I am a 66 year old female, who was diagnosed with osteoporosis in October 2023 following a DEXA scan. I sustained an intra-articular radial fracture of my wrist in September2023, followed by a re-fracture of the same wrist and a new fracture of the radial head in December 2023. I am not on any medications, and with the help and support of my GP, I have decided ( after a lot of research), to go down the non-medical route, until I have a repeat DEXA scan in three years time. I am weight training on alternate days, followed by 5 to 10 km runs on the days I don’t lift weights ( I am a middle distance runner) I’ve run for years. I have enough dietary calcium, so I am taking D3, K2, and Magnesium supplements. My GP did a full blood profile all levels came back within normal parameters. This is very early days for me, and I remain inspired, and supported by the many people who post on this site.

Welcome Goodwalkerme! It sounds like you have a sensible and supportive GP who is not pushing you into taking the ghastly medications on offer. Like you I have resisted going down that route! So far so good for me although I refuse more DEXAs as I have scoliosis so they cannot be accurate. Good luck!
Hello and welcome!
I, too, am 66 ( it still shocks me! 😂) and was diagnosed a good few years ago now … I was devastated …and I have also resisted any drugs so far.
I fell and fractured my pelvis and, thankfully, did a lot of research and decided that, for now at least, the drugs are not for me.
I know you said you had a full blood profile done but, please, check that your parathyroid levels (NOTHING TO DO WITH THE THYROID) are okay.
My GP knew nothing about the link ( they can’t know everything, I know) and was very surprised when I asked her to check. It showed that I had hyperparathyroidism and needed a small operation ( my first ~ and hopefully last! one ever).
The surgeon said that no amount of drugs for osteoporosis would have worked whilst this problem existed and he frowned upon the drugs.
You may have looked into this already but, if you haven’t, I would strongly recommend that you do, just to check. Hopefully, your levels are absolutely fine, but good to rule it out.
Good luck with everything,
Fran 😉
Hi Fran,
Thank you for your reply.
I had parathyroid levels done as part of a full blood profile, they came back within normal limits.
Great to hear that you are doing ok at the moment, I appreciate you replying to me.
I wish you well
Judi 🤗.
You are absolutely correct Fran! An astute GP in my practice noticed that there was calcium in my bloods and referred me. I too had hyperparathyroidism diagnosed followed by surgery. It wasn’t until after that I realised just how much it had impacted on my health. I was told that the NHS should test for the condition after every osteoporosis diagnosis but I have never heard of it happening which is shocking as it isn’t that uncommon.
That’s a good GP.
I can’t say I had any symptoms or signs at all.
I’m glad it’s all sorted for you now.
Fran 😉
