Yesterday was a tense time sat in a hospital seat for 5 hours waiting for MrRfc to have a procedure. They are not the most comfortable of seats and we have had a few sleepless nights recently.
This morning I decided I had to get my body moving and I wanted a run. I had decided that I wasn't going to push it as I was tired but I needed the me time.
Off I went out, it was sunny but cold,. A few mins into the run it turned dark and wintery By the time I got to the park there wasn't that many people around so I decided to try something I've been wanting to do for ages.
If you watch football you will see before subs come on they run up and down on the sideline. They often run sideways and sometimes I see people in the park doing this, so today while It was quiet I gave it a go. Things i noted from this are
1) it makes you feel like a kid
2) it stretches the muscles on the inside of the thighs
3) you can still keep a certain speed up
Every now and then I changed sides. I didn't do it for too long as I could tell it was a new exercise for my muscles and as we know new exercises need to be treated with caution until the body adapts.
When if I finished doing that I skipped. I haven't tried skipping (this is run skipping rather than rope skipping) for years and it was such hard work. My heart rate jumped up so fast and I couldn't keep it up for long. I was quite shocked at how much effort goes into skipping. It really stretches the quads, in my mind better than squats.
The upshot was it brought a massive childlike smile to my face, relieved my tension and worked new muscles. I think I might keep it in occasionally. The footballers must do it for a reason and they have professional trainers.

Haha! Good for you - sounds like fun and now I want to try a bit of sideways running. I also have a (very underused!) skipping rope which I bought to improve my fitness levels ages ago. You are right - it is a great workout! Oh, and I hope MrRfc is ok?
He's fine thank you. Normally I would of gone for a walk there is a lovely park next door but mrRfc had had no fluids for 2 hours before as per arranged and there was a two hour wait when we got to the hospital He asked me to stay as we were both a bit worried what with his kidneys would do with 4 hours no fluids. I think there had been an emergency along the line. So couldn't be helped.
Skipping is hard! And super hard with a rope! It's amazing how different it feels in an adult body. But so fun. Perhaps I'll throw some in my next run.

Good for you! Sounds like you got some much needed endorphins flowing. Hope Mr Rfc is OK - hospital waiting can be painful. I havery been known to skip from time to time. Haven't tried the sideways running though. Not entirely sure I am coordinated enough to even consider trying that!
He's doing fine thank you. On the sideways I made sure I knew the surface that I was running didn't have potholes otherwise when you not looking where you are going it could be difficult.
I bet it was good to get out and stretch your legs a bit. It must be a worrying time for you both
I skip in the house - without a rope ! I do the boxer's type skipping. you just do the arms as if you are holding a rope. I do it as part of my warm up before going out for my warm up walk
I copied a footballer stretch when I seized up after the half marathon. I got a right pain in my groin and I remembered seeing footballers stretch their legs up and sideways as if lifting their legs over the back of a chair. It worked!
We both doing fine thanks. The thing i found with skipping is as I raised my leg while I skipped my quads felt so tight which made it feel so much harder. Started on my stregnth and flex work today so that might help. I've seen that stretch they do. I might read up and have a go too.
I do a warm up routine in the hall before my run and it involves high knees (walking on the spot) You can do those quite slowly, hip swings ditto, skipping, arm swings, skaters and then jumping jacks. I do each 30 times and then repeat the whole sequence before going out for the warm up. I daren't stop doing it now as I'm sure it does me good. I do a cool down walk but then do some stretches when I get home while I still have music playing in my ears. It's easier to do them to music I find. I did strength and flex out and about, using the park railings etc. It's good!
That sounds great. I am beginning to realise that if I don't act now injury will follow. My muscles are far too tight. As with everything slow and steady I will start to change my ways.
It sounds like your skipping was a lot of fun! Your run sounds cold, but very different too!
Glad all seems well with MrRFC too... Plus.. numb b** syndrome whilst waiting in a hospital is horrid !
The whole run exercise obviously, was just what you needed... my Nan always said, laughter was the best medicine, although sometimes it is not that easy to take
We skip sometimes in warm up at circuits (and always do the sidestep one you mentioned) and I've noticed that us girls always seem to skip better than the boys! Boys look funny and ungainly when they skip
This reminds me of a skipping race we did in PE way way back when I was in infant school. The teacher told us to skip to the end of the playground, and one boy said, "but we don't have skipping ropes". She told him just to pretend, so while the rest of us dutifully skipped in the way you described, he left us for dust running down the playground circling his arms round pretending he had a rope that he was skipping with!
Glad you had a good endorphin raising workout and that all seems to be going OK with Mr RFC.
