anything wrong with YASMIN pills?my GP suggested a new contraceptive pill‎ but i am not so sure about it..

I have been with the new GP at nearby practice, and finally managed to get an appointment 2 days before my current pill runs out. I have been on ethinylest/ drospirenon (30MCG/3MG) contraceptive pills for more than 5 years, (the one that i am having is YASMIN). my body seems to respond no problems to ward this medication.

and when i asked my new GP to proscribe me the same pills, he suggested another one ethinylestradiol/ Levonorgestrel (30 MCG/ 150 MCG), as he described, the previous one had 'bad press', and therefore he suggested me the new one, and he went on and prescribed me the new one against my will even after i said how about let me stick with the old one for now and he can give me the name of the one that he's suggesting and i can go home google it before i make my decision. i wasn't happy about it as he wasn't able to explain to me that what is the 'BAD PRESS' was about, and just went on to prescribe me something that i wasn't ready to try. As it is difficult to make another appointment within 1 week (always full), and running out of the pills, i don't know if i should go on as he suggest. i wish i could ask him more about it but the GP told me that everyone have 10 minutes ( yes i understand that), and my time is up. and i felt the pressure that he is rushing to kick me out despite the fact while still having doubts & concerns.

anyone who can help me to explain the difference between the two types contraceptive pills?? or if any ideas about the 'bad press' against the ethinylest/drospirenon type that he is referring to?

Hi there

Roughly 2 years ago there was a report that Yazmin may slightly increase the risk of venous thrombo embolisim/blood clot (VTE) which might be one reason the GP didn't prescribe it. This pill is also slightly more expensive which may also be another reason the GP didn’t want to prescribe it.

I would suggest going to your local contraceptive clinic, as they may be able to give you the generic form of this pill that you may be happy with it. You can find your local clinic here: fpa.org.uk/find-a-clinic

I hope this helps

Best wishes

Katherine
