Week 4/4K run and first On Cloudflyer outing

Hello running fiends,

So, took my new loves out for a 4K spin this morning. Perfect running weather - 15 degrees and a cool breeze.

The Cloudflyers? Wow! I love them. A very different running experience to my ASICS, I must say, but for the better. So light, so comfy (especially with the good old racers’ loop, which secured my heel in nicely). Hard to explain, but I feel more connected to the surface I am running on. They feel perfectly cushioned, but are very flexible. All in all, fab. 👌

I had a nice run, completing the 4K at a reasonable pace. I have a sports massage booked for 12:30. My “You are halfway through B210k” treat. Hope it’s not too ouchy.

Well done Sadie - enjoy your treat. I’ll do some research into your trainers. Last couple of runs my heels have been hurting after, so interested if they offer more cushioning than my ASICS GT2000’s

Go visit a pair in a running shop and have a chat with an assistant. They are not heavily cushioned shoes in the traditional way; much of the cushioning comes from the "pods" on the sole. (There is a school of thought that says too much cushioning actually causes injuries…but heck, who knows). I just wanted a shoe that gave me a lighter, more natural feeling run, and these certainly do that! The Cloudflyer is the model that offers the most stability.

Morning Sadie, what a lovely run, and so glad you're enjoying your clouds. I am getting tempted myself, but my budget won't stretch to the ones I want... yet!

Runners Need have just reduced the price a lot of the On range! Mine have gone down by £30! x

Which ones did you go for, Slinky? (Did you try them first? Please tell me you tried them in store!) They claim to be good for any gait (it says on the website that they can even correct over or under pronation!) x

UPDATE: I just called Runners Need, after seeing the £36 reduction on the shoes I had just bought, and they refunded me the difference! They have a 7 day policy that states if the shoes you have bought are reduced within 7 days of buying they give you the difference! Great, eh? So THANK YOU Slinky, for alerting me to this! x

Sounds wonderful. I too am tempted by your gushing review of these shoes but as an over-pronator (or so they said) I'm not sure they would be suitable. Well done on hitting your half way mark - what a difference a month makes eh?

Have a little read up on them on the On site. They make some claims, I must say! I mildly pronate on one foot; these shoes claim to correct that over time!

And yes, cannot quite believe I am halfway through. Much bigger runs to come though, still not feeling quite ready, but you have to be in it to win it, eh?! x

Ah, so it was the Cloudflyrers, not the Clouds. i have both, but on balance I prefer the Cloudflyers, I think I will always run in On shoes now and am looking at the trail shoes for when the Asics wear out, possibly, though the Asics have a rock plate and the Ons dont.

Anyway, I'm so pleased you love them.

Yes, I opted for the Flyers as they offer slightly more stability. I also tried Cloudflow, which felt heavenly – i might go for them next. Amazing to run in, I love the flexibility.

And thank you so much. It has been tough, but then again so was C25K so I am not giving up! xxx

I bought the Clouds because Up and Running didn't have the Cloudflow (they had only just come out at the time) and as both pairs of On shoes I possess are different sizes to each other, and larger than my everyday shoes, I didn't want to take the risk of ordering online.

Honestly, Sadie, i think of you as being a much more accomplished runner than I am, and more experienced, so i have absolutely no doubt in your ability to crack this.Do you think your long stints being unable to run due to injury are taking away your confidence? - it would be entirely understandable. I bet you have some Virgo in you too, and they are always self doubting because of wanting to do things meticulously.

The Clouds look lovely too. I want to try them all now. Heck, I want to go work for them! In Switzerland, of course.

I have been running a wee bit longer than you, I suppose, but I see you as more accomplished! You run for longer, and over hills for goodness sake! I have developed an almost pathelogical fear of injury, probably from having a fair few niggles early on in my career.

And you are right, I want to do it right, and I want to do it well. And guess what? I am Virgo with Virgo rising – double whammy! Can you even imagine how awful it is to be me?! LOL!

I can imagine how scary it must be having been off with injury. i worry too because of my age and having had a fractured femur - I remember reading someone's post when i was first doing c25k, and she had fractured her femur slipping on a matchstick in the park!!! So now i worry from time to time that I'm going to have a fall and go gaga, as I'm an old duck.

I was married to a Virgo/Virgo rising (my daughter's dad): he used to hang his socks up at night. He was an architect and meticulous. When I first went to art college in the 70s, he sharpened all my pencils for me and provided me with little blocks of fine sand paper so that i could hone the points: my first life drawing session, they handed out huge chunks of charcoal ... I was sunk!

Mind you, I have a friend who is Libra/Libra rising - trust me, that's worse, she can never make a decision. As for me, I fully understand the Virgo bit, having sun and Mars in the 6th.

Right, enough digression; back to running! xxx

Oh sounds wonderful. Well done on the halfway mark too! 10K in sight! Whatever happens, that won't be taken away from you. I keep noting that some people hit 8K and feel from there that 10 is in reach, I am not sure either that I will feel so ready at that stage but there's still 4 weeks to go for you and much like C25K you don't *have* to be ready for the final 10K until the end.

Regarding your lovely shoes - what a lovely feeling you describe - being connected to the surface you are running on! Sounds very good. Grounded.

Thanks ickle dear. I don’t think I will be one of *those* people, who leap gracefully from 8k to 10k! I may even take longer than most, as I have a couple of weekends away in July where running for so long will be tricky. But you know, I am in no hurry. 😁 xxx
