"interval training" can mean many things to many people -- here is the famous Jack Daniels take on it - rundynamics2.webs.com/DRFin... -- he emphasises the correct pace and the correct duration for them. bear in mind that his training is mostly aimed at competitive athletes.

Yes - re pace. But he also says that the running intervals at that pace should be longer than 2 minutes as this is how long it takes to get your "system" up to Vo2Max. Benefits to VO2 max start after around 2 minutes.
