I have just returned from a very interesting & at last promising Dr's appointment...i saw a different Dr today & having looked at my notes from the last couple of years or so...it is his professional that i am...& have been suffering from debilitating seasonal allergies/hayfever...which is why i feel much worse immediately after a run as alot more pollen/allergens get taken in whilst running!!!although i am still feeling utterly rubbish at least it seems like a logical explanation!!!every Autumn(moulds in the leaves & trees)& every spring(pollen)like clockwork!!!so now i need to find some antihistimines that work & attempt to gey some fitness back!!!
I am really struggling at the moment after over a month of no running i feel as though i will be starting from scratch 😕 but i need to get it back 😊
Good news that you seem to have a diagnosis and an understanding of contributing factors.
As a way of trying to solve my hayfever issues, three years ago I cut out diary. So turned to soya milk etc. Since then I no longer suffer hayfever. I am not saying this the answer for everyone, but it certainly helped me.
Oh wow really?i had no idea they were at all connected!!!its weird because ot had me fooled...i have had an achy throat for ages...a bad chest & i never would have associated them with allergies!!!
Going vegan stopped my arthritic pain in my hands, and all my finger joints are straightening out. Never underestimate what consuming food meant for baby cows does to,our bodies. Regarding my hands, the consultant I saw for my frozen thumb said there is a correlation between dairy and arthriltis, so also, I would think, between dairy and mucus production.

I have heard about the dairy/mucus thing...its amazing what works!!!
Same here- awful hayfever from the age of 7, gave up dairy 6 years ago, no hayfever. I thought it was just me, so v interested to hear Millsie-J had similar experience.
This is very interesting...it sounds very worthwhile investigating 😊
This is good news, Claire. It may be a pain to be affected by pollen allergens, but at least you now have a diagnosis. As for the running, my gut feeling is that you arent as far behind as you fear. You have made up for lost time before and you will do it again. It may be annoying and demoralising to have to do it, but you will get there.
Interestingly, I have a friend who has sinus problems, has been on very heavy antihistamines on and off for years, sometimes cant taste food, but she has been able to stay active both in the gym and with paddling.she is a keen canoeist and has had expeditions to Scotland and Wales in difficult terrain, so it is possible to find ways to live with the problem
Hang in there, you will be back in your running shoes before you know it xxx.

Thanks lovely...i dont mind putting up with it...i am just not sure how to get back up to where i was before running wise...judt before i stopped i managed 7k...now i can barely run 3.5!!!😣

You just need a bit of time. 3.5k is good. Remember when we all found running for five minutes a struggle. You did it before, so you can do it again. I finished my run this morning through the church yard and up Diston’s Lane. The lane has a slope to it, and I remembered when I had struggled up it behind a group of women with pushchairs. I was embarrassed about them seeing me (the days when i gave a monkeys what people thought) but soon realised I was going so slowly that I was never going to overtake them anyway. That was only last December or January! You are nowhere near as far behind as that. Honestly, you are determined, as you have shown in the past when held back by illness. You will crack this xxx

Just go and fondle some unicorn lycra to get you in the mood 😊😊😍😍🦄🦄🦄
I picked up a second hand treadmill for a very reasonable price - often people are desperate to sell if they are no longer using something that takes up so much space. May be worth a look.
Right, that's a problem. It was a problem for me too. Was a major effort transporting it and getting it set up but I am so glad we took the plunge. I have only run outdoors three times this year because of a hip problem, but have still managed to run every other day because we got the treadmill. The antihistamine route is probably easier though Good uck and hope you are feeling much better very soon
Some GPs will prescribe gym membership. Its usually for weight loss but you could ask.....
• in reply to
Yes...i was once prescribed gym membership...but its not very helpful as they still charged full price every month or per visit...you just got the £20 per year joining fee paid!!!😩
• in reply to
Ahhh, perhaps you have to be on benefits to get the whole amount....should’ve thought of that! Sorry 😐

No worries 😊 unfortunately i think i am a little bit doomed because unless i sit inside my house all day with all the doors & windows shut its everywhere.i have to make changes where i can...even things like not hanging your washing outside...especially bedding...so not fair...i love getting into fresh sheets when they have dried outside 😕 you can buy hayfever masks to run in...but i will look like the biggest weirdo ever!!!
Hi Claire, me too on the allergies, it took me a while to figure it out, but for me it seems birch and oak which abound where I began running, and something in the autumn bring it in ( not grass yet, touch wood) and mild spores :-(( . Different pollens have different season and I have now adapted where I run accordingly ( not through birch woods in March/April!) Running just after it has rained is good, someone recommended beconase nasal spray, and there is something called HayMax ( a sophisticated version of putting Vaseline on your nose) which comes in a cute little pot and may help.
And don’t despair, time off just lets you regenerate a bit!
Oh its awful...i am really struggling...i never realised that hayfever/allergies could make you feel this ill!!!i feel like i am stuck in a vicious circle of feeling too ill to run & not wanting to run out i the pollen infested outdoors!!!i have some beconase...i need to be better with my inhaler as this is affecting my asthma which is not normally a problem...just keeping my fingers crossed that it sorts itself out soon as i am so.sick of it now 😔
Fingers crossed! And they are seasonal ( tho I do feel as if I add a new one every year!). And don’t stress about the distances, it’ll come back. Last weekI ran 7 k twice, this week 3.5 k is killing me, but I think your body has its own rhythms and you’ll do it again when you’re ready. For me the only rule is don’t give up!!
