Osteopenia

In 2022, following my first appt with an Endo since having my thyroid removed in 1981 as new GP surgery after moving house decided to lower my levo + was so ill. They wouldn't raise my levo until I saw Endo for her to agree, which she did. Was in Levo only. She ordered a Deca scan, there was no follow up+no comment from GP surgery so I thought all ok. Found Thyroid UK as having issues with GP+a year ago saw private Endo who informed me Dexa results (-1.3 neck of femur, -1.9 lumbar spine) meant I had osteopenia. From another forum user heard of Bone balance which I started about 2 months ago. I take D3/K2 mouth spray, magnesium, selenium, zinc, but C, vit B complex. I'm also gluten free. I have a new Endo appt at the end of the month as presently in T4/T3 combo. I walk every day - minimum 6k steps/1 hour. Longer walks can be at least 2 hours. I run up and down stairs as a 75 yr old female! Any advice re improve my bone status would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Hi Lottyplum. When I decided to find out more about exercising for osteoporosis, I came across Margaret Martin's website and YouTube videos so these may be useful to you too. She guides you on what muscle strengthening to do and, at least as importantly, what not to do. Here's a link to her website and I hope it helps; melioguide.com/

Hi Lottyplum

Boron is another recommended supplement to add. I’ve been taking it for years.

Have you had a blood test to see where your calcium levels are at? You may need to supplement with that too. My gp does a “Bone Profile “ blood test which includes calcium.

With selenium supplements , it’s possible for it to build up to overly high levels in your blood, so recommend you get this checked if you’ve been taking them for a year or more. This happened to me.

Thanks for that info. I try to keep well away from my GP surgery as they seem illiterate where thyroid issues are concerned🙁 I see a private Endo and pay for my own blood tests as I truly don’t trust any of the local GPs ! Regarding Boron, how much is recommended?

Boron supplements 3mg once a day. I get mine from amazon, brand Health Leads have no nasty additives.

Maybe you could ask your endo to request a calcium blood test for you? Endos cover bone health as well as thyroid and diabetes.

there have been studies both here and the US that show eating 4-6 dried prunes a day improves bones. cambridge.org/core/journals...

Apparently the main benefit of the dried plums is their boron content - so probably should be careful if you are already taking a Boron supplement!
