Twangy toes

Ok very hard to describe, but I have been experiencing some toe issues while walking but not running. This started a couple of weeks ago and seems to come and go.

Basically I walked round to the local corner shop for some milk and the middle toes on my left foot started to feel really twangy, like the tendon was spasming in and I didn't want to stretch the toes straight.. it wasn't pain as such but was uncomfortable enough that I had to walk after a bit with the toes on that foot scrunched up tight. At the time I put it down to the shoes I was wearing as they were a fashion boot from Next, so not the best quality from a podiatry/sole point of view.

I have since had the same experience with those shoes but never quite as bad, but after a week or so I have now experienced similar with other shoes which makes me think it's not the shoes but just walking after running. I had this experience yesterday mildly taking a family ramble 4-5 miles, but it only lasted a few minutes and I walked through it.. (I hadn't run for 4 days so should have recovered)

Anybody had anything similar? I guess it's tendon related or nerve damage??

Do you think it could be because theses shoes don’t have as much room as your running shoes perhaps? I now walk much quicker than before I became a runner so not sure if it something to do with that?

No, i'm an 8.75 I reckon, so nearly all my shoes have a bit of extra room as I wear a 9. My running shoes have started to rub the very ends of my toes(small blister) after 10k so possibly I could wear a 9.5 in these, but they don't feel too small in most runs.

I have always suffered from what I may call shin splints but not sure that is correct(basically tenderness on the inside of the calf of left leg 2 inches above ankle bone) I have generally always had this from running, it is sore to the touch(after runs) but not sore otherwise(ie feels like bruising and only aware of it if I press on it) but it never effects my running or anything else. It may be related though. Gonna try another gait analysis session today I think at up and running and see what they think.

I think I have probably answered my own question in that maybe I need bigger shoes to cope with expansion on the longer runs as maybe it's making me pull back the smaller toes or irritating them such that they play up later when not running. Will see how some new shoes feel.. been coveting some cloudflyers for a while.

Yes i think you are right. I go up 1.5 sizes as i like to be able to wiggle my toes, even when they are warm.

As we tie on running shoes the extra room isnt a problem with regard slipping. I dont tighten up much along the foot, just around the ankle.

Hope you get it sorted.

Could also be a type of cramp? My toes sometimes cramp up for a few seconds but it never lasts long.

Hi pinkaardvark !

Try northcoastfootcare.com.

Have just typed in twangy toes and came upon this site. There is a paragraph that seems to marry with your symptoms .

Anyway hope this helps.😀😀
