I have osteoporosis and I took Fosamax for a while and then lost 6 teeth! I stopped taking it a while ago, but my back is giving me grief now. I am taking calcium and Vitamin D, but I need to find out whether there are any alternatives to alendronic acid.

If you go to the Royal Osteoporosis Society website you can find a list of all the medications available. Maybe join and get a lot of useful information from them.

Hi. The alternative route didn't work for me, so I'm now on weekly risedronate, which is also a bisphosphonate. Maybe see if that works better for you than AA?

From the info I've gleaned and collated from many sources on the internet that I consider to be more evidence based, an alternative way for people who don't have really bad scores/can't take AA, is a "clean, pro bone" diet, which is generally good for health anyway, along with load bearing exercise (and obviously stop bad health behaviours such as smoking). Also includes vitamin K2 supplement which helps calcium be used by the body. Sometimes a magnesium supplement is needed. I've seen people write about collagen supplementation but I can't find conclusive evidence for that and I haven't tried it as it's expensive, although I include more gelatin in my food. There is some evidence for a LIV machine but the latter is very expensive.

However, I'm still taking vit K2 supplement with my treatment, along with Vit D, clean diet, exercise, plus I will be getting a LIV machine when I can afford it, as am hoping to stop taking the tablets after 5 years. I've also started doing face massages where you tap all around your face - it's only light tapping and is intended more to make your skin glow but as percussion helps rebuild bones, I'm doing this on the off chance it might also help those bones while improving my complexion.😀

Can I just ask why you lost 6 teeth, was it coz of AA? I refused all that re side effects, only on AdcalD3, but now have infection/ abscess in molar, on a/bs but hard to get home visit, as crippled. Worried about losing me teeth re osteonecrosis or is that just from meds?? 🤔 Me teeth were one of the few bits of me that were still working! Hoping just a one off. 🤞

You are exactly right, it was alendronic acid! And that can cause osteonecrosis. That can be found when looking up the medication online.

Have you had hyperparathyroidism ruled out as a cause of your osteoporosis? You could add magnesium, boron and vitamin k to your supplements but take care with vit k if you are on blood thinners
