again.
Thanks juju. I know most runners probably get injured. And I’ll get through it as I have before. It doesn’t even upset my planning for my 8km and 10km. I just wanted to keep up with the group and compare experiences every week.
Hi paulanoo, I am so very sorry to hear that you are having to divert to the ic. Here are some flowers for you 🌸🌼🌺, not a great consolation. Let's hope that absence makes the heart grow fonder. You mentioned the you plan do do everything the physio has recommended, so let's hope all is well again soon.
You are as kind as ever 61 Thank you for the beautiful flowers xx 😘
So sorry Paulanoo, keep resting and hope to see you back soon. I know it’s so frustrating not being able to get out there. More get well flowers for you 🌻🌼🌸
😕 So sorry to hear this, Paula. I cope miserably on the IC, to be honest. But I try to keep my spirits up with swimming and core strengthening - all helps with running for when you get back to it.
Do rest up - I had a mild calf strain a few months back, and these can take a bit of time to fully heal (as a result I had a few false starts to getting back to running, after). 4 days off running doesn’t sound an awful lot if you have a calf strain - better to rest for longer than risk making it worse (resulting in longer spell on the IC).
Chin up! You will run again - and these little injuries, they happen to the best of us.
Sadie xxx
Thanks Sadie. My challenge will be to get back on track and i know I will. I have to be sensible with my exercises and rest. I don’t want to lose the support here though.
A good way to test before trying to run again is to gently hop on the affected leg - if any pain do not run! And keep posting on here, if only to support others. That will keep you invested in the community while you cannot run. I stayed close to the forum throughout my two injuries! x
Good idea. I’ll do both of those things!
A very experienced running friend of mine told me about the hopping thing! Makes real sense with a calf injury, as sometimes, as it heals, you don't feel much pain whilst walking about, so you think you are okay to run - but then on impact of running it hurts again (which means you are not fully healed). A little hop will tell you whether it is fully healed, without the misery of trying to run before ready. Take care – and honestly, don't despair. I came back from a calf injury; you will too, trust me. xxx
How annoying. I may be joining you. We could sit in the couch and sip tea!
Hi Baddy, What happened? I've had lots of niggles and even injuries. Since I've started doing regular stretching and strengthening and rolling and even Pilates, I'm doing OK. I think it's par for the course when we're running longer distances. I do have tight calves so do lots of calf raises at the end of the stairs, holding onto the banister.
Possible plantar fasciitis or strain of foot muscles. I looked up stretches and have been standing with my toes on the steps and going down with my heels. I’m having a proper fight with myself about going to Park Run tomorrow with a seriously good runner friend. I think I shouldn’t, but maybe I’ll wake up miraculously ok? It’s got to heal one day, why not overnight? I think it’s a lie in for me tomorrow. If it’s pouring with rain I won’t mind quite so much!
Check out peroneal tendonitis. That's the tendon just under the ankle and goes under the foot too i think. It's my weak point and it is actually always a little irritated/sore. I ice it and I do weird stretches and I also roll with a tennis ball under the foot. The solution for me is to build up my core. I think it might be an idea to stay in bed - I have lots of experience of running on injuries. Sometimes it's OK and sometimes it aint.
Hmmm I think I've got an exterior of foot and an interior of foot problem. Exterior problem could be explained by perineal tendon. Bother. Will have to find a knowledgeable physio. Last time I saw an NHS one they were only allowed to look at the bit that was mentioned on the referral bit of paper and refused to believe that that bit was attached to the rest of me 😂
You should try to find a sports injury specialist if you can. In my experience, the garden variety are not useful. How are your lower outer calves ? Balance exercises are good too.
Calves are fine. While we're sitting here how do you like your tea?
Hey baddie. I’m off out for a hilly run. I’m fine 🙂 you take it easy though. I’ll call in on the way back so put a tea cosy on 😉
I’ve been on the IC recently Hidden & it’s pants....but you need patience & you will be better before you know it...don’t be tempted to get back too soon, this spells danger x
