Magic 10 Interval training.

I'm on week 3 of the Magic 10 (Time based) Tuesdays I do a benchmark 30 minutes to see if I'm improving in pace / distance covered (I am, slightly) Thursdays I have not really decided how to do a short run and have been half heartedly messing around, this morning I did week one of C25K but ran the walking bits and sprinted as hard as I could the running bits. I've tried this before but If I'm honest it wasn't a determined effort but today I really went for it and probably ran faster than I ever have before. Feel a bit sore now actually but in a good way! Saturday is my longer run and it's 44 minutes this week so we shall see how I cope. Last weeks 39 minutes was very slow at the end but I managed it and felt fantastic afterwards. My new Garmin continues to insult me and tell me I'm a lot older than I am, It's also telling me I'm only maintaining my fitness not improving which can't be right as every run tells me my Aerobic exercise has increased my fitness level. Still researching and fiddling with heart rate zones but if nothing else it's motivating me to teach the *&%#&@ thing a lesson!

Happy running everyone :-)

Tim

Good idea to use c25k wk1r1 to run intervals . Running slower on the longer runs is the right thing to do it will make sure you'll get to the end of your run. Good luck 😊👍

You bought a smart watch. It’s too smart and designed to be on an Olympic athlete. 😂 I have a basic Garmin and have it completely dumbed down. All I want is pace and distance. Nothing else really matters.

Well done on your training. I have just entered a 10K race on the 26th of April. I have not ran 10K since November other than a parkrun double on New Years Day. Need to start getting back up to 10K now myself.

Your interval training sound good. I'd ignore your garmin reading for a bit, it's like standing on the scales every day to see if you've lost weight - doesn't work like that. I'm sure if you looked at these readings in a month you'd see the change. I set my max HR really high for my age on the basis that garmin said I was running higher than my max - which you cant do. A max is a max!

That's a good point, I ran at 102% of my max this morning and had already adjusted it up a couple of days ago when I was whinging about it's ageist tendencies :-)

I'm not that bothered about it but if it's set up wrong then I'd like to set it right.

I set a new personal best for fastest ever 1 KM this morning, Take that rude Garmin! :-)

Great news on your new Pb. I ran with an Hr or close to 200 at one stage, regularly hit 180 at tough sections so garmin estimates of what your hr should be for your age are wrong. Enjoy your runs.

Wow, that seems high! My highest ever this morning was 173

Yep I have a high max. Drove car down a9 tonight with hr of 145. Resting hr 63 and dips down to 56 or so. Run with hr chest strap so know fairly accurate reading. Doc says just be happy I can push myself this far 🤣🤣 choosing to believe her

So your max must be at least 173. Most likely higher.

I’ve managed to push mine to 183. Well above my age estimate.

Yep, every time I go above 100% I go into the settings and increase my max heart rate.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the fitness age of garmin, mine started out pretty good but the more i do and the longer i run the older it tells me my fitness is, i’m hoping over time to reverse it slightly though and am sure you will too

Well the rude Garmin seems to be spurring you on, so it’s not all a loss! 🤣 My Garmin doesn’t know the difference between walks & runs and in the end I decided only to use it for actual runs. That seems to have settled it down a bit. Though it never thinks I’m actually making much effort. I ignore that bit, as it doesn’t spur me on at all! You’re doing really well - good for you. 👏🏼🎉👏🏼

I'm probably just being a bit pedantic, I know my fitness has improved in leaps and bounds in the last 4 months and is still improving. I see that in the numbers every single week. I've decided the Garmin thing is down to my weight and as that continues to fall my Garmin will start getting more accurate.

Well done Rigpig. I’m a week behind you, just did week 2 of the 30-20-10’s yesterday. It feels good to run fast doesn’t it?! I’m glad your Garmin is motivating you, even if it is only to *&%#&@.
