I’ve signed up for my first race on the 23rd. It’s an 8km road run.

I’m still on the C10K app and on week 11 which is 17 minute runs x 3 so I thought, why not see how I get on. Also, it’s really hard to run outside here as it gets so hot and there’s only tarmac to run on. I just stay indoors on the treadmill usually so I’m a little worried about being outside! I’m just going to take it really easy hopefully I won’t get too carried away and run too fast at the start and end up having to stop. Wish me luck!

It sounds horrid where you are? Too hot and only tarmac on the ground. Not a great combo.

But you have already done 10k so 8k should be a breeze if you can cope with the temps. But I guess the only way you can train for that is by going outside?

The weather is really nice today but it can change very quickly. I went outside this morning and ran a 5k in a new PB so I’m hoping this augurs well for the 8k!

What time does the race start? Hopefully it kicks off early. I don't know where you are so don't know what sort of temps you're talking about but I struggle when it gets over 18C :D When I have run in the warm (and especially if I'm running in temps of 25C and over) I put a buff on my wrist which I soak in water - this is very refreshing to wipe my face with; and I have also run in a wet shirt :D :D although depending on what tech you have this might be tricky. In very warm conditions I also go out with wet hair. Do you know if there will be water? If not, do you need to take your own?

I hope it goes well - let us know!

That’s some great advice Annie but I’m not sure what a buff is. The race starts at 8.00 am so it shouldn’t be too hot. I reckon it’ll be about 20-22 degrees. There are water stations too along the route so hopefully I’ll be ok. I like the idea of wet shirt and hair! That I am going to do just before the start I think. BTW the race is in sunny Bahrain.

Oh, sorry - a buff is a short seamless tube of material. This is the original buff.eu/gb/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAz... but there are many and cheaper varieties. Very useful - it can be a scarf, a hanky, a hat, a bag, a bandage... I'm sure there are other uses as well.

Good that it's a fairly early start and there's water. I look forward to hearing all about it!

Well I never! Learn some thing new everyday! Thanks. I’ll no doubt be telling the good folks on here my stories of the run. Let’s hope it’s a good one no matter what.
