my Mum had a scan for possible fracture, had a scheduled dose of prolia, then at endo appointment, endo said she has a compression fracture.
every day i find i have another question about this wretched drug,
i probably should've called endo before the shot,
but his instructions weren't specific.
do bones heal while on prolia?
and that dose would've been the perfect time to trial a half-dose of prolia (with an interval of 4 or 5 months),
so it's not so harsh on the body and there is a shorter period of time that you re locked into treatment so you can start something else. that's just an idea of mine.
so you can't just stop prolia,
and is the continuation going to help Mum's vertebra to heal?
evidently her vertebrae aren't in great shape,
but if she went on to forteo next, how does the forteo prevent the bone loss that follows ceasing prolia?
i should've gotten a clue then, that the prolia isn't working,
didn't know what to do, or what to ask endo.
so is this going to make things worse ..? 😔

I’m not sure about Prolia specifically, but after a major fracture and spinal fusion, I had to go on Xgeva for a while. After 2 years I decided to look at the pharmaceutical company’s own website to see what the long term side effects would be of staying on it, vs coming off of it.
The drug’s own website page said the longer you’re on it, the higher your risk of fracture would be. And you could also have a leg fracture develop. But going off of it could also be detrimental. So in other words, I didn’t see either one being a great option.
I’m now off of it completely and doing everything I can to strengthen my bones, including weight bearing exercise, Vitamin K, etc. I wish I had an answer for the bone drug dilemma, but for me personally, I just didn’t see staying on it being wise long term. I hope you get some good input here!
I started off on Terraparatide. I had that for two years then I was put onto Denosumab. I had a gap of a couple of weeks between Terraparatide and Denosumab. I had four more fractures because of it. My Consultant has now said it’s got to be continuous with no breaks between. I’ve now taken Denosumab for another four or five years with no more fractures so I’m happy. I’ve got a Cousin that’s been on it for a lot longer than I have and since being on it she’s got no more fractures either. Before I took mine I had seven spinal fractures, a fracture of my hand and a fracture in my foot. So I can see the good in this medication.
I was sent home from hospital and rested at home but it was very difficult to cope and still is. I’m very independent though. I don’t think the pain ever goes. If I sit in my chair all day I’ve got no pain. The minute I start to do things it’s hurting again.
