Zoledrolic acid

It is now 6 weeks since I had the first Zoledrolic acid infusion and I am still struggling with constipation.I am finding it hard to find any other cases of this. Constipation is on the list of side effects for Zoledrolic acid.

I do have ibs but it was calm before the infusion.

I would like to know if anyone has had the issue of constipation after the infusion?

Thanks

I get constipation with codeine and have found eating figs, either dried or fresh, manages to control it. As a child my mother would give me syrup of figs in spring and autumn to 'clean me out'!! Times have changed. 😂

Thank you for the advice

forgive brevity but try drinking natural kefir - increases gut bacteria and helps enormously

Yes I have been told probiotics help. Have you had the infusion?

Hi Calmlake. I had my first. prolia injection on 21 October, and have had terrible constipation since. I know yours is Zoledronic Acid, but both of these have constipation on their side effect list. Like you, I have problems with my gut anyway. But., OMG, this constipation has been so severe and for so long.

the doctor has given me Movicol. It has worked, but when I stopped it because I went almost the other way, then the constipation came back. So now I’ve taken it again.

in 2010, the G.I. specialist suspected I had intermittent partial bowel obstruction due to . So I really can’t afford to be constipated. Figs do help. Prunes do the trick, but are acidic, which is no good for GERD (which I have). I have bought a papaya to try, as it’s alkaline, but in the UK you buy them hard and have to wait for them to ripen (I am waiting)….

I manage with fibogel but may try some laxido too. It is really awful. It happened when I took the alendrolic acid tablets too but I stopped them. I had the infusion because it was supposed to bypass the stomach. It will resolve though.

I haven’t tried fiber gel. I’m wondering whether I should. Have you tried Movicol?

I think Movicol is the same as laxido ingredient wise. The fibogel bulks it ip and the laxido softens it i think.

have a look on chatGPT (free app). I’m not into lots of apps, but this one is really good. Very detailed.

When taking the Movicol try upping your fluids. I’ve had a problem with the bowel for years and had different medications prescribed by the consultant at the hospital.

Movicol was the first ever given by the hospital. It has taken me years to figure it out!!

You have to play around you will get the dose that works for you.

Obviously there are times ( different circumstances, Change in diet etc and of course fractures) when things can get bad and then you are able to take up to eight sachets not a pleasant thing to have to do because all you seem to do is take the Movicol and drink fluids. ( This gets things moving and then you can adjust to what works best for you)

The good thing about Movicol is it is safe use. x

Hi I also was on the alendronic acid tablets and noticed that my stomach was really bloated. I have a redundant intestine and have had problems with my bowel for years. I take a laxative every day or I would be in agony. The alendronic acid did seem to make ot worse so I have stopped the medication. I take dulcolax liquid or sodium picosulfate liquid and it does help. If I miss a day or two the constipation is horrendous. Hope this helps as it did for me

Thank you for your reply. My ibs was calm before the infusion and it has been a very difficult time.

The tablets caused constipation and bloating so I stopped them. The infusion was supposed to bypass the stomach.

Hi, I can fully sympathise with you, keeping the bowels going regularly is a real issue for some people.I have a long standing problem with the bowel, and Chronic Constipation is awful to deal with.

Perhaps it may be possible initially the infusion has caused the constipation and then the anxiety has taken over ( it happens to the best of us)

It is so important for you to get the bowel moving because it is obvious it is causing you much anxiety and I know from my own experiences anxiety and stress cause constipation to persist.

Over the years there are several things that are really important, drinking plenty of fluids I find is top of the list and also keeping the body warm.

Green Tea in a morning with breakfast is really helpful.

Having IBS is not easy to live with but my main issue is the constipation so although Broccoli does bloat and give wind it does help to get things moving, Kiwis are a natural laxative and canned tomatoes help as do parsnips.

These things have helped me but obviously we are all different.

Teriparatide2024 has mentioned Movicol and I have replied to her post maybe you can read it.

Perhaps you could ask your doctor to prescribe it to try.It is something you need to take daily for it to keep things working.

Please don’t let it put you off future infusions because when fractures come along the gut and bowel suffer terribly and problems increase with each fracture.

I’m sure the issue will resolve itself and you will be soon feeling much better just knowing it has x

Thank you for your kind reply. That is all very helpful and I appreciate it very much. Yes i have been very stressed. I am seeing a gastro consultant shortly and will discuss it all then.

Can you get Dulcoease Hydrate solution? Its a gentler way of doing things rather than a full on laxative. Just take in morning and then a glass of water. To get you over til things hopefully ease for you. I have had the infusion and did notice my digestion slowing but i had other issues with it. Hopefully things will settle for you.

Thanks for that. I will look into it. Is your digestion any better now?

Its ok but i keep on top of it. Unfortunately i got a lot of longterm bone and muscle pain from the infusion so was using much more painkillers which dont help!! Someday there'll be medications without side effects!! Wouldnt that be nice! Hope you improve soon, maybe a case of trying to keep on top of it with whatever you need until it eases out along the way.
