The cons of hi-vis clothing during a horrible run

Poor old @rolysmate stuck indoors trotting. There seems to be a lot of illness about. Look on the bright side, it can always be worse...

Today I actually did a running poo. Not a runny poo, a running poo. Half a mile from home. Absolutely horrible experience. How Paula Radcliffe and other elite athletes cope with toilet troubles while the world looks on I do not know.

Tried disappearing in the woods but bright pink clothes brought an "Are you ok?" from a passing cyclist. Arrived home distraught and messy. I now own one less pair of underwear.

I think my days of early morning pre-evacuation runs are over and I am looking for camouflage clothes.

My next run will be short, close to home, wearing my oldest underwear, carrying tissues, wet wipes and a dog poo bag and probably under cover of darkness. I am very nervous and hope this was a one-off.

Don't worry, I will not be adding a photo to this post!

Oh my goodness, how distressing. I can imagine your worry for your next run. Was it something you ate or ???? Hope you recover (physically and mentally) soon.

Crumbs, Im glad that hasnt happened to me (yet...) But it does seem to be the one subject that crops up in every book on running, and runners seem very prosaic about it. Hopefully it was a one off.

I have to admit, that wasn't the first word that came into my mind at the time!!!!! Distress, trauma, tears, horror, embarrssment....

I can only imagine Langley-Loper , I was also going to say that you had a really s****y run, but didn't. I did have an incident like that many years ago - not running, but can emphasise.

Ooppps! Hope you are ok!

I seem to recall misswobble posted once about the virtues of hi vis wear! The dog poo bag is a very excellent idea though!

Oh no??!! How awful for you, that must’ve been horrendous...??? But, it hasn’t put you off, you’re already planning for your future runs so good for you for not being put off...💪🏻

Yep, I sympathise. This was my 'GI issue' run the other week. I have had to hop over into a field previously and it's not much fun either - as you say, hi-vis is not exactly camo - plus my moon-white bum reflects all available light like a mirror.

I will not run now unless 'regular daily health' has occurred, as my old Biology teacher used to refer to it. Although it had on my disaster run. I think I was dehydrated, which doesn't help.

I hope it never happens to you again. It's horrid.

I always, always go before going out... simply cannot imagine how horrid it must have been...poor you!..

Maybe pocket size collapsible screening could be useful...hmmmm!

Or.... we could all carry one of these... to hide under:)

Hopefully it will not happen again xx

Oh, forgot one more very important point.

THANK GOD Michael Johnson wasn't with me. I really would have died of embarrassment.

Love the camo poncho! I think I need the "woodland" fabric.

Like you wise runners, I always try to go before I go. However, to minimise impact on the rest of the family, I have been doing my long run on a Sunday morning at 8am which coincides with dropping son off at DofE volunteering. 8am did not allow for full evacuation this week. Boy have I learnt my lesson.

Back to late morning, afternoon or evening running for me. This is the main thing that has put me off doing a park run. No hiding from all those hundreds of runners if you get caught short.

I can smile about it now and I will run again...with all appropriate preparations.

PS do incontinence running pants exist? Need good seals round the leg holes. Watch out for me on Dragons' Den although maybe a bit of a niche market!

Poor Langley-Loper. I can only imagine (but would prefer not to if you don’t mind)

I have sort of trained myself to poo at will because of my fear of a Radcliffe moment. Early on I had a couple of near misses and it’s hard to run with clenched buttocks!

If you are prone to this problem it is probably worth carrying a clean up kit. I think some people take Imodium before a race.

I hope your next run is more enjoyable 💩

I find coffee has the desired effect about half an hour after consumption (must be the caffeine) but I don't drink that first thing in the morning on a near-empty stomach due to migraines. Oh it's all so complicated!

I usually have tissues stuffed up my sleeve in case of a runny nose but didn't even have them on Sunday.

Oh no.... this is my worst nightmare!! It's brought me out in a sweat, just thinking about it, I really feel for you :(

But YOU are an elite athlete, you've been through what they have and survived. I realise that's not quite the badge of honour you might have hoped for when you took up running.... but you've got a good sense of humour about it, and that's the best way to get over it.

Thank God I was only half a mile from home. Hubby was surprised to see me back ahead of schedule, then concerned when I called from the bathroom for the wet wipes please!

After a brief near mental breakdown, my running life is ended, etc., I put on clean undies and went back out and did the last 2 miles I needed to stay on plan. Either dedicated or mad.

Bloody hell!! You went back out.... I'm in awe. That just shows your strength of character. You won't let this beat you. We all would have had a (very justifiable) meltdown but I doubt many of us would have gone back out straight away and finished off the run! Dedicated and definitely not mad! :)

Oh no, how awful for you! The trots while trotting. Definitely need a sort of camouflage teepee type thing.

I'm thinking of setting up a few permanent shelters at regular intervals in the woods just in case. I could sub-let to the local cubs and scouts as the base for camp-building badge type activities on non-running days to off-set the investment. All will be stocked with baby wipes, tissues, dog poo bags and disposable gloves. And remember - always take your rubbish home!
