Prolia injections

I am new to this site. Had Prolia injection last Monday. Now I am experiencing upper leg pains around thigh and right groin mainly. Wondered if this could be a side effect so checked on this site. Already regretting it after reading posts. I had a hip replacement 10 weeks ago (my bone scan showed osteoporosis in my back but wrist and hip was fine) and thought now I am feeling great again I would have the injection with much encouragement from 2 different doctors and didn't research it first, was even told no side effects (there is never such a thing). Silly me. THR was for car accident about 36 years ago which had caught up with me. I don't think they are related. I wonder if it was too soon after surgery as back to pain walking and was doing absolutely fine. I am an Aussie and 72 years old.

I know the way hip replacement is managed is to get patient ambulatory as soon as possible. It may not have been a great idea to have a med like Prolia so soon (ever, I'd say ;) ) after the surgery, I would check with whoever is responsible for your after care. What if it's an infection and nothing to do with the Prolia, or with over exertion?

Do let us know how you get on. Take care.

I am pleased to say it is now 6 weeks since my hip replacement and so pleased I had it done. The pain from the Prolia injection has gone completely now but I will definitely not be having a second one in March. I had a weird headache too for about 2 - 3 months just above my right eye every single day. I luckily do not get many headaches so this was unusual for me. It stopped suddenly - don't know if it was the Prolia but suspect it was. The new aches and pains that started about 3 or 4 days after the Prolia were really bad which is why I put my first post to the site after researching it. I am lucky, they have stopped too and I am feeling good now. So, no way will I be agreeing to Prolia personally after reading all the possible side effects and experiencing a few myself. I have started on Vitamin K and eat a fairly balanced healthy diet. I am careful bending but love walking now and without pain. Hopefully this will be sufficient to keep me healthy.

Glad you're doing better and the various pains have gone. But I'm a bit confused. In your original post, four months ago, you said you'd had a hip replacement ten weeks earlier, but in this reply you say it's six weeks since the hip replacement. Did you have a second replacement, or am I misunderstanding something?

Hello Obejoyful

Sorry to hear you have had problems with Prolia - I had Prolia for 5 years going from osteoporosis to the pre osteoporosis range at the end of the 5 years. You will find a number of people on this site who have had very bad side effects from this strong medication, I hope this isn't going to be the your case and like me you just had a reaction for a few days after the first injection. I had mild problems with the first two injections, was advised to greatly increase the amount of water I drank a few days before the injection and for ten days after, plus in general to maintain a higher level of water in-take. I have not seen this as general advice, but it seemed sensible enough and it worked for me! (I had pains in all limbs for 10-14 days after the first injection and 7 days after the second).

If you find the problems continues I understand from others on this site that you can stop after just the one injection (6 months cover). However there is a high risk of sudden bone density loss and massive spinal/hip fractures if you stop having had two or more injections, there is the need to cover this by having an alterative medication at the end of the 6 month period (so it is important to discuss this with your doctor and have an alterative plan lined up before the 6 month dead-line).

Are you able to go back to the doctor to discuss your concerns if you 'get no where or are fobbed off' you have time to get a second opinion before deciding what to do in 6 months time. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your reply. It is most encouraging and hopefully we have only read the worst cases. It was shocking to read what some poor people have been suffering.

I am an optimist by nature and plan to take on board immediately your advice about drinking lots of water. If the pains go away soon then I know I am one of the lucky ones.

So glad you replied and again many thanks for your post

Hi, I had my first and last injection in February this year, I have to be honest with you and say that I had the side effects you mention and they continued throughout.

The bone treatments have not suited me and I have been on many of them over the last 14years.

My experience with Prolia has been a bad one.

Please take a look at my posts, like others on health unlocked they are not there to scare people off these treatments, but to share our experiences.

Some people do tolerate these treatments and do well on them but unfortunately we do not hear of many on this forum.

I hope what posy white has replied with is of help to you, although she has failed to mention that she was fracture free before starting treatment with Prolia and on stopping Prolia she suffered 8 spinal fractures.

We are not told the side effects by our doctors, and when we ask they are always played down.

I wish you well and please let us know how you get on.

Thank you for your informative post even if a bit depressing. Will not take anything else into my body without researching thoroughly first from now on. I just hope it doesn't mess with the benefits I received from recent hip surgery. At least with a daily medication it is easy to stop. Wonder why it is 6 months. Looks like they lock you in where there is no way out. I hope to give a positive response before too long. Here's hoping.

I drink gallons of water all the time. My husband marvels at how much I drink per day. It may help but it didn't help me. The drug attached itself to my already compromised immune system (no I should never have been given the drug). All I can say is that is the biggest regret of my life. I truly hope that your problems resolve quickly. They may. If you were healthy before the shot, you will probably come out o.k. I had two conraindications that were unavailable knowledge to my doctor, 1) a compromised immune system already, and 2) I had had bowel surgery. Both are listed now as contraindications on the Prolia sheets put out by Amgen, the manufacturer. Unfortunately for me, they were listed on page 13 of a 30 page document and my doctor, nor myself did not know. And, I did not research either. Big mistake that I will never do again. No shots or pills until I know as much as I can about what Big Pharma is putting into my body. I am 71 and the last 2 years since the shot have been sheer hell. Again, I hope your side effects pass quickly, but I would research every bone additive that the doctors suggest to you. Take care.

I am so sorry you have had problems with Prolia. I have been reading a lot on this poison now and wish it is something I had done prior to having the injection. I read the trial they had but then it was put out by the Pharma Company so we cannot trust that they kept stuff behind. I wish you luck and hope you improve a bit soon. Thanks for your reply.
