the whole subject of how much Vit D3 to take is rather controversial but most would say your levels are fine but I take 1000iu and my serum D is and has been for years around 130, but I eat a lot of oily fish so that probably is the reason. I have taken but D for about 25 years and since being diagnosed at 72 two years ago after cancer treatment my rheumatologist was fine with that - I also o take calcium 250mg supplement as I get most of my calcium from diet so the 259mg just tops it up in case some days I’m low - of course I also take K2 MK7 to help protect me from arterial issues from the calcium.
It’s all controversial because there isn’t a lot of good large high level studies on nutrients and food but I think the basic rule is use diet where ever possible !
Hi SimMartin.
Thanks for your reply . i dont know why Dr doesnt adviced me to take K2 MK7 to protect the arterial issues .I read a lot about this and its useful .my appointment with Dr on 14th i will ask her about this.
I hope for you a healthy life with happiness.
have a good day .
You need to have your bloods checked before you start on extra Vitamin D as you can overdose on Vitamin D and your levels are different by age and ailment. Vitamin D3 is totally different but discuss levels with your medic.
Thank you for your reply.
Agreed. I have some kidney issues. My rheumatologist advices me to cut back on calcium (supplements) and vitamin D as there is too much in my blood system to filter out through my kidneys. My endocrinologist who I see for osteoporosis says to increase Vit D and make sure I get lots of dairy. Fortunately I only see both of these doctors once a year and after my annual visits next month they have agreed to discuss what they think is right for me. We’ll see.. The lesson here is there is no one answer that is correct. Do your own research, speak confidently with your doctor about your issues and concerns and do your best to stay informed so you can ask the right questions. By the way, both my doctors were unfamiliar with Vit K 2 Mk 7 and the likes- it’s very confusing. Although functional medicine doctors are now very popular they are generally not covered by insurance. They order different blood work that regular MDs do not order and look at the BIG picture into our health and our records. Didn’t mean to go off on a tangent- just take all the info from health care professionals, do your homework and make the best decisions for you. Good luck.
I am on TheicalD3 one a day and I asked about taking extra vit D and was told I didn't need it / shouldn't take more than I was already. The active substances are calcium and colecalciferol. Each chewable tablet contains 2,500mg of calcium carbonate (equivalent to 1,000 mg of calcium) and 8.8 mg of colecalciferol concentrate (powder form) (equivalent to 22 micrograms of colecalciferol = 880 IU of vitamin D3).
your Vitamin D level is not the same as Vitamin D3 which has different effects. Also we need your full Vitamin D result, after the number there should be a measurement detail to show how the drug was measured. Age and health problems also vary the results and so the normal level varies.
85 is a good level so 400iu as a maintenance is ok
There is an excellent recent discussion of this entitled Ideal D3 levels which you will find if you search here.
In the UK drs are conservative on D3 but in France some recommend taking levels higher in osteoporosis.
We should all try to get children and grandchildren to have good levels.
